He doesn't have to be extended in 2018. He's under contract through 2019/2020. Extend him then. |
Before the 2018-2019 season, if there is no extension signed and we only pick up his $7 million option, his trade value would plummet. Even if he plays well that year, teams will just wait until the offseason rather than trade for him as an expiring contract. His contract does expire in 2019, as do all 1st round contracts after four years. |

I wouldn't trade FOR George. But I would do a trade that helps get rid of Deng and Mozgov. Long term, not all of these youngsters are going to be Lakers. So management can somehow use their assets to get rid of Deng and Mozgov, there's value in that and I think it would speed up the rebuild. Of course, they'd need a clear path to adding another superstar via free agency or trade in addition to George, as George himself isn't enough to build a contender. |
