Preview: Lakers vs. Indiana Pacers

By Eric Pincus
January 28, 2014, 6:30 a.m.

Last year, the Indiana Pacers (34-9) emerged as a playoff contender. More than halfway through the 2013-14 season, the Pacers have the best overall record in the NBA.

Injuries have helped push the Lakers near the bottom of the standings at 16-29.

The Lakers are coming off a seven-game road trip, losing their last four and finishing the trip 2-5.

Indiana holds teams to an NBA-best 90.2 points a game. The Lakers allow a league-high 106.1.

Once again, the Lakers will play without Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back) and Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Xavier Henry (knee).

Key matchup
Despite the Lakers' lack of team success, Pau Gasol has delivered a tremendous January.
Through 13 games in 2014, Gasol has averaged 20.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.8 blocks.
He will certainly be challenged by the defense of Roy Hibbert, who stands at 7-foot 2, 290 pounds.
Hibbert blocks 2.6 shots a night while averaging 11.9 points and 7.8 rebounds.
The Pacers also have David West, who always seems to score at will against the Lakers, and Luis Scola off the bench.

Pacers-Lakers Preview

P.J. Carlesimo previews the Tuesday night matchup between the Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Lakers.

The Indiana Pacers are struggling defensively, and most of their problems stem from first-half letdowns.

The Pacers hope to avoid another slow start Tuesday night in their first meeting of the season with the Los Angeles Lakers, who are returning home from a disappointing Grammy Awards road trip.

Indiana (34-9) enters the finale of a five-game trip still with the NBA's best record, but it's been a bit vulnerable lately. Over the last three games, the Pacers have allowed an average of 114.7 points -- 24.5 more than their league- leading mark.

They've been getting run over in the first half, surrendering an average of 59.0 points on 51.5 percent shooting. The Pacers have been unable to keep up, and they've trailed by at least 10 going into halftime in each of the last three games. They had a 19-point deficit in Saturday's 109-96 loss to Denver.

"Teams are not scared of us," said Lance Stephenson, who had 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting. "They're coming out aggressive and they're playing harder. We've got to commit to the challenge and play harder than them."

Although the scuffling Lakers (16-29) have lost four in a row and 16 of 19, they could pose some more problems for Indiana.

Los Angeles has hit triple digits in each of its last eight games, averaging 107.6 points, and has been one of the league's highest-scoring first-half teams over the last few weeks with an average of 54.2 points in the past 12 games.

Pacers close out western trip against Lakers

Sports Network
9:48 a.m. CST, January 28, 2014

Sports.com — The Indiana Pacers will try to escape their western road trip with a winning record Tuesday night as they visit the Staples Center to face the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Pacers, still the owners of the NBA's best mark and the only team in the league with single-digit losses, are 2-2 on their sojourn. They bested the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, but fell to the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets.

The Denver loss was most recent, a 109-96 setback on Saturday night.

Down 19 at the half, the Pacers scored the first 11 points before Denver went on a run. Indiana cut it to six early in the fourth, but the Nuggets did enough to prevail.

Lance Stephenson led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds, followed by 18 points and 11 boards from All-Star Paul George. David West added 16 and George Hill finished with 10.

Both Roy Hibbert and backup center Ian Mahinmi fouled out as the Pacers racked up 27 fouls. Couple that number with 17 turnovers and there's the recipe for beating Indiana.

"As is the case with most of our losses, we fouled too much with 27 fouls and we turned the ball over too much with 17 turnovers," said Pacers coach Frank Vogel. "Those two things have led to most of our losses."

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Indiana Pacers will try to escape their western road trip with a winning record Tuesday night as they visit the Staples Center to face the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers return home after a long annual road trip to accommodate the Grammys being held at the Staples Center. This season, LA went 2-5 on the odyssey with four of the five losses coming in a row at the end of the trip.

The Lakers last loss came in Madison Square Garden, a 110-103 defeat at the hands of the New York Knicks.

Jodie Meeks went 6-of-8 from 3-point range to pace the Lakers with 24 points, while Pau Gasol had 20 along with 13 rebounds. Manny Harris ended with 18 points for Los Angeles.

"Again, we just find a way to lose," Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni remarked. "It just oozes away from us."

Pau Gasol says playoffs ‘are a utopia right now’ for Lakers
Brett Pollakoff Jan 28, 2014, 12:03 AM EST

From Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary:

uto·pia (noun) yu̇-ˈtō-pē-ə : an imaginary and indefinitely remote place.

Pau Gasol has been a bit more vocal as of late on the topic of the Lakers’ recent struggles, even going so far as to throw a tantrum in front of teammates and Kobe Bryant in the locker room following an especially unpleasant loss to the Orlando Magic.

Speaking to reporters in Spanish following the loss to the Knicks in New York on Sunday, Gasol continued to deliver some honest commentary about the fortunes of his team moving forward, and obviously the future isn’t exactly bright.

As translated by HoopsHype:

The playoffs are a utopia right now. (…) The Western Conference has a lot of great teams that are playing much better than us right now. (…) If things don’t change very quickly, I don’t know if we will have many chances.

So, this season hasn’t gone the way you thought it would Lakers fans and you’re not quite sure what to do. It’s understandable. After winning 16 championships and playing in 31 NBA Finals, this team has and will always have championship expectations. They have only missed the postseason five times in a franchise history that dates back to 1948. In all likelihood, this season will mark just the sixth time they’ve missed the playoffs and we’re here to talk you through it.

Tweet your questions, comments or concerns about the Lakers with an #ESPNLAKERS hashtag and we’ll do our best to answer as many as we can each Monday the rest of the way.

The Lakers are falling fast south of the border. What needs to be done besides dumping everyone and starting fresh? -- @JackieEllen83

Well, they can’t dump everyone and start fresh as much as that might be tempting. Remember, they re-signed Kobe Bryant to a two-year $50 million contract. Steve Nash is still on the books for almost $10 million next season if he comes back this season and unless Nick Young opts out, you’re looking at Young, Robert Sacre and Kendall Marshall coming back as well (for deals around the minimum).

Outside of that, the Lakers are still in position to offer a max contract or perhaps sign a couple of players for less than the max. The problem is this free agent class is top heavy with stars who are all expected to stay with their current teams, such as LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Dirk Nowitzki. That leaves you looking at guys like Luol Deng and Lance Stephenson, who aren’t going to make the Lakers a championship team overnight. Perhaps the Lakers’ best chance at getting a star player this offseason will be through the draft, if they end up with a top five pick.

Magic Johnson Rips into Mike D'Antoni and LA Lakers on 'The Tonight Show'
By Zach Buckley , National NBA Featured Columnist Jan 28, 2014

Magic Johnson shed his Los Angeles Lakers jersey in 1996, but the Hall of Famer still keeps a close watch on his franchise.

As he told Jay Leno during a recent appearance on "The Tonight Show," he isn't happy with what he's seen.

Injuries, Johnson admitted, have played a big role in L.A.'s struggles. The Lakers (16-29) have gotten a combined 12 games out of Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash. Those absences certainly haven't helped matters.

But, Johnson said, the Lakers have made some "critical mistakes" that go beyond the injury report.

The first was choosing Mike D'Antoni over legendary coach Phil Jackson. "We're the Lakers, we got to have a championship coach," Johnson told Leno. "We made a critical mistake in not bringing Phil Jackson back."

Johnson's biggest complaint with D'Antoni? "He don't teach defense," he said.

There is nothing wrong with someone voicing an opinion if they truly believe in it. I would think less of him if I thought he was not being honest. I think maintaining your own integrity is more important than lying to protect the mistakes of this franchise.

Another day, another tirade by Magic Johnson against Mike D'Antoni.

I would say he has an end game strategy behind his daily Laker bashing, but that would be to assume that he's motivated by something other than Magic Johnson Promotions.

He is petty and small, two words that should never have to be associated with a Laker legend and a 6-9 man.

Magic's not wrong, The Lakers have made mistakes in hiring a coach. TWICE!!!!. But there's nothing we can do during the season, it's lost, it hurts. WE better clean house in the off season, mistakes need to be fixed then, coaches and players.

Well you're basically a Jeanie fan boy, so of course you think gossiping like a female is acceptable. Magic needs to go tell MDA how he feels and himself, and as far as "integrity" goes.....keeping stuff in house shows integrity and is professional and courteous.

Jim Buss doesn't air anybody out publicly, PERIOD.

magic is not helping the lakers when he opens his mouth. and neither is anybody else.

As far as I'm concerned, whats happening with the Lakers is an atrocity, and I'm sure Magic is taking it harder than I am. You are misinterpreting "gossiping like a female" as not standing by quietly and passively enabling this atrocity to continue.

Just in case you aren't paying attention in your history class, long story short is its bad form to not speak out against atrocity. Alot of bad things are to blame for that.

Just in case you aren't paying attention to your history class, there are a lot of atrocities that have been perpetrated in the world. Genocides, mass murders, torturing of whole populations -- the Lakers suffering through an injury-riddled season with a coach you don't like doesn't quite make the cut.

So bravo to Magic Johnson for being so courageous as to call out Jim Buss on every media outlet that will put a camera in front of his face. His bravery in speaking out against atrocity is an inspiration to us all.

Once again Magic is right. Some of you on here who are overly sensitive about ANYTHING negative that's said about the Lakers need to develop a thicker skin. The man's telling the truth, so accept it and quit bashing a Laker legend, it makes you look silly!!!

Not only that, but Kobe aired out his dirty laundry to the media that he wasn't happy losing and it got us Pau Gasol. I don't hear anybody bashing Kobe because it got us 2 championships. The Magic hate on this site is beyond ignorant!!!

I usually don't post "bleacher reports" but this one was about real news and I was sure it would be picked up by the main media.

Magic is right imo but as Black Salt said above it is probably not helpful to the organization.

Magic Johnson makes Lakers' Mike D'Antoni his latest target

Lakers great Magic Johnson shares his thoughts on the team during an appearance on the "Tonight Show".

By Ben Bolch
January 28, 2014, 12:34 p.m.

Magic Johnson torched his favorite team again, telling “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno on Monday night the Lakers were in a bind because of “some critical mistakes.”

The biggest of those mistakes, according to Johnson? Hiring Coach Mike D’Antoni instead of Phil Jackson early last season.

“He don’t teach defense,” Johnson said. “I can’t stand to watch the Lakers play because the same play happens every single time on the Lakers -- pick and roll and the guard goes all the way in for a layup.

“What are we, 40-something games into the season? The teams run the same play on us. We haven’t stopped it yet. Uh, duh.”

D’Antoni, whose team has given up at least 100 points in 12 consecutive games, declined to address Johnson’s comments Tuesday morning at his team’s shoot-around.

“Next subject,” D’Antoni said.

Johnson, who recently ripped Lakers executive Jim Buss for what Johnson characterized as a series of bad decisions, said his admiration for D’Antoni was conditional.

“Coach D’Antoni, I like him when he was with Phoenix,” Johnson said. “We’re the Lakers. We’ve got to have a championship coach. We made a critical mistake in not bringing Phil Jackson back.”

Johnson also said the Lakers needed to make themselves more attractive to a free-agent class this summer that could include LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony.

D'Antoni shrugs off Magic Johnson's latest criticism

ESPNLosAngeles.com

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Magic Johnson again criticized the Los Angeles Lakers for hiring coach Mike D'Antoni.

"We made some critical mistakes," Johnson said to Leno. "Coach D'Antoni, I like him . . . When he was with Phoenix."

Johnson's line brought laughter and applause from Leno's L.A.-based studio audience.

"Because we're the Lakers, we got to have a championship coach," Johnson said. "We made a critical mistake in not bringing Phil Jackson back. That was a critical mistake."

Beyond D'Antoni never winning a ring, or making it to the Finals, in 12 seasons as head coach with Denver, Phoenix, New York and Los Angeles, Johnson said had an issue with D'Antoni's approach to defense.

"I can't stand to watch the Lakers play because the same play happens every single time on the Lakers: pick-and-roll and the guard goes all the way in for a layup. We're 40-something games into the season. The teams run the same play, Jay, on us. We haven't stopped it yet. Uh . . . duh!"

D'Antoni was asked about Johnson's comments following shootaround Tuesday morning in preparation for his team's game Tuesday night against the Indiana Pacers.

"No," D'Antoni said when asked if he had any thoughts about Johnson's statement. "Next subject"

Johnson, who went 5-11 in 16 games as Lakers head coach during the 1993-94 season, made similar comments in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, telling the newspaper D'Antoni's hiring was, "a wrong decision."

Magic Johnson: Not bringing back Phil Jackson was a 'critical mistake'

PUBLISHED 8 hours and 23 minutes ago LAST UPDATED 8 hours and 23 minutes ago

Magic Johnson is frustrated with how his Los Angeles Lakers are playing under Mike D'Antoni, which is a fact that he hasn't hidden.

In an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, he continued to publicize those thoughts, calling the decision to go with Mike D'Antoni instead of Phil Jackson, "a critical mistake."

The direction in which the Lakers chose to go with their coaching search also affected the defense, in Johnson's estimate. Basically, we learned that the only thing Johnson likes about this current iteration of the Lakers is Kobe Bryant.

Don't think Lebron would sign up to come over to a poor team, many have said that, including Magic, but that's probably bang on...

I don't like airing dirty laundry either but his comments were pretty much correct from what I heard.

I agree and am surprised at Magic actually. He had some comments about Dennis Rodman that were namecalling to the mack, like Rodman has the IQ to make good decisions anyway, lol.

He doesn't teach English either?

Bye.

I guess his english is good enough to buy a stake in the Dodgers and have a net worth of 700 million dollars in 2013
