The Lakers acquired 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert on Thursday, sending a future second-rounder to the Indiana Pacers..

"We’re happy to add a veteran big man to the roster," said General Manager Mitch Kupchak in a statement. "Roy is a proven All-Star center that will help improve our front line. In addition, he is a consummate professional and we look forward to having him on the team."

Hibbert, originally the 17th overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft, was named to the NBA All-Star team in 2012 and 2014.

Lakers formally sign Williams, Bass, 2nd-round pick Brown

Published 6:48 pm, Thursday, July 9, 2015

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Lou Williams, forward Brandon Bass and second-round draft pick Anthony Brown.

The Lakers announced the signings Thursday, the first day to formally sign new NBA contracts.

Williams and Bass are both 10-year NBA veterans who should bring stability to the Lakers, who are coming off the worst season in franchise history.

Williams was the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year last season with Toronto, averaging a career-best 15.5 points and 152 3-pointers. He also has played for Philadelphia and Atlanta.

Roy Hibbert to Lakers: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction

By Joseph Zucker , Featured Columnist
Jul 9, 2015

The Roy Hibbert era is over for the Indiana Pacers. The team announced it had dealt the 28-year-old big man to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday in exchange for a future second-round draft pick.

Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird commented on the decision, per NBA.com: "I’d like to thank Roy for all his contributions during his time in Indiana. He was a two-time NBA All-Star, and we appreciate everything he did for our franchise both on and off the court."

ESPN.com's Marc Stein was among the first to report the two teams were working on a deal.

Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling believes Hibbert will be a great fit on a younger Lakers team:

Lakers sign Lou Williams, Brandon Bass and rookie Anthony Brown

July 9, 2015
|Updated 3:50 p.m.

BY BILL ORAM / STAFF WRITER

With teams now free to sign free agents, the Lakers have gotten to work finalizing the deals they struck over the weekend, signing veteran free agents Lou Williams and Brandon Bass.

They are still expected to execute a trade for Indiana center Roy Hibbert.

The Lakers also agreed to terms with Anthony Brown, whom they selected with the No. 34 pick in the June 25 draft.

The 28-year-old Williams has spent 10 years in the NBA, playing for Philadelphia, Atlanta and Toronto. Last season with the Raptors he was voted Sixth Man of the Year, averaging a career-high 15.5 points per game.

Williams signed for a reported three years and $21 million.

Lakers News: Kobe Bryant Will ‘Probably’ Shift To Small Forward

Posted by: Ryan Ward Posted date: July 09, 2015

With the Los Angeles Lakers drafting D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson emerging as a potential star in the making last season, there’s been a lot of debate about Kobe Bryant’s position heading into next season.

On Thursday, head coach Byron Scott eluded to Bryant likely shifting over to small forward, according to Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. Times:

Mitch Kupchak: Lakers Missing Out On Free Agents ‘Wasn’t Demoralizing’

Posted by: Corey Hansford Posted date: July 09, 2015 In: News |

Mitch Kupchak

The Los Angeles Lakers failed in their original pursuit of acquiring one of the big names in free agency. LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan, and Greg Monroe all chose to go places other than join the Lakers, forcing the team to move on to other plans.

The Lakers recovered pretty well all things considered, with the trade for center Roy Hibbert being the major move. General manager Mitch Kupchak spoke about missing out on the top targets, saying it wasn’t demoralizing according to Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News:

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired two-time All-Star center Roy Hibbert from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for a future second-round draft pick.

The Lakers and the Pacers formally completed the trade Thursday.

The Pacers dumped their 7-foot-2 big man and his $15.5 million salary for the upcoming season after Hibbert spent the past seven years with Indiana, averaging 11.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots.

The Lakers welcomed Hibbert into their ample salary-cap space after striking out on the biggest names in free agency, including LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan and Greg Monroe.

Hibbert is among the NBA's top defensive centers, but his offensive game is perceived to be in decline despite numbers that are roughly comparable to his best seasons.

I hated Larry Bird with a passion in the 80's, hated every Celtic, hated green.

But I gained so much respect for the guy when he retired, he had a bad back and even though he had a year left on his big contract (for those days) he told the Celt's to keep the money, that he was NOT going to play and would not feel right taking it..

Flash forward to Nash... showed up and sole every dime he could...SOB...!

GM Mitch Kupchak sees playoff potential in Lakers after offseason pickups
July 9, 2015 Updated 9:18 p.m.
BY BILL ORAM / STAFF WRITER

The Lakers hope 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert, left, can regain the form that made him an All-Star in two of the last four years.
R BRENT SMITH, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
It started with high-profile, yet futile, chases of stars. The Lakers’ foray into free agency ended, more or less, with consolation-prize players who might serve functional, foundational roles, but who are unlikely to rocket the Lakers back to championship contention.

Deals that were agreed to last weekend were finalized on the formal first day of free agency Thursday, with the Lakers officially acquiring former All-Star center Roy Hibbert, Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams and power forward Brandon Bass.

LA Lakers Rumors: Team Targeting Big Names Via Trade As Free Agency Dwindles And Jeremy Lin Leaves

The L.A. Lakers have really tried to make a splash in 2015 NBA free agency, but it has not worked in their favor as of yet. With a number of names going to different teams and shunning the Lakers, the team has now started looking more into trades, and rumors have a number of big names on their radar.

Los Angeles missed out on LaMarcus Aldrige, DeAndre Jordan, and have now lost Jeremy Lin to the Charlotte Hornets. It’s time for the team to begin exploring who they could bring in via trades and get some help for their younger players.

Summer League Scouting Report | Wolves vs. Lakers

by Kyle Ratke

Wolves vs. Lakers | 7:30 p.m. CST, Thomas & Mack Center

Where To Watch: NBATV

The moment we’ve all been waiting for.

Well, it’s not the start of the regular season. But it is the first time for fans to watch rookies Karl-Anthony Towns, Tyus Jones and D’Angelo Russell in real game action.

The Wolves have a pretty loaded roster as far as Summer League goes.

There’s Towns and Jones, sure. But there’s also Zach LaVine, who had a pretty solid rookie season, Adreian Payne and Lorenzo Brown.

Summer League is supposed to be about getting young players reps and get acquainted with the rules of the NBA. For the Wolves, though, you can believe that they will be doing their best to do those things, but also to win the tournament. The talent is certainly there to do so.

Upshaw vs Towns
Clarkson vs LaVine

These two matchups should be very revealing and informative for all the players identified

Will Upshaw be able to effectively defend Towns and be a rim defender

Will Clarkson win his battle with the high-flying LaVine

These two talented and young teams have the chance to replace the Spurs and Warriors as being the elite teams in the Western Conference in a few years

To join Lakers, Roy Hibbert waived over $2.2 million of trade bonus

BY ERIC PINCUS
July 10, 2015, 12:18 a.m.
On Thursday, the Lakers added four new players, signing guard Lou Williams, forward Brandon Bass and rookie guard/forward Anthony Brown, while trading for center Roy Hibbert from the Indiana Pacers.

The team managed to milk every drop out of the NBA's $70-million salary cap, getting help along the way from Hibbert, who waived $2.2 million of his trade bonus to join the Lakers.

Hibbert was eligible to receive 15% of his $15.5-million salary for the coming season ($2.3 million), to be paid out by the Pacers. Instead the two-time All-Star will receive a bonus of just $78,185.

His salary now counts as $15.6 million on the Lakers' books for the coming season, even if the Pacers are responsible for a small sliver.

Taking a look at the Lakers' swing-and-miss free agency
The Sports Post

JUL 10, 2015 8:54a ET

By Miles Wray

Even though it’s been plenty of years since the Los Angeles Lakers have signed a marquee free agent, the team is always a lock to receive meetings with the game’s biggest names during the Twitter-gossip bonanza that is the early July moratorium/negotiating period. Like most summers, recruiting free agents was a giant priority for the Lakers, but a priority for a different reason than it was five or so years ago, when the team would look to add the final piece to a championship roster.
