Said it before and I'll say it again: football would run more smoothly if they just allowed holding in the trenches. Not on pass routes, but just allow holding among the lineman. I'm dead serious.

As Jodeke said above, you could literally call holding on every play. So it has become so subjective as to be a problem. Maybe don't allow the offensive lineman to tackle or trip, but loosen up the holding rules a bit. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny

That's the NFL. The officials are human. They make mistakes. They catch some and miss some, call some, and don't call some. That's why I don't think the Chiefs get preferential treatment. There are too many missed or egregious calls to think Tim Donaghy. I don't know what you think, as you're older than I am (I'm 46) and have possibly seen more games than I have, but in my personal opinion, I have never seen officiating as bad as it is right now, across all sports. In football it's especially egregious. Tennessee ended up beating Miami easily, but it was a close game at halftime specifically because the officials were screwing over the Titans. The field judge twice had them short of a first down when it was obvious that they made it, they blew the whistle on what should have been a clear path defensive TD on a lateral, and they called back a long Tony Pollard run on a marginal hold at best.
That brings me to the Seattle-Detroit game, my goodness. On the sequence where Seattle ended up failing on the 2-point conversion from the 1 after the PI penalty, Metcalf actually caught the ball inbounds for what should have been a successful 2-point play. I mean, at the absolute least, it was a close play on the boundary. How do they not automatically review this?!?! And since there was a flag on the play, I mean, Jesus, they had ample time to take a look at it. You mean to tell me that watching it at live speed, you couldn't see that it's a close play, at the very least? No review whatsoever, in a sport that now has replay assist and you don't even need to go under the hood like in the old days?
Then late in the 4th quarter with Seattle driving, DK Metcalf is blatantly, and I mean blatantly, tackled in the end zone before the attempted pass got to him. The official had it happen right in front of him, with a perfect view, unobstructed. The freaking defender literally tackles him! I'm sorry but when I see stuff like this, the words "Tim Donaghy" go through my head. Then after the safety and Detroit kicked off, this very same official calls a holding penalty on Seattle to negate a very good return which would have set Seattle up in excellent field position, despite the fact that on this occasion, he's literally 20 yards away from the play and where the infraction took place. Was it a hold by the letter of the law? Yeah, it could have been, but as we talk about on here all the time, this is something that happens on basically every play and you're telling me that he just so happens to see this one and he just has to call that one, but he can't see the completely obvious pass interference in the end zone that occurs about 5 yards from where he is?
It's the worst I've ever seen it. And when stuff gets missed when they even have replay at their disposal? It's either gross incompetence or something much, much worse. Like Tim Donaghy worse.

I donât think that officiating has changed all that much over the years with the exception of adding replay challenges. What has changed is technology and the way games are broadcast. If I can only see that a call was wrong after slow motion replays from 10 different angles then I wonât blame a ref for missing it with his bare eyes. Especially in football rules to protect players, while well meaning, make the game harder to call. Calls like roughing the passer and targeting could be called from the booth. There arenât enough of them to interrupt the game and they should be able to be decided after a replay or two.
About last nightâs games Goff was amazing. I doubt we see again where a QB catches more TD passes than he has incompletions. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.
Roger Goddell said the new kickoff is not working. Last year saw about 22% of kicks being returned. The new rule has increased this to only 26%-27%. He says moving the touchback to the 35 yard line could be an instant game changer. Unlikely to happen mid season but not ruling it out.

Is this the play you're talking about?
I don't remember. Did they call that incomplete? Did Macdonald have a timeout left to challenge? If not it should have been reviewed by the booth.

I don't love this game and Thursday games can be weird, but if I were choosing a side, I'd probably take the points as well. I think anything could happen tonight.

That was a really fun one to watch. Great QB play in that game tonight. Mayfield is in total command of the Bucs offense, and Cousins is getting more and more in sync with his receivers. Who says Cousins can't win in primetime?!?!
