Magic Johnson apparently isn't the only one who thinks the Lakers are unwatchable.

The Lakers' ratings on Time Warner Cable SportsNet declined 37.5% over the team's first 40 games versus the same period last season, according to Nielsen ratings in the Los Angeles market.

Lakers games averaged a 2.72 rating over those games, down from a 4.35 last season, TWC's first as the team's broadcast partner.

"I wouldn't be overly concerned about it, but I certainly would keep an eye on it," said David Carter, executive director of the USC Sports Business Institute. "That kind of precipitous drop, if it becomes something where they have that drop and then they never recover from it, that's certainly a real problem."

The Clippers' TV ratings also have dipped this season, though not as sharply. The team's average rating of 1.28 on Prime Ticket in L.A. for the first 40 games was down 14.7% from the 1.5 rating at the same point last season.

Dark Times Are Just Beginning for Injury-Ravaged Los Angeles Lakers

By Kevin Ding , NBA National Columnist Jan 29, 2014

LOS ANGELES — It got even tougher Tuesday night.

The Los Angeles Lakers released official confirmation that Kobe Bryant’s left knee isn’t close to being fully healed, as Bleacher Report reported Monday. Realistically, Bryant figures to miss more than another month considering he isn’t even scheduled to be re-evaluated for three weeks, according to the Lakers.

Bryant’s protracted timeline far superseded the predictable news of the Lakers losing to the Indiana Pacers, and in fact, an appropriate snapshot of the Lakers’ season came in the opening minutes of the game:

While the Lakers were playing host to the team with the NBA’s best record in a theoretically big game, Lakers vice president of public relations John Black was sitting next to team doctor Steve Lombardo, hammering out the grim details of the latest Bryant injury news. Neither Black nor Lombardo was even watching the game.

Lakers' Kobe Bryant expected to miss All-Star game

By GREG BEACHAM AP Sports Writer
POSTED: 01/28/2014 08:38:28 PM PST | UPDATED: A DAY AGO

LOS ANGELES—Kobe Bryant is expected to miss the NBA All-Star game due to continued pain and swelling in his injured left knee.
The Los Angeles Lakers provided an injury update on the superstar guard Tuesday night, saying Bryant will be out for at least three more weeks before he is re-examined.

Bryant was voted a starter in the All-Star game, which is in New Orleans on Feb. 16—less than three weeks away. Bryant had previously said he hoped fans wouldn't vote for him, but the fourth-leading scorer in NBA history was elected to the game for the 16th straight time anyway.

Lakers team physician Steve Lombardo examined Bryant after he returned from the Lakers' two-week road trip for Tuesday's home game against Indiana, and the results apparently weren't encouraging.

Bryant broke a bone in his knee Dec. 17, just six games into his return from an eight-month recovery of his torn left Achilles tendon. The Lakers initially speculated he would be out for six weeks with his knee injury, but Bryant will be out much longer.

Bryant will continue with a program of light exercise, including time on a stationary bike. He has spoken openly of the difficulty of the rehabilitation and its slow pace.

Anonymous NBA General Manager: Kevin Love to Lakers Is '100 Percent Certainty'
By Zach Buckley , National NBA Featured Columnist Jan 30, 2014

Great news, Los Angeles Lakers fans. Help is on the way.

At least, that's what one general manager thinks. The only problem is even if the executive is right, that help won't be coming until 2015.

The general manager, speaking anonymously, told ESPN Insider Chris Broussard (subscription required) All-Star forward Kevin Love coming to the Lakers as a free agent in 2015 is "a 100 percent certainty."

It really doesn't get any clearer than that, does it?

Well, it's not quite that simple.

Projecting anything this far in advance is far from an exact science.

What if the Minnesota Timberwolves make a prolonged playoff run between now and then? Or Minnesota becomes convinced Love is leaving and ships him out to a team that has a championship ceiling? What happens if Kobe Bryant clearly isn't the same player (assuming, of course, he's still playing at that point) and the Lakers don't have any other attractive pieces to sell?

Why LA Lakers Have Never Found a Pau Gasol Trade They Like
By J.M. Poulard , Featured Columnist Jan 30, 2014

Pau Gasol has become an urban legend of sorts, destined to haunt the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Spaniard has routinely been involved in trade rumors, but the Purple and Gold simply have not been able to pull the trigger on a deal involving him. It’s a fascinating twist of fate because he was once upon a time one of the most coveted assets in the league.

Heck, one could argue he still is, provided he comes at the right price. Determining his true value has been a complicated task for a front office that saw Gasol rescue it from first-round playoff exits.

How did the Lakers get here?

Judge Blocks Class Action Lawsuit Over Lakers and Dodgers Channels
8:57 AM PST 1/29/2014 by Eriq Gardner

Time Warner Cable and two Los Angeles sports teams win a court battle on Tuesday.

Christopher Patey
L.A. Lakers owners Jeanie and Jim Buss
If given the choice between seeing live professional sports or having a lighter cable bill, surveys show that most consumers would prefer the latter. But it will probably take an act of Congress to do anything for these budget-minded TV viewers.

On Tuesday, L.A. Superior Court Judge Amy Hogue shot down a lawsuit filed last June against Time Warner Cable and two Los Angeles sports teams.
In the class action, the plaintiffs objected to being forced to pay about $4-$5 in additional cable fees per month. The lawsuit came after TWC spent $3 billion for Los Angeles Lakers telecast rights and $8 billion for Los Angeles Dodgers telecast rights. Afterward, the cost was allegedly passed along to cable subscribers.

Los Angeles Lakers Are the Anti-Indiana Pacers

By Michael C. Jones
.

COMMENTARY | A brief look at the box score from the Los Angeles Lakers' home loss to the Indiana Pacer is a snapshot of the sad, obvious reality from the perspective of their fans.

Though Pacers star forward Paul George struggled from the field, going just 4-of-10, he contributed in other ways by dishing out six assists and nabbing five rebounds while collecting two steals. Their team balance was apparent -- six players scored in double figures.

For the Pacers, a clear identity of who they are and knowledge of what they do well has carried them to a 35-9 record. They're a small-market team who grew organically into the mold of a championship-caliber squad behind the solid coaching of Frank Vogel and a defensive-minded approach.

The Lakers are the antithesis of most, if not all of these principles.

I am sure you have a lot of company here.

The Lakers will rise again. It's just transition time and I find it very interesting. It must have been hard after Magic and Kareem left. We will have the same as Kobe ends his career.

But we will win again. We are the Lakers

When most of your stars/top 5 players are gone, the ratings dip is to ne expected.

When the Clips have a winning season and a top flight coach with highlight film players resulting in lower ratings, that is of a bigger concern.

Steve Nash, 2 others back in practice

Updated: January 30, 2014, 8:43 PM ET
By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Lakers' long-awaited cavalry finally came in Thursday.

Or at least part of it.

Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar returned to the practice floor, providing the point guard-depleted Lakers a sudden boon in the backcourt.

Steve Nash is the oldest active player in the NBA and will turn 40 next week when the Lakers play the 76ers on Feb. 7.
All three guards are ruled out for the Lakers' next game against the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday, but Nash said he could play as soon as Tuesday at the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Blake (right elbow) and Farmar (left hamstring) could follow shortly thereafter.

"Tomorrow is definitely out, but next week I have extremely high hopes to play," Nash said after going through the first half of Lakers practice Thursday without any limitations.

Nash exited at halftime of the Lakers' loss to Minnesota on Nov. 10 and has not played since because of nerve root irritation in his back and hamstrings. He is averaging 6.7 points and 4.8 assists in six games this season while shooting 26.1 percent from the field. He has two years remaining on his contract with the Lakers, set to pay him $9.4 million this season and $9.7 million in 2014-15.

The two-time MVP is the oldest active player in the NBA. He will turn 40 next week when the Lakers play the Philadelphia 76ers on Feb. 7.

Lakers Practice Report: Updates on Farmar, Blake
The Los Angele s Lakers practiced on Thursday, and Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar provided updates on their respective injuries.
By Shahan Ahmed | Thursday, Jan 30, 2014 | Updated 5:24 PM

Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Steve Nash returned to LA Lakers practice on 1-30-2014.

Thursday’s Los Angeles Lakers practice felt strange.

As the doors to the practice court opened, the Lakers were taking part in 5-on-5 drills, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Steve Nash were all on the court. The Lakers suddenly went from a team with only one point guard, Kendall Marshall, to a team that had four point guards.

Before Mike D’Antoni had the welcomed headache of figuring out how to fit the stable of returning point guards into the rotation, the coach had to deal with Friday’s game against Charlotte Bobcats. Blake, Nash and Farmar were ruled out against the Bobcats, and all three admitted that they are not quite ready to put on a game jersey and hear their names announced over the Lakers’ PA.

Nash, Blake, Farmar practice with Lakers
The Associated Press
Posted January 30, 2014 at 4:14 p.m.

EL SEGUNDO This Lakers season has been riddled with problems, but Thursday practice presented a new issue. A welcomed one.

For the first time all season, the Lakers had too many point guards.

Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar all practiced with the Lakers for the first time since early November as each nears a return from injury.

everyone comes back at the same time it might be a little hectic out there, Farmar said.

Added Blake: we all out there some of us have to play the two-guard, something.

Of those out there, Nash could be the first to return. With his 40th birthday eight days away, Nash is targeting Tuesday in Minnesota as a possible return after spending 12 days in British Columbia (while the Lakers were on the road) working with his personal trainer. Nash, who ruled out returning Friday against Charlotte, has not played since Nov. 10 against the Timberwolves because of nerve irritation in his back.

is the toughest thing I been through in my career, Nash said. came to L.A. with nothing but the highest hopes and expectations, and it been nothing but personal disappointment.

After going so long with only Kendall Marshall, the Lakers are suddenly awash in point guards.

Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar practiced with the team Thursday, creating a flood of players at a position that had been severely lacking.

None of the three will play Friday against Charlotte, and next Tuesday at Minnesota is the earliest they might appear.

Nash hasn't been in a game since Nov. 10 because of nerve damage in his back but said Thursday he had "extremely high hopes" of playing next week. He is averaging 6.7 points and 4.8 assists in only six games.

"I can withstand more demands, more contact, more unpredictable factors, change of direction playing against somebody," said Nash, who rehabilitated with his personal trainer in Vancouver, Canada, most of January. "Those are all things that the nerve and the spine weren't able to handle two weeks ago."

Reporters were able to watch Nash scrimmage for a few minutes before he took a seat on the sideline. He matched up against Marshall for several nondescript plays, though he got past Marshall at one point and found Jordan Hill under the basket for an easy layup.

Pau Gasol says he's probable Friday, despite groin injury

Lakers power forward Pau Gasol and Pacers center Roy Hibbert battle for a rebound during Tuesday's game at Staples Center. (Mark J. Terrill / Associated Press)
By Eric Pincus
January 30, 2014, 2:39 p.m.

After missing practice Thursday, Pau Gasol admitted he's probable for Friday when the Lakers host the Charlotte Bobcats (20-27).

"My groin is sore," said Gasol. "I've just got to keep working on it and we'll see tomorrow."

Gasol noted that he first felt pain in his groin while on the team's seven-game road trip. He didn't feel especially limited until Tuesday night, against the Indiana Pacers.

The Lakers' 7-footer sat out the first couple of minutes of the third quarter but was able to finish the game with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Indiana pulled away in the second half for the 104-92 win.

"Today it feels better [than Tuesday]," he said.

Gasol received treatment while his teammates practiced.

"We'll see if I can give it a go," he Gasol. "It's probable."

Gasol has averaged 16.9 points and 10.2 rebounds in 43 games. He missed two games last month with bronchitis and a sinus infection.

Mitch should do his best then to trade Gasol for Love NOW. So That Lakers would have the new core together next season already.
