Would he put us over the top to beat the Warriors?
No, we need Kawhi at minimum to beat the Warriors.
If the team is close during the season to make a run, why wait when a guy like Butler can potentially help us like Gasol? I don’t think it’s guaranteed that we get Kawhi.. emplay said it as well.

No
So you wanna wait even though the team would have the opportunity to find that missing piece?
Nah, in order to really compete, we have to add a 2nd star during FA next off-season and Ingram, Lonzo, and Kuzma need to become good to border-line all-star level players. We can't trade those guys for a 2nd star.
If it only cost one of the young guys you do it. He’s not Kawhi but he’s a good defensive player and scorer. Any team with Lebron and another star is contender. _________________ Coach Vogel, Kidd, Hollins
Max slot : Kawhi
Well, the Lakers can see how the present roster plays, if they are killing it, then go ahead and wait for Kawhi, if they are not winning, then pull the trigger on Butler before the trade deadline and still have the cap space after the season to land Kawhi, Thompson or Cousins..
A lineup of:
PG: Ball
SG: Thompson OR Kawhi
SF: Butler
PF: Lebron
C: "Any tall stiff that can run the floor"
Would be pretty darn good...! _________________ Do YOU control your Emotions? Or do your Emotions control YOU?

The question is: Is there a way to trade for him, while retaining our cap space, so we could ALSO sign Kawhi next year? _________________ Never argue with stupid people! They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience!! - Twain

The should only pursue talent the size of a LeBron or Durant.
I could see trading assets for him, if we can keep our cap space available.
I don't see a way to trade for him though as I would not consider including BI in a trade. It would have to include Lonzo but I can't see moving Lonzo AND Kuz as that would just be too much to give up. We lose almost all our youth and we still are not close in salary. With everyone else on one year contracts, not sure why anyone would let us include those in a trade.
If it comes down to the fact that we ONLY have the $$$ to sign one more guy, then I think that guy has to be Durant or Kawhi. Honestly, it would be the first one who would sign with us when the time comes. If neither of them are willing to come at the time, then Butler would be next. I think a starting lineup of Lebron, BI, Kuz, Butler and Lonzo would be a very solid lineup. _________________ Never argue with stupid people! any realistic trade will involve us trading away valuable talent back to the Wolves so no. Also Im not that big on Butler anyway. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi

We pretty much need a second superstar (Kawhi or Durant) PLUS Ingram, Kuzma, and Ball developing into All-Stars or borderline All-Stars in order to have a realistic chance of taking out the Warriors (unless they have a major injury.)
Getting Butler likely requires giving up one or two of Ingram/Kuzma/Ball plus the cap space we need for the second superstar. No thanks. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

Since we stretched Deng, there is no easy way to trade for a star talent this year. No one wanted Deng and his deal anyway. We will wait till free agency, probably ask Durant first if he hasn't already committed to GS again. Then basically ask KL, Klay, and Butler at the same time and see which if any want to come here. Butler may be the low-hanging fruit, the guy with basically PG13 ability but more health risks, who is most willing to come here. Butler I think is like that 3rd or 4th choice you ask to the prom. Nice, but you go for the biggest asset first.
Durant
Kawhi (if he shows himself healthy)
Klay
Butler
In that order. _________________ LAKERS 2019-2020: NBA World Champions!

We don't need Butler. We have enough head cases. Why overload Luke's plate? IMO he wouldn't be a good fit. Rockets in a win now mode. Will it come back to bite them?
Rockets offering 4 first-round draft picks for Jimmy Butler trade

Looking at how the Lakers have been playing, they are obviously 1 Star away from being a serious threat. They have also shown they can get by without BI, Lakers should offer Ingram, KCP and a 1st Round pick for Butler, that's as good of an offer as they are going to get, based on him saying he wants to play in LA!
Ingram is young and will be a great fit with Townes & Wiggins and KCP will fill the void left at the "2", plus he is a FA after the season, so they can possibly free up some cap money.
This may hamper the Lakers ability to offer max contracts to a bunch of guys who are probably not coming here anyway, like Durant, Thompson and Kawhi, but may leave enough room to make a run at Cousins (IF HE RECOVERS) as we all can see how we are getting killed against opposing big men!
This year:
PG: Ball, Rondo
SG: Butler, Hart
SF: Lebron, Stephenson, Svi
PF: Kuz, LBJ, Wagner
C: McGee, Williams, Zu
Next year:
PG: Ball, Stephenson
SG: Butler, Hart
SF: Lebron, Svi
PF: Kuz, LBJ, Wagner, Williams
C: Cousins, McGee, Williams
That would be a team that would easily be at least #2 in the West! _________________ Do YOU control your Emotions? Or do your Emotions control YOU?

A second star is already a star, Ingram, Lonzo and Kuzma aren’t. So we pass on a known star for maybe stars? _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

Butlers's on his way to Philadelphia. East will be won by Philadelphia or Boston. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
