Roy Hibbert is up for the 'challenge' of playing with Kobe Bryant
by Ananth Pandian - cbssports.com

After a disappointing end to his tenure with the Indiana Pacers, Roy Hibbert is hoping for a fresh start next season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Hibbert was traded to the Lakers in a salary dump after the Pacers made it clear that the former All-Star was not in their future plans. But instead of moping around thinking about how the Pacers treated him, Hibbert has been energized by the trade and is excited about the opportunity to be coached by former player Byron Scott.

Hibbert is even excited to be playing with Kobe Bryant, who usually demands a lot from his teammates. This doesn't seem to bother Hibbert as he told ESPN's Baxter Holmes, he is up for the challenge.

Which Young Los Angeles Laker will be the Architect of the Team’s Reconstruction?
by Bradford Evans - h4-entertainment.com

For nearly ten years, the Los Angeles Lakers have relied heavily on the presence of veterans to lead them to the promise land. Whether it has been Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, or Lamar Odom, the key players on the Lakers’ roster have had years of experience under their belts. However, with the exception of Kobe Bryant this season, the Los Angeles Lakers’ key players are all exceptionally young.

Los Angeles will have to rely on Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, and D’Angelo Russell to provide the Lakers with wins this season. The Los Angeles Lakers will begin their first steps towards rebuilding Rome this season. Clarkson, Randle, and Russell will be responsible for leading the Lakers in their version of the Reconstruction Era. However, many are curious to see which young Laker will initiate the team’s rebuild.

Why Roy Hibbert became a master of defending with verticality, and how that should help the Lakers
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

The addition of Roy Hibbert should change the identity of the Los Angeles Lakers' defense, and it's in no small part because the former All-Star has honed in on his ability to use the "verticality" rules to his advantage. That's what helped shape the Indiana Pacers into one of the best defensive teams in the NBA, and helped Hibbert take hold of his career.

Verticality is the principle that a defensive player can absorb contact without being called for a foul by going straight up, which has made a giant wall like Hibbert one of the toughest players to score against in the paint.

When did the idea of mastering the ability to protect the rim this way kick in for Hibbert? ESPN's Baxter Holmes' in-depth profile of Roy Hibbert is a great journey into the Lakers' new defensive anchor's mind, and also has a variety of fascinating stories about the big man. One of those is the moment Roy decided he wanted to take be a student of the school of verticality, which happens to trace back to the 2009 NBA Finals.

Here's a small excerpt from Holmes' profile on Hibbert, who recalled a moment during the Lakers' championship run that flipped the switch to his defensive transformation:

Roy Hibbert opens up about mental health struggles, says Ron Artest inspired him
by Sean Highkin - probasketballtalk.com

Roy Hibbert has had one of the more confusing NBA careers of the last decade. He’s been a two-time All-Star and for the first half of the 2013-14 season, looked like a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate. But other times, he’s looked lost, especially on offense. His split from the Pacers was ugly — they all but begged him to opt out of his contract and he didn’t, so they traded him to the Lakers. It’s a fresh start for Hibbert, and he’s confident he’ll be able to play with Kobe Bryant.

Hibbert also opened up to ESPN.com’s Baxter Holmes about his struggles with mental health, revealing that he’s visited a sports psychologist in the past, inspired by Ron Artest, who famously thanked his psychiatrist after the Lakers’ 2010 title.

Lakers chief joins cancer research battle, donates $1.5M to Cedars-Sinai
by Debbie L. Sklar - mynewsla.com

Los Angeles Lakers president and part owner Jeanie Buss has donated $1.5 million for Surgical Oncology Research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, it was announced Thursday.

The donation will serve to establish the Dr. Jerry H. Buss Surgical Oncology Fellowship — a tribute to her late father and close friend and family physician, Dr. Allan W. Silberman.

“Jeanie was inspired to endow the fellowship by her parents’ courageous battles with cancer,” a statement said. “Both were patients of Silberman. Her mother, JoAnn, is a cancer survivor and remains under Silberman’s care.”

Roy Hibbert vs. Roy Hibbert
by Baxter Holmes - espn.com

Roy Hibbert is sweating, the beads gathering along his brow. After a one-hour workout, Hibbert has dressed in a royal blue suit with a gray flower on his lapel to sit before a bank of cameras and about a dozen reporters at the Los Angeles Lakers' practice facility. To Hibbert's left are fellow Lakers acquisitions Lou Williams and Brandon Bass. To his right, retired jersey numbers of Lakers centers grace the wall: Mikan, Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar, O'Neal.

Just 18 months prior, Hibbert appeared on course to finish his career in the same rarefied air. He was arguably the MVP of the NBA's best team, the closest thing to a LeBron James stopper, the reason the Miami Heat had to reconfigure an offense that later won titles. He turned "rim protector" and "verticality" into catchphrases. The NBA even chose him to solo star in an "NBA Cares" commercial.

"It's tough to find guys like that, 28 years old, 7-2, that have had that kind of success," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak says proudly.

Brandon Bass looking forward to opportunity with Los Angeles Lakers
by Terrance Harris - nola.com

The day the Los Angeles Lakers introduced Brandon Bass along with two other acquisitions last month has easily been the most comical, if not impactful, moment of this offseason.

It's become customary for someone in the Los Angeles media market to ask new Lakers if they have heard from the team's star, Kobe Bryant. So when the question was presented to Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams and Bass during their combined introductory press conference, there was a long silence.

Finally, Bass broke the awkward moment with a laugh.

"We had a little crowd there and that's how I started laughing because I was looking at everybody's faces," he said. "That reporter had to know Kobe wasn't going to say nothing to the team.

"To be honest, I didn't expect him to say welcome. I just expect on the first day of training camp to be on the court with him."

Byron Scott must resist the urge to play veterans over Lakers' youth
by Anthony Irwin - silverscreenandroll.com

Trudging through last season was hard enough after Julius Randle went down with a broken leg. Matters were made even worse when Byron Scott decided he'd take it upon himself to win as many games as possible and do so with the veterans the Los Angeles Lakers had on the roster. Sure, the vast majority of those he leaned on are no longer Lakers, but who needs a long-term plan when you can win a game on a random Thursday evening against some forgettable foe by way of a Wesley Johnson jumper?

Johnson now plays for the Clippers, by the way.

This season, though, that cannot happen. Scott will have to resist the urge to stick to his old-school guns and allow the Lakers' young core of Randle, Jordan Clarkson and D'Angelo Russell the flexibility to make mistakes and learn from them on the court. This may sound like hyperbole, but how Scott treats the young guys will be the most important storyline to keep an eye on this season, and it isn't remotely close.

To a certain extent, this is why coaches can make for bad general managers. One could make the argument the two head coaches are the most competitive people partaking in a game. Why else would someone put themselves up for the ridicule that comes with making decision after decision with little to no job security? (Cut to David Blatt and his terrible "Top Gun" analogy)

Coaches are paid and desperately want to win in the moment. Why care about the franchise's future if you won't necessarily be around to see it take shape? So, when the time comes to make one of the aforementioned decisions and Scott looks down the bench at a veteran who's been there before and might better handle a pressure situation versus a rookie or sophomore who'll almost definitely screw something up, chances are, Scott's going with the vet.

He shouldn't; but he will.
