NBA scout: Lakers need to prioritize youth over veterans
by foxsports.com

Sports Illustrated recently spoke with several anonymous scouts to get the inside scoop on all 30 teams heading into the 2015-16 NBA season.

The Los Angeles Lakers are among the most intriguing teams heading into next season because of their young core of D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson. Can any of the three develop into foundational stars? Two of the three? All of them? How good can they be?

Perhaps the biggest question, however, will be just how much the trio will play.

Lakers coach Byron Scott has been known to prefer veteran players, and with the Lakers in win-now mode in theory -- despite their obvious lack of talent -- one scout worries Scott may play veterans over the young guns, which would be a mistake:

The Los Angeles Lakers Should Hang on to Metta World Peace
by Michael Pina - bleachereport.com

On Sep. 24, the Los Angeles Lakers signed Metta World Peace to a non-guaranteed contract. This was a perplexing decision; on the surface, both parties are headed in opposite directions, and it doesn’t make sense for a struggling team to take a flier on a known commodity whose prime ended seven or eight years ago.

On the other hand, World Peace has had moments throughout this preseason where he looks like someone who can actually help the Lakers win basketball games. Even at 35 years old, he’s arguably their best perimeter defender—those hands are as swift and deliberate as ever—with a relatively reliable outside shot and high basketball IQ. All of this allows head coach Byron Scott to trust World Peace when he's on the floor.

“He’s been about what I thought,” Scott said at a recent Lakers practice. “Steady. Tough. You know, one of those guys that’s gonna guard people. He brings a physical presence to the game, as well. He’s been everything that I expected.”

Lakers on hook for Jonathan Holmes' salary while he's injured
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

Rookie forward Jonathan Holmes dislocated his right shoulder Monday night in the Lakers' 104-102 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, playing just over a minute before suffering the injury.

Long-time Lakers trainer Gary Vitti tended to Holmes on the court, reseating the joint.

The Texas forward's shoulder will be immobilized for the next couple of weeks, according to a team spokesman.

Holmes is signed to a two-year, $1.4-million minimum contract, but only $100,000 of his $525,093 rookie season is guaranteed.

Under NBA rules, the Lakers will be responsible for Holmes' salary until his injury is fully healed.

His partial guarantee should cover a month's worth of games (15 or 16). His $100,000 promise will go against the team's salary cap, along with any additional charges if Holmes' recovery time proves lengthy.

Does it mean we can not cut him?
I don't think so but this rule is new to me. If somebody like Holmes ends up with a serious injury, would the team need to pay him for two years?

How will Scott measure the Lakers’ short-term and long-term interests?

MWP looks safe now that Upshaw is gone. Jabari and Holemes should also be gone soon.

Holmes can be cut, he just gets paid as long as he's injured. Counts against the cap but not as a roster spot.

Regarding the bolded....BS is only worrying about his a*s and winning games this season so he isn't let go. Not looking at our long term goals and growth for the future. We shouldn't listen to what he wants.

Jim Buss satisfied with Los Angeles Lakers’ rebuilding effort so far
by Justin Garcia - ibtimes.com.au

Los Angeles Lakers part owner Jim Buss is satisfied with what the team has done so far in their rebuilding effort to return back to prominence in the NBA. Also the team’s executive vice president, Buss also admitted that they are not yet done but that the team has already “turned the corner” in trying to get back to contention in the upcoming years.

“I think we’ve done a great job (rebuilding). Yeah, I think we’re in dynamite position. Not good position – dynamite. I think we’ve turned the corner,” The 66-year-old Lakers executive said in an interview with Sam Amick of USA Today Sports. “I don’t know if you discount that terminology, ‘turn the corner.’ But when you’re headed down the wrong road, and you can finally get off that road and turn the corner, that’s huge in my opinion.”

Lakers VP Jim Buss Confidently Explains Kobe Bryant Salary
by Rolly Gacelo - franchiseherald.com

Kobe Bryant salary is just one of the many topics experts and fans continuously discuss before the start of the 2015-2016 NBA season.
The Black Mamba signed a $48.5 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2013 after suffering from Achilles tendon tear and some think that amount is too much.

Fans and pundits alike think this is a bad move for the Purple and Gold as it gave them little chance to sign a marquee player.

For Los Angeles Lakers vice-president of basketball operations Jim Buss, Kobe Bryant's salary is more than just a payment for his services in the next two years. It is more of a reward.

"You give Kobe Bryant $50 million for two years," Buss told USA TODAY Sports when asked about Kobe's lucrative contract that will last until next year.

"Are you kidding me? What did he bring us? In this day and age, what did he bring us, for 20 years? And if that isn't what you're supposed to do, then I have no idea what life is all about."

Ryan Kelly relishing familiar role
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The stream of text messages flooded Ryan Kelly’s phone, perhaps as quickly as when he unexpectedly threw down a one-handed dunk that secured a preseason win against Portland on Monday.

“At the same time,” Kelly said, “my dad will be the first one to say, ‘That’s great. Now forget about it and do something else.’”

Kelly appears well aware on how things can turn quickly.

The Lakers re-signed him in the 2014 offseason after showing promise as a 48th overall draft pick as a so-called stretch forward with dependable outside shooting. But then Kelly missed a combined 30 games in the 2014-15 because of overlapping hamstrings.

Amid an injury-riddled roster, Lakers coach Byron Scott played Kelly at small forward, a position he never tried through four years at Duke and his NBA rookie season. In related news, Kelly averaged only 6.4 points on only 33.7 percent shooting.

“Everybody knew that’s not where I was most comfortable,” Kelly said after Tuesday’s practice at the Lakers’ facility in El Segundo. “To be thrust in that role was not easy. But I learned a lot from it. It allowed me to be a better player.”

Lakers Erred In Cutting Robert Upshaw
by George Middleton - rantsports.com

The Los Angeles Lakers don’t have established talent like most NBA teams. Instead, the Lakers have a nucleus of young talent with players like Julius Randle, D’Angelo Russell, and Jordan Clarkson. The Lakers already have a healthier Kobe Bryant returning, and they added Roy Hibbert, Louis Williams, and Brandon Bass in the offseason.

A surprise move was made on Tuesday afternoon, when the Lakers announced that they waived Robert Upshaw, along with Michael Frazier II. Waiving Frazier wasn’t a big surprise, as the Lakers are loaded with guards. The Lakers already have Clarkson, Russell, Williams, Nick Young, and potentially Jabari Brown. Yes, Frazier is the best shooter of the bunch, but he doesn’t do many other things well.

The Lakers will regret waiving Upshaw for multiple reasons. The Washington product was kicked out of the Huskies for violation of team rules. That was the second time (Fresno State), that Upshaw was kicked out for that cause in his collegiate career. This was the primary reason the talented 7-footer went undrafted. When the Lakers signed him to a non-guaranteed deal in July it appeared that he had a chance to make the team.

Larry Nance Jr. Looks Ready To Make An Impact For Los Angeles Lakers In 2015-16
by Steve Smith - rantsports.com

Being a rookie in the NBA sometimes has its moments of nervousness and anxiety attached to it. Some may even call it the “pre-show jitters”. But Larry Nance Jr. is showing not only Los Angeles Lakers fans but all NBA fans in this preseason that he seems ultimately ready and willing to make his mark on the league, while putting on a show in the meantime.

The pressure of developing into an NBA player doesn’t seem to faze Nance Jr. as he has been conducting a calm, cool and collected demeanor every time he gets on the court. He knows how good he is. He’s just ready for the opportunity to show the entire world.

As the Lakers attempt to revamp the franchise this year, Nance Jr. could become a spark plug off the bench that could ignite the offense, as well as the home crowd, in a way that the likes of Shannon Brown and Jordan Farmar used to do during their time in Los Angeles. His aggressive style and incredible leaping ability may be just what this struggling Lakers team needs.

In Defense of Lakers' Big Man Robert Sacre
by Justin Haines - lakeshowlife.com

Robert Sacre has taken quite a beating online recently. Since the news came out that the Los Angels Lakers are cutting Robert Upshaw, fans have ripped Sacre to shreds.

While these events are related, because Sacre will be occupying the roster spot fans wanted Upshaw to grab, Sacre does not deserve this treatment.

While he may not bring a ton to the court, Sacre is a great candidate for 12th man of the year. He’s never going to be the most exciting player for fans to love, but that’s a good thing.

Upshaw is surrounded by questions about his character and attitude. Sacre is a good Canadian boy who doesn’t upset anyone and just loves to cheer on his teammates. Just look at this guy!

Marcelo Huertas ‘Pretty Much’ Locked Up Roster Spot
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently finalizing their roster for the upcoming NBA regular season with two more players needing to be cut in order to get down to the maximum of 15. Although many questioned whether Marcelo Huertas would be on the final roster before he was able to get on the floor, it seems as though he’s done enough to convince head coach Byron Scott.

According to ESPN’s Baxter Holmes, Coach Scott has let it be known that Huertas will more than likely be on the final 15-man roster:

Quote:
Byron Scott said guard Marcelo Huertas has "pretty much" solidified a roster spot.

Marcelo Huertas is a natural fit with this Lakers roster
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

Marcelo Huertas followed up his six-assist debut with eight more dimes against the Portland Trail Blazers, closer to unwrapping his golden ticket to the Los Angeles Lakers' 15-man roster one pass at a time. The Lakers will need stability behind D'Angelo Russell, and Marcelo looks more than capable of stepping in as a professional who knows how to play organized basketball. Lakers head coach Byron Scott credited Huertas for taking control of the second unit following their win over Portland, and followed up on that sentiment during practice Wednesday telling media Marclo has "pretty much" solidified his spot in the rotation.

Jordan Clarkson and Lou Williams both function as players who attack with the ball in their hands, and with the current roster construction, are going to log most of their minutes as "shooting guards." Russell absolutely should absorb the majority of minutes at point guard, but the Lakers need someone who can check in and manage the offense. Huertas is perfect in this role.

Though he's never played in the NBA, what he's developed while playing internationally is transitioning without a hitch. He's a traditional point guard who'd much rather make the perfect pass than create for himself, turning into some pretty passes in his two outings. That 32-year-old Marcelo has probably made passes like this entry into the paint more times than he can count ... :

NBA Season Preview: Los Angeles Lakers
Coach’s Question:

What will be the focus behind Byron Scott’s rotation management?

It’s hard to tell which direction this Lakers' franchise is actually going. With most franchises, a collection of talent prospects like Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr, Russell and Randle (and even Black) would signal the start of a (slow developing) youth movement. But by bringing in players like Bass, Williams and Hibbert -- not to mentioning the returning Bryant -- also means there will be a push to be competitive now.

That means there is essentially two competing agendas in L.A. On one hand, Scott can choose to squeak out as many wins as possible by relying on veterans with little upside -- playing Bass, Williams and even Huertas big minutes because they are more reliable right now. Bass in particular could steal valuable developmental minutes from players like Nance and Black.

The long term play would be to simply pile up the minutes for all the young guys, letting them learn on the fly, potentially costing wins in the process. This latter scenario is certainly something that would not sit well with Bryant, the franchise icon with little time left in the game, but there’s no doubt that it would be best for the future of team. Because of this dilemma, the onus will be on Scott to manage egos and agendas carefully, hopefully finding a middle ground between the two as the season unfolds.

http://basketball.realgm.com/analysis/239593/NBA-Season-Preview-Los-Angeles-Lakers

Scott's mentality is clearly win-now.
He did say that might mean playing the young ones who might be better than the veterans. I think it means Randle, JC, Russell, but others like Nance will have difficulty getting minutes.

Julius Randle definitely makes plays for the Lakers; film, notes and more
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

If one thing seems crystal clear about watching Julius Randle, it's that his knack for playmaking is one of the most exciting things happening when he's on the court. He's averaging 2.7 assists in 20.9 minutes per game through preseason, ranking behind only D'Angelo Russell (3.2) and Marcelo Huertas (7) for the Lakers. He's throwing some flashy passes in that mix, sure, but he's also making good decisions as a facilitator.

Julius still has work to do as a player -- something he always talks about -- but playmaking seems to be something he does naturally. His mix of size, speed, strength and passing ability make him a great option to create in the offense. When Randle's drive-and-kick game is going, the Los Angeles Lakers perimeter players should be looking at open threes by the bucket.

That's why reading over an anonymous scouts' take on the Lakers, as provided by Chris Mannix, Ben Golliver and Rob Mahoney of SI.com, was interesting. Much like other unidentified officials from around the league, pessimism seemed to be the prevailing thought on where Los Angeles is. Some of it is fair, but to say Randle isn't a playmaker seems too much an oversight not to take up.

Here's the full take, via SI.com (emphasis mine):

D'Angelo Russell Will Excel In LA
by Keith Rivas - lasportshub.com

Understanding your job description before deciding to take up any offer is always an important part of a productive and responsible life.

Professional athletes are no exception.

While D’Angelo Russell didn’t have more control than he should of when it came to when he’d be selected in the 2015 NBA Draft, the fact that he was picked by the Lakers shows that the front office is ready for their next cornerstone player.

Which means they expect more than just one break out season.

Coming into his rookie campaign, Russell seems to have enough confidence to take the role of point guard by the horns.

Russell will get the nod at point guard over sensational second year stud Jordan Clarkson.

Clarkson impressed skeptics heavily with a consistent court presence throughout 2014-15.

Now that Russell is in town, it appears as though the Lakers will get to give us a preview of the league’s next dynamic duo.

While Russell gets the starting gig, it’s fair to say that Clarkson gets the role of Batman, if you were to go with a superhero comparison.

Only for the sake of dynamic duos, of course.

Lakers' veterans bringing balance of leadership, chemistry to youth
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

With roster cuts looming any day now amid a competitive training camp and preseason, it would be easy to understand if the Los Angeles Lakers' locker room was a dour place to visit, full of players not knowing if they would have a job tomorrow or come into work to see their friend's locker empty.

But the chemistry and good vibes surrounding this year's Lakers outfit were evident after a fun, back and forth game against the Portland Trail Blazers that ended with Ryan Kelly's game winning dunk. Early in the game it was Roy Hibbert rounding up the roster. The Lakers largest offseason addition, both figuratively and literally, has truly taken to his role as one of the team's leaders.

"He just stays on [the younger players]," Lakers head coach Byron Scott said of Hibbert. "He keeps talking to them, he's very positive with all of our big guys, very energetic in practice. Just a good leader, a good role model. He comes to work every day, and that's what you want to see in your veteran guys."

Whether it was in the first quarter when he pulled together the rest of the starting lineup to give defensive instructions during an official review or later on the bench when he was in the ear of Larry Nance, Jr to offer tips, Hibbert has fully embraced his role as one of the team's veteran mentors.

Kobe receives treatment for bruised leg, skips another practice
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

Kobe Bryant received treatment Wednesday for a bruised lower leg after it crept into an eighth day of bothering him.

Then he got a haircut in the media room at the Lakers' training facility, an event captured by two cameras buzzing around him for another documentary presumably produced by Bryant.

He was out the door after that, jumping into a black SUV with its motor running, while his teammates scrimmaged.

Bryant did not practice Wednesday and was "doubtful at best" to play in the Lakers' exhibition finale Thursday against Golden State, according to a team spokesman.

Jeanie Buss - Lakers organization 'devoted' to helping Lamar Odom
by Ananth Pandian - cbssports.com

Giving more perspective on the type of person Lamar Odom truly is, players like Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul have all paid visits to their former teammate during his hospitalization. The outpouring of support for Odom has been phenomenal to see as everyone is pulling for his recovery.

Odom's condition has improved since his initial hospitalization and is now recovering in a Los Angeles hospital. E! Online has reported that Odom will need "a lot" of rehab to fully recover, and according to Los Angeles Lakers team president Jeanie Buss, his former team will do whatever they can to help him through this process.

"The reports that I'm getting are so positive that he's going to make it through what was a really difficult time," said Buss about Odom on her recent appearance on the Open Run podcast (24-minute mark). "We're, and when I say we're, its the Laker organization, my family, we're devoted to helping him and however we can as he comes through this, because he is a former Laker, he is a champion with the Lakers and we all love him. To see everybody rally around him was very touching. A lot of people love him and are pulling for him."

Rookie Power Rankings: No. 1 pick not No. 1 coming out of preseason
by Ananth Pandian - cbssports.com

5. D'Angelo Russell, Los Angeles Lakers - Sporting Allen Iverson-type braids, the No. 2 overall pick has created his fair share of highlight plays in the preseason. Russell's court vision is simply amazing and helped him rack up 11 assists against Maccabi Tel Aviv B.C. in his fourth game.

Unlike Mudiay, Russell has done an excellent job of handling the ball, averaging a turnover per game. Yet besides his performance against Maccabi, the Lakers guard hasn't accumulated a lot of assists. But that should happen for Russell during the regular season once he gets more playing time and is able to figure out how to play in Byron Scott's system.

Will Metta World Peace make the Lakers’ roster?
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

Will the beginning of the Lakers’ season next week mark the end of World Peace?

The former Ron Artest, who now goes by Metta, is with his second stint with the Lakers. But it marks a stark contrast to when he arrived here in 2009 and became a key ingredient to ensure the Lakers of another NBA championship. This time, the 35-year-old World Peace has competed for one of the last roster spots along with Jabari Brown, a scoring guard with more upside.

But World Peace continuously stressed his uncertain future is “not my concern,” even if he won’t answer whether he will continue his 15-year NBA career after playing overseas in the last two years. Instead, World Peace resorted to a comedy routine that has often made him a favorite among media members.

“I like working hard. That’s what I like to do,” he said, before looking at a handful of reporters on Wednesday. “You like to wear nice dresses. I don’t know what designer that is, but it’s nice. [Pause.] That’s a nice shirt, Armani Exchange. [Pause.] Yours, not so nice.”

World Peace’s presence with the Lakers goes beyond delivering colorful sound bites.

Lakers Vs. Warriors Preview: L.A. Looks To End Preseason With Win
by Maximo Gonzales - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers have certainly got it going as of late, winning consecutive games and increasing their record to 3-4 as they head into the Honda Center for their preseason finale versus the Golden State Warriors.

The last time these two teams met, the Lakers prevailed with an 85-70 victory over the defending champs. However, the game was cut short due to unsafe court conditions. The Lakers then escaped with a victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, thanks to a clutch game-winning dunk by Ryan Kelly, after the Lakers had just given up a five-point lead with 17 seconds left on the clock. Marcelo Huertas dazzled in his Laker debut, as he displayed his tremendous playmaking ability, recording eight points and eight assist in 19 minutes.
