Byron Scott says Lakers are deciding Kobe Bryant's minutes 'a game at a time'
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

The Lakers’ plan for Kobe Bryant has evolved as the season has gone on.

That’s the nice way of looking at it.

The more cynical perspective is that they don't have one.

If Byron Scott has thoughtfully developed an outline for how the Lakers (2-12) plan to keep Bryant healthy and make him effective, the coach has not shared it.

Mired in a dismal start, the Lakers face a stretch of three games in four nights starting Saturday at Portland. They return home to face Indiana on Sunday and then open an eight-game, 12-day trip Tuesday in Bryant’s native Philadelphia.

How Scott treats his aging, struggling superstar in this stretch will say a great deal about the coach and his ability to wisely manage Bryant.

Is three games in four nights wise at this stage in Bryant’s career?

“I haven’t even thought about that yet,” Scott said.

That statement raises questions of its own about how Scott is handling Bryant. If the coach isn’t looking forward and targeting games to rest Bryant, or finding consecutive days he can rest, is the 37-year-old Bryant destined to be betrayed by his body for a third straight year?

The Too Long Goodbye - Kobe goes out as only he can
by Mark Heisler - dailynews.com

If you’re wondering what point there is in Kobe Bryant going on from here ...

That’s a really good question.

I know the answer: He’s Kobe.

This isn’t just a game, it has been his life in a way that it may not ever have been for any other player.

Actually, with his legacy safe and the direction of the season set, there’s nothing important at stake, crazed as it is making everyone.

“Yeah, I’ve seen him play and it’s disgusting,” an opposing player told the Los Angeles Times, quoting sources anonymously as if tracking the Watergate burglars back to Richard Nixon.

In real life, for every Bill Russell who goes out on top, 100 Michael Jordans, Kareem Abdul-Jabbars, Magic Johnsons, Larry Birds, Wilt Chamberlains and Jerry Wests leave as imitations of themselves and are revered nonetheless.

Kobe carved his legacy in stone years back: Not as great as MJ or as controversial as Wilt, but close.

TDIKH: November 29, 2002
by nba.com

In a duel between future champion teammates, Kobe Bryant gave Pau Gasol a preview of the scoring tandem the two would become in the future.

Bryant scored 45 points to push past Gasol (24 points) for an overtime victory.

Shaquille O’Neal added 33 points and 13 rebounds to help the Lakers stave of an upset from the 2-13 Grizzlies.

Bryant was especially lethal early and late, scoring 12 points in the first quarter, 12 in the fourth and eight in overtime. he finished the night 18-of-35 with six rebounds and five assists.

The Lakers led by five with a minute left before Jason Williams knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers.

But Bryant, who played 48 minutes, helped L.A. out to a 8-2 run to start the extra period, and Memphis never came closer than five points.

“We just used our experience really and just cut them up,” Bryant told reporters after the game. “We didn’t want to lose this one.”

Roy Hibbert must face his feelings when playing Pacers
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

This will be the easy game for Roy Hibbert, the one in which he sees former teammates without having to return to the state of Indiana.

The Lakers play host to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, setting up a training-wheels experience for Hibbert of sorts.

Hibbert won't hear from the fans that didn't appreciate him. He won't face the media that criticized him toward the end of his seven-year Pacers run.

The real test will be Feb. 8, Lakers at Indiana. For now, there's only a screen test at Staples Center.

“I'm not going to lie — I'm going to feel something [Sunday] but I don't know what that something is going to be,” Hibbert said Saturday. “I didn't mark this down on a calendar but I knew this day was going to come so I figured the questions were going to come. All in all, I wish those guys the best, just not against us.”

Hibbert, who turns 29 in two weeks, was averaging 8.6 points and 6.8 rebounds before Saturday's game against Portland. Both stats represent slight dips from last season, when he was all but evicted from Indiana because of his inconsistent game.

Pacers President Larry Bird and Coach Frank Vogel strongly hinted in end-of-season interviews the Pacers couldn't even guarantee him a starting spot going forward.

Then the Pacers drafted center Myles Turner from Texas in late June. That same day, Hibbert exercised a player option for $15.6 million for this season. His days in Indiana were officially numbered.

Hibbert has been fine defensively for the Lakers, averaging 2.3 blocked shots a game, but his scoring and rebounding are down. He often gets lost in the shuffle when the Lakers' offense impatiently breaks down into a series of boring, and typically unsuccessful, isolation plays.

Nobody really looks for him, a reason why his shots are down from 9.3 a game last season to a mere 5.3 before the Lakers played Portland. That game ended too late for this edition of The Times.

“I've made a point to our guards, if you see both numbers on his chest, throw him the ball,” Lakers Coach Byron Scott said. “It's not that difficult.”

Lakers Need More From Byron Scott
by Keith Rivas - lasportshub.com

Byron Scott is still desperately trying to earn respect from the Lakers and their faithful fans.

You look at the incredibly bad losing record, the off-shoot ideology behind treatment of Kobe Bryant, or even his outspoken distrust in D’Angelo Russell — wherever you look, there’s a loose piece in the chain.

Per a recent ESPN report, the Lakers head coach is doing what he can to block out the noise.

Unfortunately, Los Angeles is not the best place to look for a safe zone if you’re a member of a professional sports organization.

If you don’t give the fans what they want, particularly when with the Lakers, things are going to get tough very quickly — and there’s no guarantee that things will ever change for the better.

Looking forward, if Byron Scott continues to have problems trusting D’Angelo Russell with the ball despite early struggles, it’s all but a lock for fans, and event the front office, to start voicing their disapproval.

Instead of giving it to Russell in trying times, Scott has often opted to give Lou Williams more time on the floor.

The problem is two-fold with that decision, and we’ll start to see the consequences unfold shortly.
