Lakers still seek first win after loss to Denver Nuggets, 120-109
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

The Lakers woes continued on Tuesday night, as the team lost its fourth-straight game to start the season, falling 120-109 to a short-handed Denver Nuggets squad.

Despite playing without injured players Wilson Chandler, Jusuf Nurkic, Joffrey Lauvergne and Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets overcome an early 10-point deficit to win their second game in four tries.

Kenneth Faried, Denver's 6-foot-8 center, was too much for the Lakers to handle, leading his team with 28 points on 10 of 13 shooting, along with a game-high 15 rebounds.

Danilo Gallinari, who at 6-foot-10 was the tallest available Nugget, scored 21 points with eight rebounds.

The Lakers got 30 points from Jordan Clarkson on 12 of 19 shooting, tying his career high, but the Lakers' defense was porous all night, giving up 93 points through the first three periods.

Emmanuel Mudiay, taken seventh overall in the NBA draft by Denver, won the first head-to-head matchup against the Lakers' second overall pick D'Angelo Russell.

Mudiay finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points with 10 assists, although he missed 10 of 13 shots and turned the ball over six times.

Lakers can't hold off Nuggets, fall to 0-4
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

The fact that one team trusted its rookie point guard to close out a close game is fodder for another day.

The matchup between D’Angelo Russell and Emmanuel Mudiay ended up taking a backseat to an entertaining, if futile, Lakers' pursuit of their first win of the season.

The Lakers (0-4) lost 120-109 in what was already one of the most interesting games of the season before it even began, thanks to Byron Scott’s assertion that during pre-draft workouts he didn’t see Mudiay as “a true point guard.”

Scott did his best to throw water on those statements before the game, saying, “It’s the Lakers and Nuggets. It’s not a Mudiay and Russell matchup.”

In the end it was a Kenneth Faried and Jordan Clarkson matchup.

It certainly wasn’t Kobe Bryant, who after skipping Monday’s practice at Scott’s behest – to clear his mind – was beset by early foul trouble and shot just 4-of-11 from the field, and 1-of-5 on 3-pointers, to finish with 11 points.

The Nuggets (2-2) relied on Faried’s 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Clarkson carried the Lakers with 30 points, missing a free throw with 1:14 left that would have given him a career high.

As it was, he matched his previous career best, which he set March 24 against Oklahoma City.

In the first quarter, Clarkson scored 14 of the Lakers' 36 points, their most in any quarter.

But the Lakers had little answer for the interior presence of Faried.

Emmanuel Mudiay takes a shot at Byron Scott after beating the Lakers
by foxsports.com

Following the Denver Nuggets' 120-109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, Nuggets rookie Emmanuel Mudiay decided to take a shot at Lakers coach Byron Scott, who openly questioned Mudiay's decision-making and point guard skills prior to the matchup.

Emmanuel Mudiay, after collecting 10 assists tonight: "Thank you Byron Scott for saying I'm not a point guard." #Nuggets

Lakers vs. Nuggets: Recap, Grades and Stock Watch
by Anthony Yassa - lakeshowlife.com

The Lakers took the floor attempting to earn their first win of the season tonight against the Denver Nuggets.

This game featured a matchup between D’Angelo Russell and one of the other premier point guards from the draft, Emmanuel Mudiay.

The game would also feature Julius Randle, as he attempted to follow up his impressive performance against the Dallas Mavericks.

How Byron Scott Is Failing the Team
by Eric Yee - lakeshowlife.com

The Lakers are currently winless, and Lakers fans are, rightfully so, getting more and more restless by the second.

Though fans will cite his lack of coaching involvement — missed timeouts, blown substitutions, lack of an established offensive system, etc. — what will ultimately be Byron Scott‘s downfall is something that has not gotten much attention, his relationship with Kobe Bryant.

Even casual fans know that when Bryant entered the league in 1996, Scott was the Lakers’ veteran point guard. This goes to say that the duo share a personal bond that clouds judgment and makes effective coaching extremely difficult. Three games into his 20th NBA season and it’s obvious that the Lakers would have benefited greatly by having a coach who wasn’t afraid to tell Kobe how it is.

For lack of a better example, it’s similar to a father coaching his son’s team and wanting his son to succeed at all costs, often to the team’s detriment. But in this case, the son is a 37 year old, 20 year NBA veteran, who has yet to accept that he’s past his prime and gambles way too much on defense.

Kevin Ding may have put it best in his recent article:

One, coach Byron Scott is far too regimented about sticking with his preplanned rotation. He subbed out Julius Randle in the first half and D’Angelo Russell in the second half when they were clearly rolling Sunday night. But when Bryant is playing poorly and taking bad shots, Scott wouldn’t dream of pulling Bryant to send him a message stressing the need to play the right way.

Two, Scott has proved to be the biggest Kobe fanboy in an organization with many of them—and that’s unfortunate, because Bryant needs real help more than ever.

Bryant needs to be put in positions to succeed and limited to those positions—at least until he has something from which to build.

D'Angelo Russell frustrated by lack of playing time in the clutch
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

D'Angelo Russell has been watching the NBA his entire life. He's here to play in it.

When Russell picked up his fourth foul midway through the third quarter Tuesday, few people, least among them the No. 2 overall draft pick, would have guessed that would be the end of his night.

Yet, for the final 17 minutes, 24 seconds of the Lakers' 120-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets, Russell sat there. He watched; he listened as Metta World Peace offered insight and stressed the importance of making defensive stands.

And he grew more and more frustrated.

After all, the game marked his first matchup with the league’s other top point guard, Emmanuel Mudiay.

Following the loss, there was no hiding Russell’s disappointment over his reduced role in the second half.

Asked what he needs to get on the floor late in games, Russell said, “I have no idea.”

How frustrated was he?

“Something I got to deal with,” he said.

It didn’t help Russell’s case to play that the Lakers’ top performer in the fourth quarter was his replacement, Lou Williams. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year scored 14 of his 24 points in the period, including 10 points on free throws.

“If Lou wasn’t playing the way he was playing, I would have brought (Russell) back in,” Lakers coach Byron Scott said.

Against a team that took them to seven games in the Western Conference Semifinals the year before, Kobe Bryant was the engine behind the defending-champion Lakers’ overtime victory over Houston.

Bryant erupted for 41 points — including 16 in the fourth quarter and overtime — while going 15-of-30 from the field and collecting six rebounds and four assists. He also had four steals to key L.A.’s 19-9 turnover advantage.

Glad that he is starting to get PO that he is not playing and will start playing with a chip on his shoulder

On the other hand, few would have faulted Byron's decision to have DLO go in for either Lou or Clarkson - who were both playing far better than he was last night

I have said it all along, Kobe needs a coach who does not care about his BS. Byron for this reason is the WRONG coach for this team, as long as Kobe is playing. Why can't the Laker brass see this? Why do fans have to suffer like this? Night in and out we suffer watching our team get demolished by has been like Dirk and puppies like Mudiay!!!! Being a Lakers fans the past 4 years has been difficult!!!! Last year we were tanking, WTF we doing this year?

The Kobe we knew isn't coming back
by Jeff Miller - ocregister.com

The answer for Kobe Bryant always could be found on the court, in the gym, somewhere among the descending beads of sweat.

When in doubt, work it out, the legend of Bryant built on his famous early-morning training sessions and tireless commitment that then would burn throughout the rest of the day.

On Monday, just three games – three games – into his 20th NBA season, Bryant was told to do something that for him, not long ago, would have been pure blasphemy. He was told to stay far away from basketball, in an attempt to clear his mind.

After watching each of Bryant’s past three go-rounds end in injury, the Lakers, not even one week into the new season, are now concerned with Kobe’s mental health, too.

And so continues the most interesting story currently unfolding in the NBA, the story of a notoriously competitive and stubborn aging icon desperately trying to go out on his terms, even as his own honed body and celebrated physical skills fight him.

Bryant, whose offensive production in recent seasons increasingly has been mocked by basketball’s advanced metrics, is 37 and struggling to shoot at a percentage equal to his age.

He returned to the court Tuesday night at Staples Center, hitting nothing but net on his first shot attempt against Denver and barely anything at all on his next two, Bryant wiping his right hand on his jersey after the latter try – an air-ball – as if all this could be fixed with a clean palm.

He eventually finished 4 for 11 – his final shot was an air-ball, too – on a night when the Lakers didn’t play enough defense to avoid a 120-109 loss and 0-4 start.

By now, most athletes would have accepted their mortality and its limitations, not exactly comfortable with what they’d become but understanding of the inevitability of it all. Bryant, of course, never has been most athletes.

Lakers players in verbal spat late in Tuesday’s loss
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

For anyone hoping to see some fight from the Lakers in their latest loss, it was there. Just not on the court.

Late in the Lakers’ 120-109 loss to Denver on Tuesday, a few players were involved in a verbal spat on the team bench, Coach Byron Scott said Wednesday.

“We were losing the game and guys weren’t happy,” Scott said. “So a few guys discussed it in a very angry way. If they just sat on the bench and discussed it with a smile on their face, I would have been much more concerned.”

Earlier this season, Scott praised the Lakers for their chemistry, making it through a month of training camp without any scuffles or scrapes in practice. After an 0-4 start, however, Scott was happy to see some fire.

“We’re tired and don’t want to lose, man,” second-year forward Julius Randle said. “Just competitive. That’s how it is. We got guys in here that care, so it’s going to happen.”

He declined to say which players argued, but that Kobe Bryant, perhaps to the surprise of some, wasn’t involved.

“I liked the edge that they got,” Scott said. “These guys are like brothers. Once this game is over and everybody wakes up the next day, you forget about it and you get back to work. They’ll probably beat each other up out here then go out to lunch.”

No one is happy with the Lakers’ start.

After Tuesday’s loss, Bryant was asked how fans should respond to the four losses.

“Freak out,” he said. “It’s good for the soul.”

Defense, Intensity Talk of Practice
by Joey Ramirez - nba.com

With the Denver Nuggets hitting 120 points in their Tuesday-night win over the Lakers, L.A. head coach Byron Scott was offered a reminder of how far his defense still has to go.

Scott has preached defense above all else since his first day as Lakers coach, but results have not followed in the first four games of the season, as L.A. ranks last in points allowed (116.8) and turnovers forced (11.8).

But Scott did see a positive sign toward the end of the fourth quarter on Tuesday when some Lakers, whom he didn’t name, jawed at each other regarding the team’s poor play.

“We had a little bit of an altercation last night, which was good,” Scott said at Wednesday’s practice. “That tells me that they care. I want to see more fight in our guys. We want to try to stop the bleeding as soon as possible.”

Scott said that he “loved” seeing his players react that way instead of being satisfied with the loss.

“A few guys kind of discussed it in an angry way,” he said. “If they had just sat on the bench with a smile on their face, I would be much more concerned.”

Kobe blames the Lakers' dismal start on the team's lack of experience
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

The Lakers — who fell to 0-4 after losing Tuesday to the Denver Nuggets — are a defensive mess this season. They are scoring points, but getting stops has been problematic.

The team lacks experience, relying on young players like D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson.

"At some point, we can't just use our youth and inexperience as an excuse," said Lou Williams after Tuesday's loss at the Staples Center. "We just have to go out there and compete and try to win games."

The Lakers are trying, according to Coach Byron Scott, but the desire to compete isn't the issue. They have yielded 116.8 points a game while scoring only 106.8.

"Most of it's not effort. It really isn't. I think our guys are giving a great effort," Scott said. "Most of it is just knowing where you're supposed to be at the right time, in the right place."

Kobe Bryant gave a more detailed example, after Kenneth Faried scored 28 points on 10 of 13 shots to lead the Nuggets past the Lakers.

"It's just basic stuff. They ran a top screen and roll, for example, and we allowed the big to roll on the single side," Bryant said. "[It's lack of] experience. You can see the action, you make the big roll to the crowded side, so now Faried is rolling to a congested area.

"And those are all just little details. That's not something you recognize before; you see the action taking place, and then you make the adjustments right then and there. That's just experience."

Bryant's point is that there's only so much that can be coached. At some point, players become experienced enough to make defensive reads based on what the opposing offense is running.

Mudiay should have said that even if his decision making is bad, it is still way better than that of Scott.

Which is really sad, though.

The thing is. We want it to be a long season. We want it to extend beyond 82 games... and we see that this is again not going to happen.
And not JUST because it is tough. But because this team is obviously underachieving.

D'Angelo Russell Hits Rough Patch
by Keith Rivas - lasportshub.com

D’Angelo Russell seemed as if he was ready to learn the hard way, but getting benched versus the Nuggets is never a good look — not for a rookie trying to make a name for himself.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced that moment in life where things come together to create a heck of a mess and we’re stuck in the middle of it trying to crawl our way out.

Lakers rookie D’Angelo Russell isn’t in the worst of positions this early in the season by any means, but with the way that things are going so far for the point guard, you’d have to imagine things need to change soon.

Russell only looked good on defense when compared to his direct opportunities to face Emmanuel Mudiay, and it got to the point where Byron Scott had had enough.

But did the Lakers faithful really agree with him on the call?

Per comments first reported by ESPN and then echoed by Bleacher Report, Byron Scott seemed to put the emphasis on balance and nothing else.

Lou Williams has been productive so far in his days and games with the Lakers, but even then, it’s fairly obvious that throwing him in for a good part of the game over your most recent draft pick shows a lack of confidence.

And it also shows, even if unintentional and indirectly, where your heart is.

Byron Scott: Player development is secondary to winning for Lakers
by foxsports.com

Things continue to go poorly for the Los Angeles Lakers. The team is dangerously close to matching last year's mark of five consecutive losses to start the season, and the franchise record of seven straight opening losses is well within reach. In a nutshell, it'd be nice if the Lakers could get a win.

And that's coach Byron Scott's focus, even if it means cutting playing time short for the Lakers' young guys. As he told reporters at practice on Wednesday, his goal is to win games first, with development of younger players a "secondary" consideration:

“That is the reality,” Scott said. “But the second part of that goal is you’ve still got to develop the young core of guys that you have. That’s my job, to try to win basketball games and in the meantime try to develop young people."

He added, "I’m not always thinking about necessarily developing them. I’m always thinking about trying to win. I’m always thinking about trying to win. The development part comes secondary to that, but in practice and everything is where you really work on the development part."

Developing Youth and Winning Are Not Mutually Exclusive
by Eric Yee - lakeshowlife.com

Of all the flaws coach Byron Scott has demonstrated, the one that should really grind fans’ gears is his belief that developing the young Lakers and winning games are mutually exclusive.

In a recent ESPN interview, after Tuesday night’s loss to the Denver Nuggets, Byron Scott said a variety of things which should concern fans. The first being that winning games comes first and the development of young players comes second.

I’m not always thinking about necessarily developing them. I’m always thinking about trying to win. I’m always thinking about trying to win. The development part comes secondary to that, but in practice and everything is where you really work on the development part

Scott went on to say, “That’s my job, to try to win basketball games and in the meantime try to develop young people.”

This is frightening for many reasons, including the idea that, if Byron Scott is really trying to win these games, the Lakers are in serious trouble.

Next, if Scott thinks that practice — “not a game, not a game, not a game, we talkin’ ’bout practice” — is really where you, “work on the development part,” then problems are more serious than imagined.

1-on-1 with Roy Hibbert
by Mike Trudell - nba.com

While in Hawaii for training camp, Lakers Reporter Mike Trudell sat down with four Lakers players to talk a bit about basketball, and a bit about what those players have been up to off the court.

Highlights of the interviews, which aired on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, will appear over the next few days, continuing with Roy Hibbert:

We need tom thibodou

That would be the best move that the Lakers could possibly make at this point, both to win now and to develop the young core players. Thibs would bring a defensive approach to the game that Scott lacks. I know Scott is supposed to be a defensive minded coach but he's far from it. Hibbert for starters is in his prime and he's not getting much over 20 minutes per game. He's also one of the best if not the best rim protectors in the game. Kobe can still be a good defender if he's being asked to focus on it. Russell more than any other player needs a coach to focus on defense and demand it of him now while he's young and he has a very long way to go to become an acceptable defensive player in this league.
