Lakers' Week 2 in review: Lakers get a win, but just one

by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

The Lakers on Friday finally got their first win of the season, defeating the Nets in Brooklyn, 104-98.

After finishing Week 1 with a 103-93 loss to the Dallas Mavericks and a three-game losing streak, all-star guard Kobe Bryant was given a day off by Coach Byron Scott to clear his head.

Bryant's farewell tour is off to a bad start, most notably with a poor shooting percentage.

Rookie forward Larry Nance Jr. suffered a broken nose in practice but wasn't forced to miss any time. Veteran forward Metta World Peace said he had no problem with his initial lack of playing time.

On Tuesday, the Lakers fell to a depleted Denver Nuggets squad, 120-109 -- despite Jordan Clarkson tying his career high of 30 points.

Four straight losses had the team frustrated. Bryant pointed to the team's lack of experience as part of the problem.

With an 0-4 record, the Lakers hit the road for five games, still searching for their first win. Fans aren't exactly thrilled with the Lakers' performance.

Scott warned that rookie guard D'Angelo Russell needs to improve, lest he face reduced playing time.

Russell responded with a career-high 16 points in the team's win over the Nets.

The Lakers failed to build a winning streak, falling on Sunday to the New York Knicks, 99-95 -- in what seemed like Bryant's farewell to Madison Square Garden.

TDIKH: November 9, 1997
by nba.com

Coming off the bench against Golden State, Kobe Bryant notched the very first of 679 25-point games in his career, as the Lakers rolled the Warriors, 132-97, at the Forum.

Bryant tallied five assists and three steals, but it was a group effort that propelled L.A. to victory.

Shaquille O’Neal amassed 27 points and 19 rebounds, while Rick Fox added 22 points. The Lakers shot 49-of-91 (53.8 percent) — hitting eight more shots than Golden State on 13 fewer attempts.

The purple and gold also had significant advantages in rebounds (54-44) and made free throws (27-14), which keyed their fourth straight win to start the season.

As for Bryant, who shot 11-of-18, it was his first significant scoring effort against the Warriors, against whom he averages 27.9 points in his career — more than any other team.

Derek Fisher: Kobe Bryant 'trying to fit' into Lakers
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Few have had as intimate a view of Kobe Bryant’s quest to succeed as Derek Fisher. They entered the league together in 1996 and won five championships.

Nineteen years later, Fisher has moved to the sideline, a distinguished thatch of white in his robust beard. Meanwhile, Bryant is still playing, leading the Lakers against Fisher’s Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

Bryant’s championship days are almost certainly behind him, and yet he remains on the court. Fisher said Bryant is now chasing a different kind of success.

“What I’ve seen so far (this season) is all I’ve wanted for him the last couple years,” Fisher said. “He’s healthy, he’s moving well, he looks engaged, he looks like he’s valuing and respecting what his teammates can and can’t do and trying to fit into that.”

Fisher did not get to see all of Bryant’s 18-point performance on Sunday. He was ejected with 7:04 remaining in the third quarter disputing a foul called against Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis while Bryant attempted a 3-pointer.

Earlier this season, Fisher and former Lakers coach Phil Jackson, the Knicks president, said they believed Bryant would play beyond this season, although Bryant has repeatedly said he is leaning toward retiring.

“I just felt like if he’s healthy and he enjoys this year, why wouldn’t he?” Fisher said. “Not because I know anything that you guys (reporters) don’t know. I haven’t had any conversations with him specifically about it. He loves the game, he loves to work at it. I could be wrong, though, he may feel like this is it.”

Kobe Bryant Wants To Be Remembered As A ‘Talented Overachiever’
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

Kobe Bryant’s career in the NBA is coming to an end. Bryant may be playing in his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers and potentially played his last game at Madison Square Garden on Sunday against the New York Knicks.

Following the loss to the Knicks, Bryant was asked about his legacy and how he’d like to be remembered once he finally walks away from the game. Kobe answered with three words, via Shahan Ahmed of NBC Los Angeles.

"Talented over achiever" - Kobe Bryant when asked what he wants his legacy to be after he hangs it up for good.

Julius Randle is own worst critic on performance against Knicks
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

The New York Knicks were privately worried about Julius Randle, thinking they didn't have anybody who could stop his bull-in-a-china-shop style of play.

They didn't have to be concerned Sunday, it turned out.

Randle had a rough day, scoring six points on three-for-12 shooting as the Lakers lost to the Knicks, 99-95.

In a telling sign of accountabiltiy, the biggest critic of the young power forward was none other than Julius Randle.

"I made some bone-headed plays down the stretch," he said quietly while sitting at his locker.

He took an ill-advised step-back three-point shot with 2 minutes 24 seconds to play and the Lakers ahead by one point. That was bad, no doubt, for a player who hadn't taken one all season.

"That was, to me, a little bit of a mental lapse," Coach Byron Scott said. "But I thought he played OK."

Randle was also unhappy about the foul he committed on Kristaps Porzingis after the Knicks rookie took a rebound with 1:20 to play. Porzingis made both free throws to give the Knicks a six-point lead.

"It was unnecessary," Randle said.

Lakers Front Office Continue Their Questionable Decision Making
by Anthony Yassa - lakeshowlife.com

Despite notching their first win of the season Friday night, the Lakers front office continues to make questionable decisions.

The Lakers opened the season with four straight losses, none of which have come against teams expected to make the playoffs in this year’s tough Western Conference. However, the fact that the Lakers are losing to mediocre teams is not the most troubling thing about the beginning of the Lakers season.

Through the team’s first three games, Byron Scott stuck with a rigid rotation, which fared rather poorly. The interesting thing about this is, for a team supposedly devoting itself to a youth movement, there was shockingly little actual youth in the rotation.

In Byron Scott’s set rotation for the first three games, the Lakers played ten players in meaningful minutes. Of these ten players, only three were first or second year players. Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, and D’Angelo Russell were the only three young players to get real NBA minutes in the Lakers first games. The rest of the players were veterans, players like Kobe Bryant, Brandon Bass, and Nick Young, none who can be considered long-term Lakers’ assets.

The Lakers should be devoting this year to collecting players who could have a long-term impact on the organization, rather than once again favoring current production over future assets.

The Lakers are in desperate need of assets, with this year’s first round pick most likely heading to the Philadelphia 76ers, and few tradable players that the Lakers would be willing to part with.

However, in this preseason the Lakers acted as if they were a team on the verge of contention, who could be affected by the smallest drop in production caused by younger players. This mindset led to players like Robert Upshaw, a lottery talent with personal struggles, being cut in favor of Robert Sacre, a mediocre big with virtually no potential for future improvement.

Another example of the Lakers throwing away assets was the release of Jabari Brown, an undrafted player who had played quite well for the Lakers at the end of last season. The Lakers opted to cut Jabari Brown over Metta World Peace and Robert Sacre. To make matters worse, the Lakers were unable to even secure him for their D-League team, as Brown has opted to play overseas.

These decisions would be perfectly acceptable for a team like the Spurs, who can legitimately say they are trying to win now. Players like Sacre and World Peace definitely have value to a team like that, who could need them to play important spot minutes.

However, for the Lakers, it makes little sense to cut young players and keep veterans.

Lakers must build more than just a shrine for Kobe this season
by Ken Berger - cbssports.com

The receiving line began with Carmelo Anthony at the final horn and didn't end until 6:58 p.m. ET on Sunday, when Kobe Bryant stepped into the freight elevator on the 33rd Street end of Madison Square Garden -- almost certainly for the last time.

Inside, Kobe embraced Ron Harper, a championship teammate to both Bryant and his muse, Michael Jordan. The doors to the wide chasm closed -- vertically, like the slateboard clapper of a movie director. And in truth, it is difficult to separate Bryant's reality from reality TV on what is presumed to be his final lap around the NBA at age 37, incomprehensively in his 20th season. Inside the elevator with him, as with virtually his every step, word and gesture, was a documentary film crew -- camera rolling and boom-mic hovering above his bald head.

Bryant continues to insist he doesn't want a farewell tour, but that's what this final season of his Lakers contract has become. That's sure what it felt like on Sunday, in Bryant's favorite road arena: good-bye.

In the building where he's had so many memorable moments, all that Bryant left in his wake this time was another numbing Lakers loss, not to mention 13 misses among his 19 shots. It was a far cry from the 61 points he amassed here in 2009, the Garden record for a visiting player.

"I don't think you understand how much I watched this building growing up," Bryant said outside the visiting locker room.

But the Lakers, the glamour team from Hollywood that had for so many years invaded Gotham like royalty, are just another bad basketball team now. They fell to 1-5 on Sunday with a 99-95 loss to Anthony's Knicks, on their way to a season that threatens to build nothing except a shrine to Bryant's brilliant career.

"I think we're figuring some things out, honestly," Bryant said.

Before and after the game, Bryant proved to still be an expert at navigating the Garden's nooks and crannies, his voice still resonating in its corridors with the platitudes of yesteryear. It was the 48 minutes in between that presented the problem. With building blocks DeAngelo Russell and Julius Randle waiting their turn, the Lakers' swing through New York -- a victory over the Nets on Friday and this loss to the Knicks -- became a 1-on-1, low-post dance for old time's sake.

"The biggest sign of respect to me would be to approach it just like it was any other game and try to kick our butts," Bryant had said over the weekend.

On most nights for these Lakers, that shouldn't be a problem.

Anthony, one of Bryant's closest friends, dutifully played his role. The two friends and founding members of the Mutual Isolation Society battled ferociously for position at both ends while 19,812 (plus the other eight participants) watched. It was at once the show of respect from Anthony that Bryant craved and also a gratuitous diversion.

And if Bryant isn't careful, that's what his swan song is going to become -- a sad ode to his diminished gifts and unmatched drive, instead of the dignified tribute he deserves.

"I try to just honor everything I've been doing throughout my career," he said.

Amid the Points and Applause, One Single Shot Ignited Love Story of Kobe, NYC
by Howard Beck - bleacherreport.com

The farewell came Sunday at 5:59 p.m ET, with hugs and smiles, a stirring ovation and one final wave—an NBA legend and a legendary arena sharing a last embrace.

Kobe Bryant raised his left palm to meet the gentle cheers, then disappeared into a Madison Square Garden tunnel.

This was almost certainly goodbye, even if Bryant, at age 37 and in his 20th year of professional basketball, isn't quite ready to say so. This was almost certainly the last chapter in a most unique basketball romance.

Kobe Bryant never played for New York, but New York has long adored Kobe Bryant—cheered him, embraced him like a favored son, even as he diced up New York's team and stamped his name in New York's record books.

Knicks fans could boo the Los Angeles Lakers and cheer for the Lakers' star in the same breath, contradictions be dammed. Bryant always returned the love, always proclaimed his adoration for the place he called "the Mecca of basketball."

So it was again Sunday, with the Lakers making their only visit of the season, and the Knicks pulling out a 99-95 victory in front of an audience that included Magic Johnson, Tracy Morgan and Spike Lee.

There will be more road games in the weeks and months ahead, more farewells along the way, more moments of sentiment and admiration. But none like this.

To understand the intensity of the goodbye, you have to understand the hello. You have to see The Reverse Dunk.

Jordan Clarkson Has Quietly Become Lakers' Best Player
by Anthony Yassa - lakeshowlife.com

The Lakers have changed in many ways entering the 2015 season, but one change is more shocking than any other, Kobe Bryant is no longer the Lakers best player. Not only has Kobe lost that title, but he has lost it to the unlikeliest of challengers. Jordan Clarkson, a second-year player who was selected with the 46th pick in the draft, has established himself as the Lakers best player by a wide margin this year.

Jordan Clarkson impressed Laker fans as soon as he appeared on the scene. With impressive athleticism and aggression, it was clear that the second round pick had promise, but the speed and height of his ascent was predicted by no one. His rookie season ended with a rookie first-team honor, which has cemented himself a place in the Lakers future plans.

Not only did Clarkson impress with his consistent play, but he won over fans with some truly incredible highlights. Demonstrating elite speed and explosiveness, Clarkson had multiple highlight dunks and layups in his rookie year.

Surprise! Kobe Bryant plans to play back-to-backs
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

The cheers from the fans of opposing teams, the extra-long hugs with longtime adversaries. Bryant is soaking it all up. He knows each Eastern Conference stop could mark his final appearance in arenas he’s played in throughout his career.

On Friday it was Brooklyn, Sunday New York’s Madison Square Garden, Tuesday it’s Miami and so on.

The “so on” is important, because at some point, logic says Bryant has to rest. Lakers coach Byron Scott said last week his hope was Bryant could stay healthy and play in 60-some games.

On Sunday, Scott revealed Bryant has a different number in mind: All 82.

The first back-to-back of the season, Tuesday and Wednesday in Miami and Orlando, figured to be instructive. It’s a matter Scott has said he and Bryant still needed to discuss.

For now, Scott said Bryant will play legs of the back-to-back.

“I expect him to start on both days,” he said, “but minute-wise we’ll just see how he feels as far as if he’s going to continue to play the same amount of minutes he’s playing right now.”

On Sunday, Bryant logged 32 minutes in a 99-95 loss to the Knicks, finishing with 18 points on 6-of-19 shooting.

“He really wants to try to play every single game,” Scott said. “He really does. I know the type of warrior he is and I know there’s going to be some games he’s not going to play, even though that’s his mindset.

“But right now this early in the season we’re just going to go with the flow and see how it is.”

The Lakers have 17 back-to-back sets this season.

What's Really to Blame for the Los Angeles Lakers' Embarrassing Defense?
by Michael Pina - bleacherreport.com

After a recent loss against the Denver Nuggets, in which innumerable defensive blunders led to a steady rush of baskets for the opposition—120 points is a lot of points—Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott generalized his team’s calamitous performance with a slew of demoralizing truisms.

“We have to figure out a way to play extremely hard and extremely well on the defensive end,” he said. “Not miss assignments and play together as a team for 48 minutes. We have flashes of doing all the things the right way but sometimes when you do it the right way, teams are gonna score.”

A few moments later, Scott pivoted in an attempt to identify the problems that still plague his team.

“Most of it’s not effort. It really isn’t. I think our guys are giving a great effort. Most of it is just, knowing where you’re supposed to be at the right time and the right place. Anticipation is big in defense because you don’t have to be the smartest or fastest, but you have to anticipate where the ball is going. Where the next play is going. Where your man is going. The ball, you’ve got to be on a string every time. When the ball moves, you have to move.”

He concluded with a sincere observation that contradicts the very words he spoke not even two minutes prior: “Sometimes our guys just relax. That’s what young people do. We’re just going to keep pushing at it, working at it. It’s going to take us some time, but we’re going to get it.”

It's obviously bad news when a head coach scratches his head this long in a single press conference, but nothing Scott said was incorrect.

D'Angelo Russell Should be Closing Out Games For LA
by Justin Haines - lakeshowlife.com

Most Lakers fans know by now that Byron Scott has been benching D’Angelo Russell at the end of games for Lou Williams, in an effort to win.

Most people are upset (and rightly so) because this is costing Russell valuable experience that could help him develop his NBA game. The thinking goes, Russell needs more experience in these situations to be good enough to play in these situations, a vicious circle.

Looking at the numbers, both basic and advanced, provides a problem with the thought that Williams is an improvement over Russell.

Focusing on the last two games for the Los Angeles Lakers, there’s a good argument that Russell would have provided more in the closing minutes.

Look at the Lakers 104-98 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Russell was 6-of-9 for 16 points, including two of three from behind the arc, before getting benched by Scott so that Williams could enter the game. It’s worth noting that Williams ended the game 2-of-9. Taking the same number of shots, Russell was significantly more efficient. No advanced numbers needed.

Kobe sits with sore back as Lakers fall to Heat
by Janis Carr - ocregister.com

Kobe Bryant said he wanted to play every game this season, in every city just in case this is his final year. You can cross Miami off that list.

Bryant sat out Tuesday’s game with a sore back, depriving Heat fans of what might have been their final chance to see the 17-time All Star play in American Airlines Arena.

“I had trouble walking,” Bryant said on Time Warner Cable Sportsnet, adding he didn’t think it was serious and he could resolve it with rest and treatment. “It’s been that way for three years,” he said.

Instead, the fans got 48 minutes of Nick Young on one end, Hassan Whiteside on the other and a whole lot of 3-pointers and Metta World Peace in the middle. What the Lakers didn’t get was a victory.

Whiteside and Chris Bosh combined for 49 points in a 101-88 Heat victory. Bosh led the Heat with 30 points and 11 rebounds, and Whiteside scored 19 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.

World Peace was an unexpected fill-in for Bryant and the veteran didn’t disappoint in his first start of the season. He matched Young’s 3-pointer shooting, going 4 for 4 and finishing with 14 points.

World Peace has quickly proven his worth to this young Lakers squad as few thought he would even make the roster when he signed. Inactive at the start of the season, Scott brought him off the bench in the previous two games and impressed the coach enough to start.

Lakers fall to Heat, 101-88, as Bryant rests
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

Kobe Bryant took the night off to rest and the Lakers lost their second in a row, falling to the Heat in Miami, 101-88.

Bryant was a late scratch by the team, choosing to rest a score back, instead of playing him on two straight nights. The Lakers (1-6) play in Orlando against the Magic (3-5) on Wednesday.

Despite playing without their veteran All-Star, the Lakers kept close to the Heat throughout the first half before falling behind late in the third. Chris Bosh took over, finishing with 30 points and 11 rebounds, to help his team coast through the fourth period with their second-straight victory.

The Lakers also were dominated by center Hassan Whiteside, who notched a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds with three blocked shots. Luol Deng added 14 points while Dwyane Wade scored 12.

The outside shooting of Nick Young and Metta World Peace helped the Lakers remain competitive in Miami. Young scored a team-high 17 points while hitting five of his nine three-point attempts. World Peace added 14 points on a perfect four for four from outside.

Byron Scott Didn’t Consider Playing D’Angelo Russell Late Against Heat
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott has been criticized quite a bit as of late for his usage of rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell. That criticism is bound to kick into high gear once again after the loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday night with Russell not playing a minute in the fourth quarter.

After the loss to the Heat, Coach Scott talked about not playing Russell in the fourth on TWCSportsNet. Scott said Russell didn’t get back in the game because Miami’s lead was too big, via Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters.

Recently, Scott has said that he values winning over developing the young players on the squad. Although the Lakers are clearly rebuilding, Scott doesn’t want to sacrifice a chance to win in order to test players like Russell late in games.

Scott’s philosophy has left many confused about his intentions with Russell. Not playing the rookie in garbage time is a questionable move to say the least and at times it seems to leave the rookie wondering where he fits on this team.

D’Angelo Russell fighting frustration amid fourth-quarter absences
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

Through all the hiccups accompanying his rookie season, Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell has stomached something far more frustrating than adapting to the NBA. The most trying times have happened when he has sat on the bench.

Russell did not play in the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ 101-88 loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday at American Airlines Arena, marking the third time in only six games this has happened for the team’s top draft pick and No. 2 choice overall. The Lakers (1-6) have lost all of those games.

“I got to figure out what I’m doing wrong,” said Russell, who posted four points on 2-of-6 shooting, four rebounds, four assists and two turnovers in 21 minutes. “So I can correct it.”

Did Lakers coach Byron Scott offer any feedback?

Said Russell: “No.”

Scott has favored 10-year NBA veteran Lou Williams, who posted 14 points on 3-of-11 shooting in 26 minutes off the bench against the Heat (5-3). But Scott did not explain Russell’s fourth-quarter absence amid a double-digit deficit.

“I didn’t really think about bringing him back at that time,” Scott said.

That left Russell with his own theory.

“I got to get better on each read,” Russell said. “I try to force it, getting the ball to guys.”

Luke Walton Would Be Good Fit For Lakers
by Ben Rosehart - nbcsandiego.com

The Los Angeles Lakers are a mess.

The Purple and Gold are expected to miss the playoffs for the 3rd straight season which would be the first time in the franchise’s history. And after the first few weeks of the season, whatever they are doing on the court is obviously not working.

I’m predicting right now that within the next 3 years - Luke Walton, the San Diego native – will be the next good Lakers coach.

Doesn’t mean he will be the next coach. But when the Lakers turn the corner and get back on the road to relevance – I expect Luke to be in the driver’s seat.

Walton is currently earning his coaching “driver’s permit” as interim head coach of the defending champion Golden State Warriors.

This season the Lakers have an aging star in future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, who is starting his Derek Jeter-like farewell tour around the NBA in what is probably his final season.

It doesn’t take a basketball savant to realize that the Lakers’ future lies in the young players on the roster. This includes recent first round draft picks Julius Randle, D’Angelo Russell and the underrated Larry Nance, Junior along with emerging star Jordan Clarkson.

But if you think current head coach Byron Scott is leading the Lakers back to relevance, you need to sit the next few plays out.

Robert Upshaw confident the D-Fenders will lead him quickly to the NBA
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

While the Lakers are in Miami on Tuesday to play the Heat, undrafted center Robert Upshaw posed for a photo in his D-Fenders uniform at the team's annual media day.

Upshaw, a 7-foot center with a massive wingspan, joined the Lakers for both summer league and training camp, but was waived before the regular season. Instead, he's an affiliate player with the Lakers' NBA Development League squad.

"I knew I was going to be cut. I knew that before anybody," Upshaw told the Los Angeles Times.

"I've been through a lot. I've been through really a lot in the past year and a half," he said. "You don't get opportunities like that after you've done what I've done. I've just tried to put that behind me, use this opportunity, because I know at some point this year I'll be playing in the NBA."

Upshaw, who was released from two college programs (Fresno State and Washington) for team violations, is open about his battles with drugs and alcohol. He once missed a college game because he was out late the night before, under the impression the team only had a practice scheduled the following day.

Despite averaging 10.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and an outstanding 4.5 blocks a game before his dismissal from Washington, none of the NBA franchises in the draft were willing to take a gamble on Upshaw.

The Lakers wanted a look in summer league, but Upshaw arrived out of shape -- partially because he was red-flagged with a potential heart issue leading up to the draft that he ultimately cleared.

A camp invite, with just $35,000 of his two-year $1.4-million contract guaranteed, was waiting for him with the Lakers -- provided he put in the work and go through counseling for his off-court issues.

The 21-year-old center successfully put in the work, losing 25 pounds by the time the Lakers met in late September, a sign that in the right environment, Upshaw could be productive.

Julius Randle After 1-7 Lakers Start: ‘Throw Our Egos Out The Way’
by Ramneet Singh - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers suffered an embarrassing loss Tuesday night at the hands of the Miami Heat. Although the Lakers did manage to keep the game within reach in the first half, they were completely dismantled in the final two quarters. The defense was lackluster and the Heat took advantage of that with a 101-88 victory.

As a team, the Lakers committed 18 costly turnovers and the Heat capitalize on their inability to take care of the basketball. No player in the Lakers starting five had a plus/minus above zero and there just seemed to be very little chemistry on the court. After the game, Julius Randle had a lot to say about the state of the team and what needs to be done moving forward, via Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters:

"We aren’t doing what we work on...we’re going to have to throw our egos out the way...we’re going to have to gel as a team."

D’Angelo Russell On His Confidence - ‘Through The Roof, In Space Somewhere’
by Corey Hansford - lakersnation.com

With the Los Angeles Lakers starting off the season at 1-6, the optimism that surrounded the team at the outset of the season has begun to die down. One main sticking point for fans so far this season has been the lack of fourth quarter minutes for second overall pick, D’Angelo Russell.

With the Lakers being blown out in Miami, many expected Russell to see the floor down the stretch, but head coach Byron Scott never considered bringing the rookie back in. Despite this, Russell’s confidence remains extremely high according to Shahan Ahmed of NBC Los Angeles:

"Through the roof, in space somewhere" - D'Angelo Russell's response to how his confidence is after the game.

Kobe questionable for Lakers' game against Orlando because of sore back
by Broderick Turner - latimes.com

Kobe Bryant has been listed as questionable for the Lakers’ game Wednesday night against the Orlando Magic because of a sore back, a team spokesman said.

Bryant didn’t play in the Lakers’ loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday night because of the back, quickly ending his goal of playing in all 82 games -- just seven games into the season.

Bryant told the media after the game in Miami that he "had trouble walking."

"I hurt the back a little bit during training camp," Bryant said.

Magic buzzer-beater hands Lakers third straight loss - What you need to know
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Here’s what you need to know about the Lakers’ 101-99 loss in Orlando against the Magic …

THE GAME IN 140 CHARACTERS OR FEWER

No Kobe Bryant? No problem. The Lakers' issues were bigger: rebounding, late-game execution and former USC star Nikola Vucevic.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT*

“You just got to take advantage. If you get the opportunity and you don’t take advantage of it it’s pointless.” – Lakers’ rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell on playing a team-high 32 minutes. He finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.

STAT OF THE NIGHT

While the Lakers held the Magic to 40 percent shooting from the field, they gave up 23 offensive rebounds.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

• Larry Nance Jr. came off the bench and made all six of his shots, including a 3-pointer. He finished with 13 points and three rebounds and may be in line for an increased role. “I love the way Larry plays,” Coach Byron Scott said. “I love the energy he plays with, I love the confidence he plays with. … He’s very mature out there, he doesn’t make a ton of mistakes, he knows his own game.”

Kobe misses Orlando game with sore back
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

What started out as back soreness in training camp has morphed into an injury that affects Kobe Bryant’s ability to walk.

The Lakers’ star sat out Wednesday’s game against Orlando Magic at Amway Center, marking the second game in consecutive days the 37-year-old Bryant has remained on the sideline. Lakers forward Metta World Peace started in Bryant’s place at small forward.

Lakers coach Byron Scott said he had a “pretty good feeling” Bryant would play in Friday’s game against Dallas. Scott also added that Bryant “felt better” Wednesday after admitting he “had trouble walking” prior to Tuesday’s contest in Miami.

But Scott conceded, “I don’t know how this will play out,” mindful that Bryant suffered season-ending injuries the past three seasons. Bryant also missed two weeks of training camp after bruising his lower left leg.

“In the games he’s ready to play, he’ll play,” Scott said. “If he has some ailments that are bothering him, we’ll give him the day off.”

Bryant said Tuesday night he hurt his back during training camp through normal “wear and tear” of a 20-year NBA career. But Scott said he did not become aware of Bryant’s back issue until he reported it feeling “a little stiff” following last Saturday’s practice in New York.
