ANTHONY SCORES 35, KNICKS BEAT LAKERS 110-103
By Brian Mahoney | January 26, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) Carmelo Anthony followed his 62-point game with 35 more, and the New York Knicks beat the Los Angeles Lakers 110-103 on Sunday.

Anthony finished with two points fewer than he had at halftime of his record-setting night Friday, but he scored six straight New York points down the stretch after the Lakers had cut the Knicks' lead to two with just over 5 minutes left.

And he had plenty of help as the Knicks won their second straight following a five-game losing streak.

Raymond Felton scored 20 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. had 18 and J.R. Smith 16 for the Knicks. Tyson Chandler had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Jodie Meeks scored 24 points for the Lakers, but he was shut out in the fourth quarter after scoring 16 in the third. Pau Gasol had 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Lakers dropped their fourth straight to finish 2-5 on their Grammy Awards road trip.

Anthony's 62 points were a career high, most at in the NBA this season and most at the current Madison Square Garden, one more than Kobe Bryant scored five years ago. Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni, who coached Anthony in New York, said the key for the Lakers was to contain everyone else, knowing Anthony would score.

They didn't.

Bryant is still unable to play as he recovers from a broken left knee. He said he called to congratulate Anthony after Friday's game, and though he stressed his appreciation for MSG, said having the building record wasn't particularly important to him.

He also noted that Anthony, who will become a free agent this summer, may have to tell the Knicks he won't settle for being on a non-contender, as Bryant did with the Lakers, and that the talent around him needed to be upgraded.

It was good enough Sunday until Anthony took over.

Lakers re-sign G Harris

Published January 26, 2014Sports Network

El Segundo, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Lakers signed guard Manny Harris to a second 10-day contract prior to Sunday's game against the New York Knicks.

Harris averaged 6.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 20.9 minutes in five games after initially joining the Lakers on Jan. 16.

Prior to being signed, the third-year pro had been playing for the Los Angeles Defenders in the NBA Developmental League and averaged a league-best 30.6 points along with 6.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 13 starts for the Lakers' D- League affiliate.

The Lakers have signed guard Manny Harris to a second 10-day contract, the team announced Sunday.

Harris was recently called up from the NBA Development League, where he played for the Lakers' affiliate (D-Fenders).

Through five games with the Lakers, Harris has averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds, playing a robust 20.9 minutes a night.

Harris will earn $52,017 through the contract, making his total earnings at $104,034 for 20 days with the Lakers.

Once his second deal is up, the Lakers will have to either let him go as a free agent or sign him for the remainder of the season.

The Lakers finish their seven-game trip Sunday, visiting Madison Square Garden to play the New York Knicks.

Harris' Big Night Leads Magic Past Lakers
NEW YORK -- Mitch Kupchak is about as buttoned up as they come. If there was ever some kind of meter fashioned to read the Los Angeles Lakers general manager's homeostasis level, it would surely show Kupchak in a constant state of anywhere from 4 to 6. Never too high. Never too low.

With that in mind, it was almost jarring to hear (by Kupchak's standards) unbridled optimism from the GM a couple weeks ago when the team was mired in a stretch of eight losses in nine games.

Nick Young and Pau Gasol have been posting big numbers, but it hasn't translated into wins.
"I just expect our players -- and they will -- to play hard and to compete, and they'll be fun to watch if they do that," Kupchak said.

His choice of that particular f-word couldn't help but serve as a reminder of that Sports Illustrated magazine cover from October 2012 featuring a preening Steve Nash and Dwight Howard with the now infamous tagline, "Now this is going to be fun."

Since Kupchak laid out his expectations, the undermanned Lakers have played hard, for the most part. They've competed, for the most part. But they haven't won, with their slump stretching to 15 losses in their past 18 games after a 114-105 defeat to the lowly Orlando Magic on Friday. There's nothing fun about that.

Kobe Bryant has advice for Carmelo Anthony

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Anthony broke Bryant's MSG scoring record with 62 points Friday
Bryant said that N.Y. is a great place to play
But if Anthony stays in N.Y., Bryant said he needs to make it clear that he wants to be with a contender

NEW YORK (AP) — While Madison Square Garden was buzzing Friday night, so was Kobe Bryant's phone.

Carmelo Anthony was on his way to a 62-point night, moving past Bryant's total of 61 that had stood for nearly five years as the record in the building. And plenty of people wanted to make sure Bryant knew.

"I got a lot of messages from people saying Melo's going after your record tonight," Bryant said. "It's amazing. He went to work. He got hot and didn't cool off."

Bryant wasn't able to play when the Lakers returned to the building on Sunday, still recovering from a broken left knee. He said he had called Anthony, his friend and teammate on the last two U.S. Olympic teams, on Friday night to congratulate him.

Bryant said that having the arena's record wasn't particularly important to him, but did stress how much the building meant.

"This is the Mecca of basketball. There's so much history here in the culture of the game, what this building means. This is the last one left in terms of all the history," Bryant said, naming former Knicks such as Willis Reed and Walt Frazier. "This is the last building left that carries that history with it."

Kobe gives Carmelo Anthony advice
Updated: January 26, 2014, 5:14 PM ET
By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

Kobe Not Recruiting Carmelo

Kobe Bryant addressed the media to say that while he will offer Carmelo Anthony advice on his free agency if he seeks it, he won't actively recruit Anthony to the Lakers.

Carmelo Scores 62 In Knicks' Win
NEW YORK -- Kobe Bryant considers Carmelo Anthony one of his closest friends in the NBA, but he will not be actively recruiting the Knicks forward to join the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent this summer.

"Well, everybody wants to play in Los Angeles," Bryant said before the Lakers played the Knicks on Sunday when asked about Anthony's potential interest in joining him in purple and gold. "I mean New York is a beautiful place, don't get me wrong, but it is colder than s--- out here. You know, palm trees and beaches obviously are a little more appealing.

"All jokes aside, I think that players, when that time comes, will have to make the best decision for them and their families. I try not to think about it too much. If he wants to call me for advice later as a friend, I will be more than happy to give it to him."

Bob Donnan/USA TODAY Sports
Kobe Bryant called friend Carmelo Anthony a "great player," but said he wouldn't actively recruit the pending free agent to join the Lakers.
Part of that advice will surely be how the 11-year veteran Anthony can shake his reputation as simply a scorer who hasn't come close to a championship since his days playing for Syracuse University. That reputation was only exacerbated by Anthony breaking Bryant's Madison Square Garden scoring record of 61 points with 62 of his own Friday, but doing it on a Knicks team with a dismal 16-27 record.

Bryant, who won championships in three of his first six seasons in the league, went through a seven-year drought before winning another one, something that took its toll the same way Anthony's ringless career has.

Kobe says he wouldn't mind playing with 'Melo
By Adam Zagoria, for NBA.com
Posted Jan 26, 2014 3:54 PM - Updated Jan 26, 2014 4:24 PM
NEW YORK -- Less than 48 hours after Carmelo Anthony went off for a Madison Square Garden-record 62 points, the man whose record he broke arrived in town and indicated he wouldn't mind playing with Anthony after the Knicks star hits free agency this summer.

"Well, I mean everybody wants to play in Los Angeles," Kobe Bryant, whose 61-point Garden outing was eclipsed by Anthony's performance against the Charlotte Bobcats, said Sunday before the Lakers played the Knicks. "New York's a beautiful place, don't get me wrong but it's colder than [expletive deleted] out here."
"It's palm trees and beaches obviously are a little more appealing."
Bryant, who is friendly with Anthony and teamed with him on the 2012 Olympic team that won the gold in London in 2012, said he'd be happy to offer "advice" when the time comes.
"If he wants to come for advice later as a friend I'll be more than happy to give it to him," said Bryant, who remains out with a fractured left knee and gave no update on his timetable for a return.
Anthony has said both that he will opt out after this season and that he will "retire in New York."

He could sign a a five-year deal with New York worth $129,135,806, whereas if he signs with another team, the most he can make is $95,897,372 over four years.

"All jokes aside, I think that players, when that time comes, will have to make the best decisions for them and their families," Bryant said.
Bryant also said that all scorers -- Anthony, himself and Michael Jordan included -- needed to win a championship in order to validate themselves as a winner instead of just a scorer.

Lakers fall to Carmelo Anthony (36 points) and the Knicks, 110-103

By Mike Bresnahan
January 26, 2014, 3:03 p.m.

NEW YORK -- The Lakers ended their seven-game Grammy trip the same way they started it.

Another loss.

The New York Knicks beat the Lakers, 110-103, behind 35 points from Carmelo Anthony at Madison Square Garden.

Jodie Meeks had 24 point while Pau Gasol and Manny Harris each had 18 points for the Lakers (16-29), who went 2-5 on their longest trip of the season.

It wasn't a matchup for the ages. Not since 1960 had the Knicks and Lakers played each other with both teams 10 or more games below .500, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

The Lakers' defense was, as usual, peaceful and accommodating. The Lakers gave up 100 or more points for a 12th consecutive game, something they hadn't done since 1988-89.

Anthony was again a factor Sunday after springing for a Madison Square Garden record 62 points against Charlotte on Friday. With the Lakers down by three points in the final minutes, Anthony scored on a a mid-range shot over rookie forward Ryan Kelly and again on a driving layup for a 105-98 lead.

Kelly, a second-round draft pick, was assigned to defend Anthony most of the game.

The Lakers are 3-16 since Dec. 21, and their prospects for a victory won't get easier when they get home. They play Eastern Conference front-runner Indiana (34-9) on Tuesday at Staples Center.

With Anthony's free agency a hot topic, and his ties to Bryant and Los Angeles, the Knicks forward could wind up there next season. But is teaming up a with an aging Bryant the right play if he wants a championship?

Carmelo Anthony will be a free agent this summer, and speculation about him teaming up with Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles is a popular storyline this NBA season.

Now might be the perfect time for Carmelo Anthony to go for 63.

The Lakers are in town, meaning Melo has a great chance to break his newly-minted Knicks scoring record of 62 points.

Anthony will get to try to surpass it against his old nemesis, Mike D'Antoni, who, as Knicks fans well remember, didn't do a lot of X's and O's at the defensive end when he coached in the Garden.

He still doesn't, apparently, as the Lakers stumbled into town after allowing rebuilding and talent-shy Orlando to put up 114 points on Friday, their 15th loss in their last 18 games. That followed a sieve-like effort in a loss against the Heat, which had the old Knick coach boiling mad.

"There's nothing wrong with the defense (schematically),'' D'Antoni insisted. "It's what everybody does. Can we do it better? Yeah. Could we run back on defense? Yeah. Could we not turn the ball over? Yeah. Can we pay attention to your man? Yes. Can we not get back-doored? Yes. Everything in that room is fixable.''

Bryant's advice for Melo: Win a championship
January 26, 2014 7:22 pm ET

NEW YORK -- Two days after Carmelo Anthony set the Madison Square Garden scoring record, the guy who used to own it -- Kobe Bryant -- stopped by to say hello.

Much to the chagrin of road crowd that adores him more than any other, Bryant could do no more than speak on Sunday as the Lakers visited the Knicks. The five-time champion, resplendent in all black, remains relegated to the exercise bike as he recovers from a broken leg.

"That's killing me," Bryant said of his current plight. "Absolutely killing me."

This week marks the six-week timetable for Bryant's recovery, and he'll visit a doctor when the Lakers return from this seven-game road trip to find out what the next step will be.

Until then, Bryant offered his thoughts on his close friend Anthony's record-setting night, Melo's stature in the game and future in New York as a Knick.

"I just remember being very calm," Bryant said, reflecting on his 61-point game at the Garden in 2009. "I remember everything just being very peaceful. Normally when you come to the Garden, the first thing you do is you kind of look around and see who's at the game and soak it all in. But on that particular evening, I just felt a supreme focus."

Bryant called Anthony Friday night to congratulate him and let him know it was OK to "cool down" on Sunday. Anthony did, but not enough to pull the Lakers out of their tailspin. Melo had 35 points in the Knicks' 110-103 victory over Bryant's Lakers, who lost five of seven on the trip and have dropped 15 of 18 since Bryant went down only six games into his comeback from Achilles surgery in December.

Though separated by only two games in the loss column, these two glamour-market teams are on opposite ends of the Earth when it comes to whatever success can be squeezed out of this season. In the stacked West, the Lakers (16-29) have virtually no chance of making the playoffs. In the East, the Knicks (17-27) are only one game out of the eighth seed -- and more important, 4 1/2 games out of sixth, the first spot that wouldn't virtually guarantee a first-round sweep.

Kobe Bryant is supportive of Pau Gasol's rant at Lakers teammates
After the Lakers' loss to Orlando on Friday, Pau Gasol showed his frustration in the locker room and Kobe Bryant says that's a good thing.

By Mike Bresnahan
January 26, 2014, 4:56 p.m.

NEW YORK — Kobe Bryant wasn't smiling when an angry Pau Gasol went wild in the Lakers' locker room a few nights ago. Nobody was.

Bottom is coming up fast on Lakers after latest loss, 110-103 at N.Y

But Bryant revealed Sunday that he supported Gasol's post-game rant after the Lakers lost to the woeful Orlando Magic on Friday. Gasol lit into teammates and hurled his basketball shoes in the locker room that night.

"That was the most irritated I've seen Pau in a long, long time," Bryant said. "I haven't really seen him come in and have a tantrum in the locker room, which is good. It's something that needs to be done.

"It can't be something where we're losing and it becomes accepted. Or the whole 'We gave it a good effort' sort of thing. We don't do that around here. That's not what it's about. It's not about giving good effort. It's about winning championships."

Bryant has played only six games this season. He's well aware of it.

He's had to watch from afar as the Lakers (16-29) lost 16 of their last 19 games, including 110-103 Sunday against New York. He's more than ready to ramp things up if he gets doctors' clearance this week.

"I'll finally do more things than just riding a bike," he said. "That's killing me. Absolutely killing me."

Bryant hasn't played since sustaining a fractured knee Dec. 17 in Memphis.

NBA Rumors: Steve Nash suffers back injury

BY BRYAN ROSE - JAN 27TH, 2014 AT 5:11 PM

Los Angeles Lakers point guard Steve Nash has only played in six games this season due to injury.

Out for months dealing with a variety of ailments, Nash was hopeful to return to the Lakers this week. That may now be a long shot as the veteran tweaked his back during Lakers practice on Monday putting his immediate status in doubt.

DAntoni said Steve Nash did not practice Monday. Blake and Farmar were able to ramp things up. Meeks/Pau sat out
There’s no word on how significant Nash’s injury is currently, though any injury regarding Nash and his back is bad news. You’ll likely recall Nash sitting propped up along a baseline, elevating his often sore back.

At this point, you have to wonder how effective Nash will be once he does return. He’s obviously not the same player he was even a few short years ago and he struggles to remain on the floor for an entire game at this point.

We’ll update his status moving forward once the Lakers release more information.

Lakers' Steve Nash missed practice Monday with a tweaked back
By Zach Harper | NBA writer
January 27, 2014 5:10 pm ET

The Los Angeles Lakers haven't been able to get much out of Steve Nash since trading two first round draft picks and two second round draft picks for him back in the summer of 2012. That was the summer that was supposed to bring the Lakers back to a championship level and instead they had just one frustrating campaign of Dwight Howard and 56 total games out of Nash in 1.5 seasons.

They were hoping to get Nash back on the court soon but he missed practice because of a tweaked back and now will have to wait until Thursday to see if he can return to the practice floor.

Nash played in 50 games with the team last season due to various injuries, most notably a fractured tibia early in November of 2012. So far this season, hamstring injuries and back problems have allowed him to play in only six games. He's averaging 6.7 points and 4.8 rebounds in 22.5 minutes. He's made only 26.1 percent of his 46 total shot attempts.

Nearing comeback attempt, Steve Nash tweaks back, could play Friday

Kobe Bryant, left, and Steve Nash have spent most of the 2013-14 NBA season in street clothes because of injuries. Each has played only six games. (Nathan Denette / Associated Press / January 20, 2013)
By Eric Pincus
January 27, 2014, 2:31 p.m.

The Lakers scheduled practice for Monday, despite returning Sunday from a long, seven-game road trip, with hopes of getting Steve Nash back on the practice floor.

Out for all but six games this season, battling through nerve root irritation in his back (that also caused hamstring issues), Nash was a late scratch on Monday after a new, minor back injury.

"Everything went well for him in Vancouver while he was up there, while we were on the 12-day road trip," said Lakers spokesman John Black. "He was on board to have a practice before he comes back and plays. It was sort of a freakish thing, he tweaked his back today, not related [to the nerve issue]."

Nash said he isn't worried about the minor setback.

"I'm fine," said Nash, who felt something in his back when he got out of bed Monday morning.

"I have no idea what's going to happen but I've done all the work and I feel ready to practice again," he continued, speaking briefly outside of the team's practice facility in El Segundo.

"The plan for him is to have a practice on Thursday and then he's basically day to day," said Black. "We'll update you on whether he'll play Friday based on how Thursday's practice goes."

Los Angeles Lakers: Steve Nash Should Probably Retire, Suffers Another Setback

January 27, 2014 5:45 pm EST by Scott Groff

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash just can’t catch a break. According to Kevin Ding of Bleacher Report, Nash was expected to practice on Monday as the Lakers returned from their Grammy trip, but tweaked his back while at home.
It is supposedly a minor setback but with Nash– nothing should be taken with a grain of salt at this point. The fact that you are capable of injuring your back at home, is a pretty good sign that it will not hold up in practice situations, let alone in games. It looks like he will try to start practicing on Thursday with the hopes of playing next week at some point.
I understand Nash has a lot of pride and does not want to end his career this way. Everyone is hoping things can turn around and he can play at a high level again. He has done everything in his power to try to help the Lakers out.
He gets full credit for that.
With that said, he is doing more harm than good trying to get back on the court. Not just to himself but the Lakers organization as well.

Injured Lakers star Kobe Bryant will be evaluated by a doctor on Tuesday. (Alan Diaz / Associated Press / January 22, 2014)

By Eric Pincus

January 27, 2014, 3:13 p.m.
This season, an injury report from the Lakers is rarely brief. Seven of the team's 15 players are battling through ailments.

Kobe Bryant, who suffered a lateral tibial plateau fracture in his left knee on Dec. 17, will be evaluated Tuesday by Dr. Stephen Lombardo of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.

Bryant was originally declared out for six weeks.

Xavier Henry, also out with a knee injury, was examined Monday by Lombardo. He is still out with a bone bruise, scheduled to be reevaluated next week.

Henry was injured Dec. 29 in a loss at Staples Center to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Lakers have been decimated most at point guard but could receive three players back relatively quickly.

"Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar both saw Dr. [Luga] Podesta [of the Podesta Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute] today. They both were given a green light to sort of ramp up what they're going to do," said Lakers spokesman John Black. "They're not cleared for full practices yet, but they're cleared for basketball-related [activities], which they did today."

Blake was declared out for six weeks on Dec. 12 with a torn ligament in his right elbow. Farmar, who tore his left hamstring for the second time this season Dec. 31 in a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, is sidelined for an estimated four weeks.

"It's just a matter of going a little while without any setbacks," said Farmar. "I've been bored ... with this injury, you don't feel too injured. It's not painful. You don't feel hurt."
