The Mavs FO probably wants to tank for a better asset/pick in 2025 draft. At best they'd do a play in appearance with AD. Lose 1st round (if they can even win play in games).
AD wants to prove he's an elite player/champ. Elite players don't sit out to tank. They still have a small shot at making the play in at 10.
With Kyrie probably gone all of 2025-26 season as well, I don't really see what AD can do other than be part of a great defensive team that stays competitive. They just don't have a roster without Kyrie that can give you enough offense to contend for a top 6 playoff spot.
Tough situation for AD. On one hand he can prove something as the man. Something he hasn't been since his Pelican days. On the other hand, he's 32 and carrying that load will probably only make him more injury prone. Klutch should advise his client to move to another team. Dallas does a proper full out re-build. There are teams where AD can make a significant difference in title contention vs no title contention. Those teams may give you draft picks and young players.
Dallas can tank 2025-26 they have their pick. After that they don't control picks. So moving AD for a rebuild package and tanking next season should absolutely be a move they should go for. That's what I'd do in their situation. The issue is they've already said they want to win a championship and play elite defense, hard to say that and 3 months later trade AD. However, Kyrie going out for a year+ that should buy some leeway with fans for justifying a rebuild year. |

He really should pack it in and rest up for next season. _________________ LAKERS 2019-2020: NBA World Champions! |

Hey WP, I appreciate your posts. Here's a fun exercise based on Dallas doing exactly as your post proposes. Of course, one of the most logical teams to target is OKC. So, let's say OKC comes up short this year, and they want to do something to improve their prospects.
A successful NBA trade machine idea is:
Dallas -Hartenstein, Gafford and Lively- one would be good trade bait
Cason Wallace- A young Kentucky stud
Isaiah Joe - lights out shooter
And more frps than they'd ever want. About 3 or 4 of them.
Of course, the funniest part of that trade is the fact that Nico Harrison should have gotten that type of package for Luka. |
