Damn. I didn’t get it like him for the longest time, but once I finally did, what a maniacally funny, smart, and very cool guy. Will miss him.

Gilbert was one of THE most utterly filterless comedians in history, bar none. And he was fortunate that his career predominantly happened in a more receptive era than today for his brand of comedy. Remember the Comedy Central roast of Hefner circa 01/02. He was hilarious. He withdrew most of what he was gonna say to rip on Ice T's weird routine and Ice was laughing w/ everyone else. It's kinda hard to describe it because neither of them were exactly PC, but Gilbert's screaming delivery was at least half of his effect. He and Norm and Steven Wright were among the tops in terms of delivery. RIP both Gilbert and Norm MacD.

That was the first scene that came to my mind as well.

R.I.P.

Was that the first time he started using that voice?

He has a claim as the funniest roast comedian of all time. I know he did a lot more than that, but this dude just owned roast sets. He would have his fellow comics howling with laughter. There was no one like him. He was absolutely fearless and relentless, and whether you loved him or hated him because of that voice, he was memorable, that's for sure. I'll miss him. RIP, Johnny Crunch!

From the Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne Barr:

"Anyway, here's an old one. A farmer comes home late one night and he wakes his wife, Roseanne. The farmer is holding a sheep under his arm. The farmer says 'this is the pig I've been (screwing).' And Roseanne says 'you idiot, that's not a pig, it's a sheep.' So the farmer says 'shut the (blank) up, I was talking to the sheep!'"

I just watched that roast. I had no idea that Aflac fired him as the voice of their mascot for doing Japan/Tsunami jokes on twitter. Respect.

Gilbert was one of those comedians that others great comedians point to us genuinely funny.

It's been a tough year for comedy.

RIP

Sops made good use of that joke, too. I wish I could recall the exact circumstances, but on a Stern appearance once, Booey had heard a story from a celeb who had a German driver (sthg to that effect) who Gilbert had been obnoxious to. The driver had once encountered Gilbert by himself on another job, iirc. She said Gilbert started doing all kinds of Holocaust jokes just to annoy her and she was thoroughly disgusted with him because he never let up for the entire time she was in his presence. He seemed to have no recollection of this, so Baba finally was able to get the driver on the phone to talk about the situation and Gilbert was LHAO as he always did. Long story short, he would bleep with people so often that he forgot about some of them and he didn't even require an audience. Some of the jokes she said he discussed were really... He was dying laughing at his own mischief, a Jew making Holocaust jokes that unsettled a German. I've never seen another comedian who cackled like a demon at the most rank comments about HIMSELF. He was a true-to-life troll in every way.
