The Dunk... Where do you start in this one?

You want to talk about AD’s defense in the fourth quarter, including a game-winning block at the buzzer. He showed why he’s one of the best in the game at that end of the floor tonight with multiple huge plays down the stretch. (Get that Defensive Player of the Year hype going already!)

Maybe you talk about that game-winning freethrows LeBron sank 5 seconds earlier to give the Lakers the 99-97 lead.

Nah.

Rewind further.

This game will be remembered for LeBron taking lives with a hellacious dunk in the first half. It was a vicious number on the Kings that was bigger than just this game.

LeBron has looked great this year physically. He’s had more track down blocks, he’s playing tougher D, rotating, hustling. Everything has pointed to him looking better physically.

But nothing made that more abundantly clear than one massive throwdown tonight. Father time just got hammered on.

In those few brief seconds the thought had to flash in your head (haters and fans, alike) that, hmmm, maybe LeBron has a little more in the tank in the tailend of his career than originally thought.

Let’s hope so.

LeBron -- -- Let’s get real. LeBron did a ton of good things out there tonight, but this game is only going to be known for one thing -- LeBron hammering a massive jam over Bjelica. Wow! If you didn’t think LeBron had a bit more bounce in his step this season, he erased any doubts in the first half tonight. The dunk will be played again and again. I know I did when it happened. LeBron started dancing at midcourt just briefly, looking like he was getting ready to make something happen. He attacked left, got speed in the lane and it was over. Taking flight from the bottom of the circle, he brought the ball back to his right and destroyed the rim and the defender beneath him. He took some souls on that one. The reaction on some of the Kings faces on that were priceless, the fans went insane, the bench exploded. “I just feel great,” LeBron said, mentioning again he’s got his spring and twitch back. Oh, LeBron also had a pretty good game, including drawing a foul with 5 seconds left and hitting the game winning freethrows. He had 11 points and 5 assists in the first half. He loves going to that three-pointer after lulling his man to sleep and then quickly gathering and hitting the stepback. Seems like he pulls that out at least once a game. He did that in the first half. In the fourth, he had a great read weakside on an inbounds pass to swipe the ball under the hoop, pushed it out and lobbed to Davis for the dunk. Unfortunately, he had one of his few turnovers shortly later that led to a Kings And-1. Still. Just 2 turnovers with 11 assists. Some great passes, including lobs to AD, outlet to KCP for a score, finding Caruso multiple times, McGee for his only dunk. His passing out of the post is probably the best in the game. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 10-20 shooting (2-7 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 11 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a +13.

Davis -- -- “When the shot’s not falling I try to do the other things,” Davis said. This was an ugly game for him offensively, but AD is a two-way player. He can win you games on the defensive end. Down the stretch in this game, he had his hands on multiple defensive plays. Of course, the game winning rotation at the rim to roof a drive at the buzzer was the defensive play of the night. But he also forced multiple misses from others. Buddy Hield had to throw a shot into the rafters trying to shoot over him and airballed. Bogdanovic was forced into a turnover, with AD smothering him at the elbow on an iso situation. He did the same to Barnes on a similar type of attempt, blocking that one. He also chased down a loose ball in the corner and saved it to Caruso. All of those were huge, huge plays in the fourth quarter when you are trying to win the game. Love it. Offensively, very quiet first half with just 6 points in 15 minutes. We were a bit too perimeter-oriented at times, including AD, who was 1-3 with his two misses from behind the arc. A lot of double teaming to try to slow him down. In the second half, he forced the issue a little more. Some of it good, like a baseline And-1 spin before the double could arrive. A couple bad plays where he forced up off-balance runners (he actually hit one of them). He also couldn’t connect on an iso jumper late in the game. He was able to get to the line and manufacture some points, but they didn’t come easy for him tonight. Doesn’t matter when you can do what he did defensively to close this game. So good. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 5-12 shooting (0-3 from three, 7-9 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 4 blocks, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -5.

Green -- -- He’s killing me on the inbounds passes. He had another one that was picked off trying to throw it to midcourt way too slow and the Kings ran under it, turnover and basket. Two turnovers on inbounds plays in the last game. Uggh. Defensively, we switched a lot with the Kings shooters. That picked up steam in the second half. Green jumped a passing lane navigating the screens for a steal in one of those plays for Hield. He also had a nice block at the rim off the glass to save the hoop. Overall, fairly quiet night and we kind of sat him out a bit down the stretch of this one. His one make from three in this one was probably his hardest, he took contact, spun away, dribbled and hit it. He seems to shoot pretty well in some of the scramble plays. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-8 shooting (1-6 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +8.

McGee -- -- He had several touches in the post early on, which meant our offense wasn’t running smoothly. We don’t want to run the offense through him. We want him working off others. Not a lot of that in this game and the Lakers bigs were a bit neutralized. HIs only make was flashing under the hoop when LeBron was in the post. LeBron hit him and McGee reverse jammed. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a +4.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Give this man his due tonight. “Game ball to KCP,” LeBron said. He was huge in the fourth with multiple scores. Kind of a strange rotation for him tonight. With Bradley’s hairline fracture, they went back to KCP in the starting lineup. He didn’t hit rim on a drive and missed a wing three, and Vogel quickly pulled the trigger and brought AC in (more to get another ball handler in there with LeBron being pressured). He brought KCP back to start the second quarter. In the second half, we started Caruso instead of KCP. But in the fourth, KCP got some lengthy run and he made the most of it. He got to work in that quarter, hitting a midrange jumper when the D left him and leaking out for a layup off a LeBRon outlet. He scored attacking with speed off an AD handoff to power in a layup baseline over Hield. Then he swished a wing there off a quick swing pass. He got his confidence going and was out of his head. I hope he can build off this. He can be streaky, so hopefully he can build off this. “KCP exemplified our next man up mindset today,” Vogel said, defending KCP saying his energy has been consistent and arguing that he has had an up and down season. They need to build KCP’s confidence up on the offensive end, so good job the coach. “I’m just trying to get my confidence back and just come out here and play and have fun with my teammates,” KCP said. Let’s do it, KCP. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting (3-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -7.

Kuzma -- -- He put in the work on his three ball this summer and it’s been starting to show in flashes the last few games. He started this one hot, making a three trailing the break and a couple off of DHO-type exchanges. He led the Lakers with 13 points on 4-7 shooting in the first half (3-5 from three). He’d go scoreless in the second half missing his two attempts from three and charging on a baseline drive. Defensively, he was a little on the soft side tonight. He did have a couple good sequences, one of which helped the team get a shotclock violation. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-9 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -1.

Howard -- -- He led the Lakers in the first half with a +9. Not a lot of action, although he was battling on the glass. Throw in the usual illegal screen fouls and another foul on the offensive glass that led to freethrows and you have a little drag on the offense. His one bucket was a dunk on a passing sequence against the zone. The Lakers have seen a lot of that lately and are getting pretty good executing against it for easy scores. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +6.

Caruso -- -- More great chemistry with LeBron. In the third, they ran back-to-back plays where Caruso gave it to LeBron in the midpost on the right side, he curled around a screen from his big and LeBron bounced it to him cutting down the lane for layups. Sweet passes by LeBron. Next time down, they had Green feed the post on the same play and LeBron then found Caruso in the corner for a three. Three possessions, 7 points. Love seeing that chemistry. “These guys work on their game every single day,” LeBron said. Despite Caruso missing a few shots in a row early on, they still went to him and Caruso’s confidencen never wavered. The more they can work Caruso into being an offensive threat, the better. AC got the minutes tonight, third most on the team. A lot of fans wanted Caruso to be playing above several other guards and Vogel is doing just that. Good job, coach. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +5.

Rondo -- -- A team-low -12 in his 18 minutes. Off ball, the Kings were not even guarding him as soon as he came in the game. This helped them to clog up the paint and keep the Lakers more perimeter oriented. They were a -5 in the first half with Rondo on the floor. We kept him on the floor too long in the first half with LBJ out there and then did it again in the second half. You could see LeBron getting into takeover mode in the fourth, but Rondo off ball is like a couple of ankle weights. His minutes should have been about 5 or 6 less tonight. They called a timeout in the fourth and I thought for sure they were going to sit him, but they brought him back in to knock Hield over for three FTs and drain our lead completely. Not happy with the usage, even with Bradley out. I know they want someone to do some ball handling for LeBron, but if LeBron is going...you got to sit Rondo, put in a shooter and stand back. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -12.

Cook -- -- He came in midway through the second quarter. We ran that Rondo/LeBron combo too long and really needed a shooter out there. We finally brought him in, but LeBron went out shortly. When LeBron returned it was for Cook. So not very optimal as far as rotation. Cook banked in a floater on a drive for his only points. Just a few minutes in this one. A little annoyed he wasn’t in there for Rondo for a few minutes in the fourth. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 boards and no fouls in 4 minutes. He was a +6.

Dudley -- -- Not much going on in this one. He had a few minutes to miss a layup on a drive and complain about a foul. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -7.

Vogel -- -- He sat KCP with 8:22 left for AC. Early sub, Lakers down 11-6… Timeout down 13-6 shortly later. The scored an And-1 out of the timeout, but on the options they drew up.… They trimmed the lead to 2 and forced a timeout… Down 1 when Kuzma and Rondo came in for McGee and Green. The Kings instantly ignored Rondo when he didn’t have the ball… Down 3 when Dudley came in for LeBron with 3:38… They trailed 30-20 after the first quarter. The Lakers shot 6-22 (3-13 from three in the quarter)… He started a Dwight, Kuzma, LeBron, KCP, Rondo lineup… Seemed like we’re going too long with Rondo in this stretch. Needed a shooter out there. LeBron is on the floor, give him space to work… Lakers were down 42-29 when Vogel called a timeout after 4 minutes. Dunk for Dwight against the zone on the ATO on that... They trimmed the lead in half with Kuzma scoring and forced a timeout… Down 6, they brought in Cook and Green for Rondo and KCP… Down 1, AD in for Kuzma who had 13 points in his 12 minutes. Caruso in for LeBron… They trailed 50-49 at the half. The Kings shot 10-20 from three, the Lakers were 7-22 with just 11 assists in the first half… Caruso instead of KCP to start the second half… McGee sat at 7:33 for Kuzma, Lakers up 4… LeBron out for Rondo, Lakers up 8 with 3:33 left. KCP in for Caruso... Not a good finish by that group… The Lakers led 74-71 heading into the fourth… He started a Dwight, Kuzma, LeBron, KCP, Rondo unit… LeBron started to take over and they extended to an 8-point lead… Timeout with 7:20 left up by 4… They kept the same lineup out there out of the timeout, not sure why we aren’t sitting Rondo… Up just 1 when we sat Rondo for Caruso and brough AD back for Kuzma finally midway through the quarter… Timeout, up 2 with 56 seconds left, Laker ball. Iso for Davis who missed a 17-footer… From AD’s comments, it sounded like the staff had them prepared for that fake handoff and drive that the Kings ran at the end of the game. He was right there to snuff it out. Good job, by the coaches...

A win is a win, but this game should not have been close at all. The Kings were undersized and overmatched and the Lakers bricking wide open three after wide open three kept things interesting. That and the Kings hitting everything from deep (sidenote: do they do anything else than shoot from there? What a visually unappealing game style). The Lakers just played into their hands with their gunning, despite good things happening when they went down low and cut.

Eeesh, on to the next one. And thanks, DB!

Thanks DB. It was a weird game somehow. I didn't expect it to be so close but Luke did a good job of covering AD in this game. But still a good win and it's great KCP had it going in the fourth.

Thanks DB. I have a suggestion for the coach section of the write-up. Instead of doing a psuedo play-by-play on rotations, maybe you could perhaps highlight the decision making and postulate the mindset behind some of his decisions and whether or not you liked it? Similar to how you talked about the mismatch between Rondo, LBJ, and Cook's minutes in the rotation tonight. I think it's the hardest part of the game for a viewer to understand and it'll be great to hear what you have to say.

Some Advanced numbers for the game and +/-

Offense:

Cook 128 (only a few min)
Howard 128
McGee 126
Lebron 125
Green 108
Caruso 105
KCP 98
Kuzma 96
AD 94
Rondo 81

The second unit when it was AD, Kuzma, Rondo together in this one really, really stank up the place and struggled. The O ratings reflect that. In contrast that when Lebron was with the second unit, the offense ran very well. We had a lot of issues with AD in this one, and Rondo had a poor 2nd unit run in this one.

Defense Rating for the game:

Cook 37
Green 88
Caruso 98
Kuzma 100
AD 103
McGee 104
James 107
Howard 110
KCP 112
Rondo 113

Our second unit struggled on defense in this one, as well. Rondo again, was not able to help the team like he should be. Not sure KCP is a starting level guard either. Nice game from him in terms of making shots. However I prefer we start Caruso or Cook.

+/-

James 13
Green 8
Howard 6
Cook 6
Caruso 5
McGee 4
Kuzma -1
Davis -5
KCP -7
Rondo -12

Lebron was huge in this game. Thought Howard deserved more minutes, do not like KCP starting, and this was a real struggle for AD on offense. Great defense by AD. That is a 2-way superstar. When offense is not there. dominates on D.

Next game, need to look at finding ways to get Davis the ball in better situations and to figure out what to do against doubles. Throughout this season, AD has struggled with doubles, He does not recognize where his teammates and can have tunnel vision. We do not want him to be a 6'11 SG who gets his shots off that way because the post is drawing too many doubles. The doubles are a great thing, we need to use AD to draw in the doubles and then open up the scoring chances for others.

Rondo has to run more screen/roll when he enters the game, so that the team can make up for the lack of outside shooting respect. I do not like him sharing the court without at least one other stand out shooter. So if it's AD, Kuzma and Rondo out there, the other 2 guys need to be able to make their 3 point shots and bring something. I would share the backcourt with Cook (pretty good shooter) and maybe try to get Green in there for some minutes. If not Green, then Daniels when he returns. 3 point shooting is vital. Do not think it makes sense to run lineups with Rondo where there's not at least 2 other reliable 3 point threats and then also not utilize Rondo's elite passing skill. More pick and rolls with AD. Especially when AD is getting doubled. Better IQ needed from the team.

Thanks, DB.

Since Kuzma's return, Vogel is taking too long to get Dwight into the game. The immediate upshift in defensive intensity that usually accompanies his insertion into the game is now delayed for a bit, which seemingly allows teams' offenses a longer period of time to get/stay comfortable at the start, and thus Dwight's initial disruptive impact accordingly appears to be minimized, coming in against a team already in their flow.

I realize the Kings were bombing 3s, not going to the rack, etc., but regardless of the other team's strategy, I miss Dwight's impact earlier in the game pre Kuz's return.

Thanks DB. We really missed Avery Bradley last night. He is the doberman we wanted Marcus Banks ( ) to be for us back in the day. I've noticed he's shown an ability to play make a lil bit too. Hope he gets well real soon.

That being said, I'm happy Vogel put KCP in his place. Psychologically, I felt just putting him with the starters would give him a boost, mentally. Bron would set the table for him (and limit his bone headed shots). I saw a couple of blown layups, but for the most part, he was solid and he always gave great effort defensively. He came through last night as a result.

AB and KCP (defensively) will be key all year to help with slowing down the highly talented perimeter players of the league.

I like the adjustments Vogel and his staff are making after halftime, game to game, etc. Good to see.

Thanks DB! Good to see KCP having a good 4th qtr and helping us out. A confident KCP is definitely preferable to the tentative one. We'll need him in these "next man up" situations.

I felt this way too. I kept expecting us to pull away easily, so this game didn’t feel close at all until it came down to the final possession. We have a much better team but I feel like the effort just wasn’t there tonight. It wasn’t a “good” win in a way— almost reminds me of how the Kobe/Pau era Lakers would not take weaker teams seriously the whole game and then lose in the end. In fact, the Kings are one of the teams that this would most frequently happen with.

Love the win but a little annoyed it took so much effort and went down to the last shot vs a below mediocre team. I know the kings been playing well of late but it boggles me how they were able to bottle up AD on offense.

Hopefully the Lakers come out stronger next few games so lbj and AD can play fewer minutes

IMO Kawhi, Giannis, pre-Achilles Durant, and Anthony Davis have all surpassed him, but he’s still top 5.

I think it's the hardest part of the game for a viewer to understand and it'll be great to hear what you have to say.

I will see if I can add a little more of that in. I’ve been really impressed by the staff this season. They are really “quick” in their decision making. Not just making changes at half time and shaking up rotations, but game by game. For instance, AC is playing a ton. Other coaches we might not see that for another 20 or 30 games. But they’ve been sniffing out where the impact has been pretty quick. You can tell Vogel pays attention to analytics even if he has a couple old heads on his staff. There’s been a pretty good balance.

I’ve always felt it’s tricky to be fair in that section with critiques because I’m not dealing with all the information they have. There may be a small injury we don’t know about and so a certain player didn’t play. Or maybe someone didn’t switch in a situation they’ve told them to several times, so they sit him to make a bigger point. Maybe they know someone is failing at something but leave them in to make a teaching/learning point and getting reps. All of that could be valid for a single decision he made. So sometimes all you can do is just wonder why something did or didn’t occur.

I know our defense is great but there are a few things that concern me and hope they don't show up against equally talented teams.

Our three point shooting is horrible and we won't get far if this isn't improved.
AD is a great talent but o feel like he settles a lot of off balanced fadeways and often attacks the rim with some less than optimal floaters. Too many threes for my liking. I know it's extremely early in the season but I'd like AD to learn to recognize the mismatches. There was a play late in that moments of the game where he could have attacked the basket for what would likely have resulted in free throws. Instead he danced and settled for a fadeway shot from above the elbow.

It's been a rough couple of years and I'm watching them win, but everything still feels so damn surreal.

By the way, does anyone disagree that LeBron is still the best player in this league? Damn.

IMO Kawhi, Giannis, pre-Achilles Durant, and Anthony Davis have all surpassed him, but he’s still top 5.

So far, with his defense, he’s played better than his teammate AD and maybe even Kawhi. Not sure about Giannis and Harden but I got no qualm if someone rank LeBron #1 right now... he playing hard D for god sake
