I hate it. Nothing dynamic about it and it clearly isnā€™t having the desired results beyond increasing the number of catch and runs. But they are dull and just about every one ends at the 27 yard line.

The changes were put in place because kickoffs were the most dangerous plays with the high-speed collisions contributing to concussions. The hope is the new rule will increase the number of returns without making it more dangerous as the new return will be more similar to a regular running play than the old version.

I know what the intent was and why is was implemented. The point is itā€™s not having the desired results. Itā€™s dull, and while it may force the number of ā€œreturnsā€ up, the runs themselves are nothing exciting, just a 15 yard dash into a scrum, and the way it designed, the odds of a long return go way down.

Iā€™m all for reducing injuries, but if this is their solution, you might as well just give the ball to the offense on the 30 and get on with the game.

Not really. Those ā€œreturnsā€ donā€™t amount to much and actually look kind of silly. Might as well just get on with an actual play from scrimmage if youā€™re not going to do an actual kickoff.

Personally, I would rather see the funny looking kick offs than spotting it at the 30.

The ball ends up in the same place either way.

Tomlin picked Russ Wilson over Justin Fields as starting QB. While Tomlin obviously sees things we don't in practice, I still find that interesting.

Russell's going to be on a short leash.

Totally agree. We know Wilson has no upside at this point, but he got the gig because Fields just didn't wow in the preseason. They both take way too many sacks, and at least Fields gives you the upside of the run. However, Fields has horrific field vision when it comes to scanning the field to find receivers. You know, being a functional NFL quarterback. Still, if something ever clicked, he at least has a ceiling, something that Wilson lacks now. We know what he is, and that's a declining vet who was never the best at going through progressions himself, and now the sack issue is very real for him.

I think it's 50/50 as to which QB actually starts more games for them this year. Their best offensive lineman was supposed to be their expensive guard signing, Isaac Seumalo, and he may miss a month or so with a pec injury suffered yesterday. If the OL is a sieve, Fields may give them a better chance to at least extend plays, although you know he's a sack machine just like Wilson is. For this reason, the Falcons DST is a great streaming play in Week 1 for those of us who play fantasy football.

Browns cut QB Tyler Huntley.

Chargers should pick him up, he would be a major upgrade as a backup compared to Easton Stick who honestly is terrible.

The Chargers traded for Taylor Heinicke yesterday to be their backup. The Ravens only have 38-year-old Josh Johnson as Lamar's backup at the moment, so perhaps a reunion with them makes the most sense. It does seem like Huntley would be an upgrade on many teams' backups.

I missed that Stu, but actually Heinicke is a good pickup...experienced guy and still young. I like Huntley though, Cleveland was supposedly trying to trade him (I wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers were one of those teams they were talking to) but couldn't find a deal. They they cut him as they already have 3 other guys on their roster.

I do like Huntley also though and you are right that Baltimore would now make sense it would seem for him.

Off-topic a bit, but I am very interested to see how Harbaugh uses Justin Herbert this year. I know you are a bit skeptical of Herbert and I cannot completely disagree, though he does have great arm talent and at least average athletic ability for a current NFL QB.

But does he have "it", where he leads the team to wins they shouldn't get just because of his own will, leadership, moxie, whatever....no, I have not seen that yet from Herbert.

If that is in him, Harbaugh is going to be the guy to bring it out. The Chargers still have a lot of holes at WR and D Line, but Harbaugh is going to pull this sled uphill until either they win or he implodes.

The 49ers finally got Brandon Aiyuk to agree to a four-year, $120 million extension. It seems like a bit of an overpay, but he seems to be on an upward trajectory and is just 26.

If they also resolve Trent Williams' contract situation, their offensive line could be better this year if Dominick Puni becomes a stud. In that scenario, Brock Purdy could do even better this season with more protection, and it could result in Aiyuk's production getting better. There are signs the Niners may even throw the football more this season than they have in the past.

Translation: Aiyuk could be in a situation where he earns every penny of his new extension.

When you look at it through the lens of him getting $76MM guaranteed, that's 76% of the guaranteed money that CeeDee Lamb got. That's not too bad.

In looking at the reporting, it appears that the 49ers were willing to trade him to the Steelers, but only if they could have swung a trade for Courtland Sutton of the Broncos. The Broncos rebuffed them.

Niners are gonna have some salary cap troubles not far down the road... Honestly thought they'd trade Aiyuk to help a bit with that.

They probably will, but Aiyuk's new deal has actually created some cap room for them.

Quote:
On Brandon Aiyukā€™s backloaded contract: The 49ers lowered his 2024 cap hit from $14.1m to $5.8m. So SF actually opened $8.3m of 2024 space.

The 49ers now have over $24m of cap space this season.

Looking forward to the NFL, college is such an uneven playing field now that 90% of the games are huge talent mismatches and unwatchable.

Anybody heard of this story? A VP for the Commanders was set up. He met some woman online and went out on a couple of dates. He said some nasty things to her (think of Donald Sterling). Turns out, she was an undercover reporter and she recorded the entire conversation. They posted the video and he's been fired now.

Here's the story:

Quote:
Commanders fire VP for comments on players, Jones, Goodell

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Commanders have fired an employee one day after a video surfaced in which he made comments about the team's players being anti-gay, accused Cowboys owner Jerry Jones of being racist and called NFL commissioner Roger Goodell a "50-million-dollar puppet."

Rael Enteen, Washington's vice president of content the previous four years, also criticized fans and called them "mouth breathers."

The team on Thursday confirmed the firing via a spokesperson but had no other comment on the matter.

Washington had suspended Enteen on Wednesday, shortly after the video from the O'Keefe Media Group was played on social media platforms. According to the video, Enteen had met the woman on the dating app Hinge, but she turned out to be undercover for the media group. They met twice in June at restaurants in D.C.

In a statement Wednesday, the team said it would investigate the situation. Less than 24 hours later they fired Enteen.

Quote:
"The language used in the video runs counter to our values at the Commanders organization," a Commanders spokesperson said in the initial statement.

Quote:
He told the undercover reporter that, "over 50% of our roster is white religious, and God says, 'F--- the gays.' Their interpretation. I don't buy any of that. Another big chunk is low-income African Americans that comes from a community that is inherently very homophobic."

Quote:
Enteen also said, "I don't think the commissioner of the NFL hates gay people, hates black people. Jerry Jones, who really runs the NFL, I think he hates gay people, black people."

Quote:
Enteen, who was with the Jets for two years before coming to Washington, called the league's social justice initiatives "performative."

"It's not done out of the goodness of their heart," he said. "It's done because George Floyd changed the game. ... It's to make as much money as possible. The NFL cares about the bottom line, like any corporation, above all else."

Enteen said because they league makes so much money "they can faux prioritize DEI [Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion] for the sake of good publicity."

Quote:
Enteen also said on the video that "most of the fans are high-school-educated alcoholics" and called them "mouth breathers."

Quote:
On the video, Enteen also said some players are "dumb as hell" and also said some who were smart don't stay that way after getting hit in the head too many times. He also said those who "get their heads knocked around a few times" are more susceptible to conspiracy theories.

Quote:
Enteen also told the reporter, whose name was not revealed and can only be heard on the video, that his job was to sell hope. Three years ago, there were videos of pipes leaking at then-FedEx Stadium. Fans said it smelled like sewage leakage, but Enteen said he tweeted out that it was just water.

"That," he said, "is state-run media."

Thoughts? I don't condone what he said, but I don't like people being set up like this either.

Finally a TNF game with relevance, Eagles vs Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes is favored to win against Lamar Jackson. Lamar has more pressure because he has more to prove. Patrick, been there, done that. Defense will win tonight. KC has a proven defense, Philly is a work in progress. I got Philly tonight. The game is scheduled to air on KNBC4 in Los Angeles. Who ya got?

It's raining hard in KC. Arrowhead Stadium isn't covered. Arrowhead Stadium has a natural grass playing surface.

KC favored by 3 points tonight.

It is the classic upset scenario, the defending champs opening at home and not being ready to play.

So I could see the Ravens potentially winning outright tonight since it isn't a playoff game when Lamar tends to play tight and choke.

That said, I bet the Chiefs -3!
