Step 1) Trade Julius Randle, Larry Nance, and Jordan Clarkson for Demarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo at deadline

Why for Pels: 3 legit rotation players all 25 and under for a guy who is very likely going to leave them come the offseason. Since they committed so much money to Holiday, they are forced to remain competitive.

Why for us: Detractors will say why not just wait to sign Cousins in offseason...trading for him now saves us $3 million in offseason as his cap hold will be $27m versus the $30m it will take to sign him to a max. Not to mention we get better this season which makes us look more legitimate to off-season FAs

Step 2) Trade Luol Deng and Brandon Ingram for Paul George

Why for Thunder: Obviously getting a potential all-star in Ingram, a guy whose ceiling would very well be at or even surpass current Paul George is a huge coup considering PG is all but gone next offseason. Absorbing Deng is the cost of acquiring Ingram.

Why for Lakers: I know, I know. Why move Ingram when we can sign George for free in the offseason. In a vacuum I agree, but for the 3-max plan to work, we need to maximize cap space and this trade now only rids is of Deng, but also of Ingrams 7.5m cap number which then frees up money for the third max. This is contingient on Paul George accepting his player option this offseason for 20.5m.

Step 3) Sign LeBron James for max contract starting at $36m

The two above trades rids the entire roster of all contractual obligations sans Lonzo, Hart, Kuzma, Bryant, and the newly acquired Cousins(27m cap hold) and George(20.5m exercised player option). Even accounting for minimum roster spot cap holds at roughly .5m each, this gives us just enough money to give LeBRON a full max. At this point you go ahead and sign Cousins to a full max, tell PG3 he's getting his full max next offseason, and fill out the roster with ring chasing vets and the room exception.

Final 2018 roster:

PG - Lonzo / Vet
SG George / Hart
SF - LeBron / Vet
PF KuzGOAT / Vet
C - Cousins / Bryant / Ver

Not to mention the roster sans LeBron would have half a season of chemistry and hopefully a playoff run under their belts, and everyone from the previous regime would be gone so the front office, coaching staff, and players would all theoretically be on the same page.

Tankathon

Currently, both New Orleans and OKC are in the playoff picture.

Your trades have both New Orleans and OKC giving up on the season and making moves for the future. For them to have the motivation to make your suggested trades, they would need to become longshots for making the playoffs.

What is going to happen over the next 6 - 7 weeks that is going to have OKC and New Orleans drop out of consideration for making the playoffs?

Why is Paul George targeted to be the one from the trio to play for quite a discount from a possible Max contract while LeBron and Cousins give zero to minimal discounts off of what their respective Max contracts could be?

22. What is the minimum salary a player can receive?

The current minimum salary is $815,615.

Quote:

The minimum salary scale amounts for the 2017-18 season were negotiated into the agreement. For each subsequent season the minimum salary scale amounts are determined by applying the percentage change in the salary cap to the previous minimum salary scale amounts. For example, if the salary cap increases by 4% from 2017-18 to 2018-19, then all minimum salary scale amounts also will increase by 4% from 2017-18 to 2018-19.

Good Plan, I like it, except it leaves the Lakers with ZERO depth and a creates a team that still may not be able to beat the Warriors...

This is one of those trades that look great in the Lakers Forum, but would never happen in the real world!

I don't think your plan works. George and Cousins can both be free agents this offseason, thus there will be a cap hold for their salaries.

Step 1 - Clarkson has salary of 12.5 million and Cousins will have a caphold of 19million. That is 6.5 million additional salary cap blocked from being able to chase free agents.

Step 2 - Paul George salary next year (if he opts in) is 20.7 million. Deng + Ingram is about 24 million total. In best case scenario, Lakers free up about 3.3 million in cap space. However, this is unlikely as Paul George will likely opt out for a larger contract and I believe his cap hold is more than the 20.7 million he is due.

Overall, your step 1 and step 2 is going to net more salary cap being blocked off so I don't see how you will have $36 million to offer Lebron compare to the Lakers current situation of trying to offer 2 players max.

What is the Max salary cap you are assuming?

Lakers Trade: Deng/Ingram to Chicago
Chicago Trade: Mirotic to Lakers

Lakers Trade: KCP/Randle to Pelicans
Pelicans Trade: Cousins to Lakers

This sets up the off season. Paul George will see that we are building to win sooner than later so it gives him more reasons to come to the Lakers. A trio of George/Cousins/Mirotic would be hard to defend by anybody and when you add in Lonzo distributing the ball to those three plus Kuzma and Clarkson off the bench, we would be instantly built for a playoff push.

2018 Lakers Lineup:

PG: Lonzo/FA
SG: Hart/Clarkson
SF: George/Kuzma/Brewer
PF: Mirotic/Nance
C: Cousins/Bryant

Additional players and or draft picks may be traded by all teams involved to make this work.

Thoughts?

They'd be great deals for us. I don't think the Bulls or Pelicans would be interested, though.

With Boogie out of the picture, for this year at least, I can see the Lakers making a move for Love. K Love has fallen out of favor in Cleveland, and a return home to Cali, might be just what he needs. Also, if we sign Love, we still have money in the bank to keep Randle and maybe even KCP, at a discount.

My trade scenario:

Cavs get: Clarkson
Brewer

Lakers get: Love

Lakers starting lineup next year with Paul George added to the fold in the offseason would look like this:

PG: Lonzo/Ennis
SG: PG/KCP/Hart
SF: BI/Kuzma
PF: Love/Nance
C: Randle/Bryant

That line up would fall into the Golden State theme of positionless players, with all the players 6'6" and above being able to switch and defend multiple positions.

That lineup itself won't get us to the championship, but we will be competitive and fun to watch.

No rim protection.
