Loved listening to him and Pat Summerall (RIP) call games in the late 90s and early 2000s. Godspeed Mr. Madden. |

Hands down the most entertaining football color commentator of all time. Super nice guy. I ran into him on a NY sidewalk a Thanksgiving weekend many years ago and he was kind enough chat with me for several minutes.
(Pretty sure he was also instrumental in popularizing the TurDucken )

Yeah, I thought it was kinda wierd considering he was still alive when it aired a couple of days ago....guess the timing was probably a huge coincidence. |

He was a classic American character. Great second act as a commentator and then third act as a video game legend. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

What a legendary man, and what a legacy he leaves behind. Hall Of Fame coach, the biggest name (by far) in football broadcasting after his coaching career, and he lends his name to the video game that is gigantic in American culture. Oh, and a great TV pitchman as well.
Unfortunately, his death doesn't come as a surprise to me. I thought he didn't have much time left dating back to last year, when during a Sunday Night Football broadcast, I recall Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth saying something to the effect of hoping he would feel better soon and that they were thinking about him, and it didn't sound like the garden-variety "we miss you and hope you're enjoying your retirement" kind of thing. One of their voices cracked a bit as he was talking (I think it was Collinsworth), and I just sensed that Madden might be in trouble then. And I do think the airing of the documentary wasn't a coincidence, I think they wanted to get it together and air it possibly while he was still around. I'm glad that he was able to actually watch it with his family on Christmas, per reports. As someone wrote on Twitter, it was like his family got to see their guy get all his plaudits.
Again, a true legend of American sports. A larger-than-life icon. May he rest in peace. |

I know almost nothing about him except that he was a coach and a commentator. The man had the personality and the voice for sports TV, and almost nobody does.
I played Madden 94, 95, and 01 (PS2 release title). All great games. RIP _________________ http://chickhearn.ytmnd.com/

I love football and he was both an informative and entertaining color commentator. He also seemed like a nice guy who you could have a beer with.
I guess he was the NFL's version of Hubie Brown, just a lot more colorful.
I also liked when MadTV parodied Madden. That was funny.
RIP. Condolences to his family. |

Grew up watching him raging on the sidelines of the raider games, and then he became the voice of the sport as an analyst. He was a singular individual and a piece of a lot of lives. He's on a complete class of his own imo. His impact from just his Madden games is seismic. Every year since 1988, millions upon millions of kids heard his voice. It's wild what his impact is really. _________________ KOBE |

I really enjoyed his use of the telestrator. It really helped me understand the various offensive and defensive schemes.

Madden would not fly. He went from location to location in the Madden Cruiser /// [b]LINK /// LINK /// LINK It was said he would stop at local dinners and coffee shops along the way. He would engage with the locals like he knew them. He was an important unassuming man. I drove by Allegiant Stadium today, they had a nice tribute to John on the outdoor big screen. _________________ If you’ve got a dream, chase it, cause a dream won’t chase you back. |

I like how he used it to comment on Aikman trying to grow a beard.

It was different than I expected. I was hoping it would spend more time on his coaching career and on the earlier parts of his life I know very little about.
It was still interesting though. He did so much after coaching they were able to fill up almost 90 minutes of his life after coaching.
It was really moving to see his facial reactions when he was watching the documentary. I sat there kind of in disbelief at the thought that he recently watched this and then passed away. |

He's definitely in a class of his own. My generation knows him mostly because of the Madden video games and his later years as a commentator. I was comparing him to Hubie just in terms of being a commentator, not an icon.
Maybe a better comparison in terms of being an icon who gets little kids hooked on the sport is Charles Barkley. Barkley is having a great second career as Inside The NBA's court jester. |

The madden titles were game changers for sure. I remember the early games had (maybe they still do) an option on the in-game play calling menu called "Ask Madden". I would got to that every time I needed to get out of a tight spot. It made you feel like a real coach and like you were getting real advice from the greats. It added so much immersion and realism to the game. Just having the madden namesake gave them a lot of legitimacy, in my opinion. |
