Charles is a ton of fun doing "The Match" broadcasts. But as a serious golf commentator.
I don't really see Charles being the key to opening the door to lucrative TV deals for LIV. He's not going to bring more eyes to the LIV. It's not like NBA fans are suddenly going to start saying, "I gotta start watching this golf stuff!". _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Yeah, TV is all about selling ads. There's no company out there right now that wants to attach itself to LIV. |

Charles Barkley says he won’t join LIV Golf broadcast team in blow to new league
For a little while there appeared to be a chance NBA legend and TNT analyst Charles Barkley would join the Saudi-backed upstart LIV Golf league. But according to a new report from the New York Post, the potential Barkley-LIV partnership will not manifest.
A week ago, Barkley dined with LIV CEO Greg Norman to discuss a potential role, and Barkley agreed to tee it up in the pro-am at the LIV event at Trump Bedminster Thursday.
In an interview with the New York Post earlier in the week, Barkley revealed that due to the “risk” joining LIV would cause to his sponsorships and his current $30 million TNT deal, “it would have to be some serious money thrown my way” to get him to sign on. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Judge rules three LIV players will not be permitted to join FedEx Cup playoffs
The battle between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour has reached the first of what will surely be many courtrooms.
U.S. District Court Judge Beth Labson Freeman heard arguments from attorneys representing both the PGA Tour and a consortium of eleven LIV-affiliated players on Tuesday afternoon. Three LIV players — Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones — were seeking a temporary restraining order that would permit them to compete in this week's tournament, the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
However, after a two-hour hearing, Judge Freeman ruled that the players had not proven that they would suffer "irreparable harm" if they were not permitted to play. She also indicated that the players were fully aware of the potential consequences of joining LIV when they did earlier this summer, and that they had earned a substantial amount of purse revenue as a result of their decision to play on the LIV tour. Accordingly, the LIV players will not be in the field this week or the rest of the PGA Tour playoffs.
As I have said from the beginning, if you want to wallow with money and opportunity, don’t (bleep) if the bridges you burn come back to haunt you. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Losing the TRO is not indicative of how the antitrust lawsuit will play out. The TRO had little chance of being granted:
Quote: | Why these three LIV players are likely to lose their first legal battle
With their petition for a temporary restraining order, or TRO, the three are asking to have their suspensions lifted.
Gooch, Jones and Swafford are also part of a group of 11 LIV pros who filed suit against PGA Tour last week, alleging that the Tour is acting unlawfully in levying suspensions against golfers who have joined the rival Saudi-backed circuit.
That case has the prospect of dragging on for years.
Gooch, Jones and Swafford are seeking government intervention now, through a petition that amounts to a request for “extraordinary action,” according to Craig Seebald, a partner and antitrust specialist with international law firm Vinson & Elkins.
“Asking a judge to step in and stop something while a case is playing out is not an everyday request,” Seebald says. “For them to seek something like this on day six of a lawsuit is pretty extraordinary.”
For their request to be granted, the plaintiffs will have to meet a robust legal standard, Seebald said. For starters, they will need to show that their case has the likelihood of succeeding on its merits. They will also have to demonstrate that they will suffer “immediate” and “irreparable” injury without relief, and that the harm they stand to endure outweighs any injury a TRO would inflict on the Tour. Lastly, they will have to show that a TRO is in the public interest.
Proving immediate and irreparable harm is a high bar to begin with, Seebald said.
“With a TRO, you’re basically saying, ‘the patient is on life support, and if we don’t do something now, something dire is going to happen,’” Seebald said.
Examples of recent federal cases that have triggered TROs have included such front-page headline issues as vaccine mandates in the military and bans on specific immigrant groups.
In general, Seebald said, issues like “immigration, health care and abortion generate TROs. Not rich golfers.”
In the United Kingdom last month, Ian Poulter and two other LIV golfers who’d been suspended by the DP World Tour, had their suspensions lifted by a non-profit appeals board, allowing them to compete in the Genesis Scottish Open. But the legal landscape is different across the pond, and, Seebald said, a judge here “will not care what happened in Scotland.”
Whether the golfers’ larger antitrust suit against the Tour is likely to succeed is another matter, one that the judge would likely rather see resolved over time in the courts, Seebald said.
“I think what’s she likely to say is, ‘It seems like there are reasonable arguments on both sides, so let’s take this to discovery,’” Seebald said. “She’s going to be balancing a number of factors, but I think where she is going to come down is, ‘You’re basically asking me to clear the way for you to play in a couple of more events, and I have a hard time getting involved.’”
Seebald said the judge is also likely to question the timing of the players’ request.
“I can see her saying, you’ve known about these suspensions for a while now, why are you just coming to me now?” Seebald said.
That same point was hammered home by the Tour on Monday in its own court filing responding to last week’s lawsuit. With its request for a TRO, the Tour’s filing read, the plaintiffs “have waited nearly two full months to seek relief from the Court, fabricating an ‘emergency’ they now maintain requires immediate action.”
Also on Monday, LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman issued a statement reiterating LIV’s position that the players, as independent contractors, should have a right to compete where and when they choose.
“I believe all players — whether they choose to play with LIV or the PGA Tour — understand and appreciate the purpose and importance of the players legal actions, across the globe. The PGA Tour is trying to cast this as ‘us’ against ‘them.’ The players know better.”
Norman has said that LIV will support the players in what are almost certain to be protracted court battles. As for the TRO, that matter should be resolved much sooner, according to Josh Davis, a professor at the University of California, Hastings College of Law, and a leading scholar on antitrust procedure. Davis said he expects the judge to issue a decision quickly, either from the bench at the close of the hearing, or shortly after.
Like Seebald, Davis believes the chance of a TRO being granted is slim.
“The general rule is, Any chance? Anything’s possible,” Davis said.
“Realistic chance? Nope.”
Tuesday’s hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT at the U.S. District Court for California’s Northern District, in San Jose. If Gooch, Jones and Swafford hope to be on the course in Memphis this week, they’ll have to beat long odds in the courthouse first.

The Telegraph (of London) has reported that LIV has poached Cameron Smith, the #2 ranked player in the world, although I suppose it isn't official yet. Smith wouldn't answer questions directly, but I think it's pretty clear where this is going. It sounds like he wants to complete the FedEx Cup Playoffs and play in the Presidents Cup later this month, and then perhaps he officially bolts. Assuming it happens, this is a pretty big deal. I think I heard on the radio that he got either $100MM to join or at least $100MM. His career earnings are $27MM. |

I heard he’s not in violation until he actually tees off. The next LIV event is in September or so, I think. That’s how the PGA handled all the others. They waited until they actually teed off before suspending them. |

I know a lot of you guys are all for the players bolting for the big bucks. But I find it pretty gross and classless that some of the guys are totally exploiting things to be able get the benefits of the PGA tourneys while joining the PGA. If the above is Cam’s play, I have lost a great deal of respect for him. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

No matter how much the PGA Tour fans are denying, the LIV Tour is going to drain their organization of talent incrementally. They can say they are washed up, old, etc.....but if you keep losing talent to the competition, it will eventually hurt their Tour. |

That’s true. It’s just really weird watching essentially one person decide to fund a golf league with no plans or prospects to actually recoup the investment. Essentially a vanity project to lash out at an organization that only tepidly held him to any account for being a transparent mass murderer. _________________ “We must always take sides. Even though I think the PGA Tour has done some hypocritical things, I don't have sympathy for the LIV players if they can no longer play PGA Tour tournaments. They got their money, they are playing for more money whenever they tee it up with LIV, and they should have been prepared to not play on the PGA Tour any longer. However, the LIV events deserve World Golf Ranking points, and the LIV players most certainly deserve to play in the majors, which are not run by the Tour. |

Yeah, my main issue is with the idea that the guys who bailed on the PGA and very vocally slamming it wanting to have it both ways. In another distasteful irony, many cited the increased income as a “quality of life issue” that would allow them to play less golf and therefore spend more quality time with family only to complain they were being restricted from playing more golf. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

One of many reasons I'm a Rory fan:
Rory McIlroy can't stop, won't stop daggering LIV Golf lawyers
On Sunday at East Lake, McIlroy enjoyed another gratuitous moment at the expense of LIV Golf. When he entered the media center for his Sunday press conference after closing out his two-shot victory over Scheffler and Sungjae Im, McIlroy reportedly raised his arms and chanted to the gathered press: “Super Bowl champ!”
So what? Well, in case you don’t remember, Robert Walters, a lawyer who represented LIV golfers Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones in their court hearing earlier this month seeking an injunction to gain access to the PGA Tour’s playoff events, had described the FedEx Cup as “the Super Bowl of golf" and the hardest trophy to win. In turn, golf Twitter had a field day with what was characterized as an out-of-touch description of the postseason by the attorneys that also wasn’t convincing to the U.S. District Judge, who ruled against allowing the suspended players to play in the PGA Tour events.
Touchdown McIlroy!
This wasn’t the first time Rory had fun with the Super Bowl comparison.
McIlroy also got another dig in on LIV Golf during the presser when he noted that it wasn't until the 70th hole of the tournament that he actually was leading for the first time all week. “On the 70th hole is a nice time to take the lead of a golf tournament,’’ McIlroy said. “Or the 52nd hole if you play somewhere else."

Losing Cameron Smith is a huge blow to the PGA and a major get by LIV.
Winning the Open makes Smith exempt to the Majors for the next 5 years so I think he is banking on the two circuits brokering some kind of deal before then.
LIV was widely reported to be getting Matsuyama and Cameron Young also, but they apparently had a change of heart and at least for now are sticking with the PGA.
It wouldn't surprise me though if guys like Schauffle and Cantlay go to LIV also, the PGA needs to stem the defections or figure out a way to co-exist. If the LIV ends up getting golf world ranking points, I think you will see many of the top players defect at that point. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

Yes, the reports are he was paid an even $100MM to make the move.
Career earnings $27MM over 8 years on tour and that includes his big year this season winning The Open.
With that kind of money being thrown around, it is going to be very tough to stem the defections. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

‘Not fooling anybody’: Why Jon Rahm is irked some LIV players are in the BMW PGA Championship field
. . . this week’s field has some players entered who have not normally teed it up at the Wentworth Club in England. For some LIV players, it’s an important start — World Ranking points are up for grabs (they aren’t available in LIV events yet), and those points go a long way in securing invites to majors.
The main issue here is that those players, even if they have qualified through priority rankings, are kicking other DP World Tour members out. Some even received LIV contracts, so other pros see it as a double-dip.
“In my understanding, there is a double standard when it comes to the relationship LIV has with the [DP World Tour] and the PGA Tour,” said Rahm, when speaking to Sky Sports on Tuesday. “The PGA Tour can survive without some of the biggest stars because there’s so many new ones coming in. The [DP World Tour], some of those bigger names you still may need.
“I don’t necessarily disagree too much with that,” Rahm continued. “What I do disagree with is some of the names that have never expressed any support toward the [DP World Tour], any interest, or the event, whatsoever, and to be giving those players an opportunity and take it from players who have dedicated themselves to the [DP World Tour], I think it’s wrong.”
The issue is personal for Rahm. The first player out, he said, was Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, a fellow Spaniard and close friend of his. He’s played 20 events on the DP World Tour this year but didn’t get in the field.
The interviewer brought up the names Talor Gooch and Abraham Ancer as LIV players who have been criticized for entering the tournament and pushing others out. Gooch has never played in a DP World Tour event; Ancer has played in a few but never a BMW PGA.
“I’m not going to name anybody, but the only reason they are here is for World Ranking points, hoping they can finish in the top 50 to then play certain majors,” Rahm said. “It’s clear as day. And if they are saying otherwise they are not fooling anybody, at least not me.”
Rahm said he has no issues with LIV players like Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter playing Wentworth, because those pros spent years on the DP World Tour and earned their spot. He even included Patrick Reed, who has long played European events, saying Reed’s shown interest over the years and “earned” his right to be there.
“But some players, even though they qualified, however they qualified, they are taking a spot from some players that deserve it way more than they do,” Rahm said. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

I sure do love Rory smack talk:
Rory 😃.
Q. If come Sunday you find yourself in contention and the man to the side of you is a LIV player, would there be more incentive to win?
RM: I mean, I'll be trying to win a golf tournament regardless. They are going to be pretty tired on Sunday; it will be the fourth day. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Tiger will squeak into the weekend, but I don't think he'll be much of factor other than the spectacle. He played well in moments (that last three hole run yesterday was a blast to watch and today's almost ace on 14 was great), but he's clearly not consistent enough to make a run for contention, and we'll see how his ankle holds up; there were too many shots where his swing was clearly hampered by it. It'll still be fun to watch him over the weekend if he can hang in through it. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Even though Tiger's not much of a threat to win a tournament he's still one of golf's biggest draws. He pulls in the crowds. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
