I guess being a total system QB now with the lowest aDOT in football, throwing short passes to the Sun God, and handing the ball off can get you paid like crazy. It's very telling to me that even with possibly the best offensive line in football, all they let him do is throw short without challenging defenses.

It does seem like a lot of money for him, but that is the crazy world we live in.

I like the idea of maintaining continuity at least, but I have to wonder if they will regret this contract down the road.

Also, someone needs to calm Dan Campbell down a bit on 4th downs this upcoming season....aggressive is good, foolhardy is bad.

Jodeke, can you start a 2024 thread for NFL Discussion?

I can't figure out how to get the footballs in the Subject Line like you did for 2023. Plus you are a LG Legend, so it is only appropriate.

OK LL. I didn't notice I hadn't changed the year. Changed it to 2024. Good Catch👍🏾

2024 is going to be interesting. Caleb Williams has a lot to live up to. He looks good. They're going to compare his rookie year to C. J. Stroud. C.J. was amazing. Caleb will have to play off the charts to equal what C.J. did. He has the personal around him so if he doesn't match up he'll be criticized.

Who will be the Steelers quarterback, Russel Wilson or Justin Fields? I think Wilson will start the year on a short leash. If he falters Fields will get a shot. Tomlin is once again on the hot seat.

The Chicago Bears brought home seven wins last season, and their over/under for 2024 is set at 8.5 victories.

The Bears are in a competitive division, it'll be a dogfight between Green Bay and Detroit. Chicago doesn't project to be as good. Detroit and Green Bay will jockey between 10 or 11 wins, Chicago will likely go 1-3 against those two teams this season, putting a damper on a potential double-digit win record. I see Chicago's ceiling at 9 wins.

I'm looking forward to the Bears vs Packers. I think they play Nov 17th, Love vs Williams. If I have it right it's a Bears home game.

Definitely a buzz around the Bears this year. I like them to exceed 8.5 wins this season, excited to see Caleb Williams in the NFL as I think he is an absolute stud.

I am curious to see how the rookie QB class performs. As a rule, I prefer rookie QBs to carry a clipboard, but that's not always realistic as the best prospects are drafted by the worst teams. There's too much temptation to play them before they're ready.

Caleb Williams is a stud, and if they played in a weak division like the NFC South they'd be playoff-bound.

We won't see much Penix, which is a good thing. I like him, fantastic release, but he needs time. Fortunately Atlanta has Kirk Cousins, and plays in a weak division.

Jayden Daniels is in for a challenge, and if he stays healthy he might even by ROY. That OLine is awful in terms of pass protection but decent at run blocking which means he'll rack up some yards on the ground as well as yards in the air. The latter might be necessary as they'll play behind in the second half of most games.

Bo Nix is NFL-ready, but his ceiling is competent game manager. That's what Drew Brees became late in his career, and Sean Payton did a good job squeezing that last erg of offense out of him.

Drake Maye: His mechanics are still a mess. Even out of the shotgun. He still throws flat-footed rather than lead with his left. Drop backs are an adventure, that's where footwork becomes critical as every tenth of a second counts. He still doesn't position his feet properly which impacts that time to get rid of that ball. And he's no Penix, his release is long. He has arm talent but his mechanics limit that potential. On the plus side, his processing looks better than I anticipated. There's a good chance New England will play him earlier than they should, and given their awful O Line and poor WR corp, they might stunt his development.

I think that they get back to Bear football and the defense takes a step forward. Watching Hard Knocks and Keenan Allen was talking about how he hasn’t caught a pass matched up against Jaylon Johnson.

Geez, I need to check out Hard Knocks...I forgot they were the team in it. Definitely a buzz in Chicago but the NFL is brutal and anything could happen.

Detroit seems to be the class of the division and Green Bay was excellent at the end of last season so it won't be a cakewalk in the division but I think they will win some games provided some things break right from a health perspective for their key guys.

The offseason Hard Knocks with the Giants was very entertaining, a good look into the business side of the league.

Trey Lance with 5 INT's yesterday vs. the Chargers.

And that is playing against pre-season guys.

He has zero chance to even be second string in Dallas.

I hate it. Nothing dynamic about it and it clearly isn’t having the desired results beyond increasing the number of catch and runs. But they are dull and just about every one ends at the 27 yard line.

It is dull, but then let's see if some team counters with a strategy. If a special teams unit can quickly form a three-man wedge for the return man, they might generate a score. In the preseason teams were playing conservative by putting lots of bigger players up front on the kicking team, which gives you size at the expense of speed. If a ST unit tracks the vector of the kick, they might be able to anticipate, form a wedge, and create an opportunity for a fast return man. With those bigger players for the kicking team up front, once a returner breaks free he's in for a potential score.

I absolutely hated the direction of the New England Patriots front office this past draft. They received good grades from pundits for doing the obvious: Drafting Maye with the third pick. I'm sure 98% of any NFL fan base would have done the same, a front office shouldn't receive an "A" or "A-" grade for doing the obvious.

What concerned me was this misguided decision to prioritize mediocre WR draftees over drafting a quality LT. There were three high-qualilty LTs who likely would have ended up as late first round picks. Each of them would have ranked as high first round picks in almost any draft, but this draft was very, very deep at LT, so most needy teams drafted low-risk, high-reward LTs early. There were three guys that might have dropped into the 20s: Mihms (lack of playing time, injury concerns), Fautanu (unpolished), and Guyton (maturity issues). That's not counting Morgan, who looked more RT than LT. As it stood, Mihms got taken early at #18, Fautanu at #20, which left a potential diamond, Guyton available in the mid to late 20s. New England had the #34 pick, had they paired it with their 3rd or even 4th round pick, they could have moved up and grabbed him. Instead Guyton went to Dallas at #29. Stupid.

But what did Wolf, the NE GM do? Traded down from #34, so that he could select a WR3 prospect and a RT in the early third round that most observers felt was a late Day 3 pick. The WR3 prospect looks just "OK" and the RT has been spotty at best as a backup. Poor hand fighting technique, and manages not to trip over himself most of the time in pass protection.

The presumptive starting QB got injured last night during the first series. It was the result of the starting New England OLine looking like fools against Washington's backups. The QB got injured on the RT missing his blocking assignment, allowing the DE to destroy the QB. The inept New England RB never picked up the DE, and the QB got flattened, falling hard on his throwing shoulder.

I can't blame the RT, he's stared and practiced at RG for almost the entire preseason. The third round draftee RT is mediocre, and the other candidate at RT has been demoted. OLines function as a unit. When an OLine is thrown together haphazardly, the best coaching technique is to have your OLine point directly at their blocking assignment. Pointing prevents the type of confusion and missed assignments, it is a cornerstone of football at the high school level. What a mess.
