Summer League Game 2... The Lakers crushed their second summer league opponent with a 100-77 win over the host team, the Warriors.

After a close first quarter, the Lakers got separation. Again, hitting threes and getting to the line for some very efficient scoring has been their M.O. They went 14-17 from the line in the first half, while the Warriors were 4-8.

For the second game in a row, every Laker was in the positive on the +/-. The Lakers two-way contract players (Pippen and Swider) led the way in scoring as five Lakers got into double digits.

It’s a well-balanced Laker roster, and they haven’t really been challenged yet by any single player that they couldn’t handle.

Christie -- -- Quiet offensively as he wasn’t taking as many shots. We want him basically spotting up, knocking down jumpers, curling off screens for jumpers, getting out in transition or attacking close out. Low usage stuff. Anything beyond that, he’d be doing too much. He dunked in transition off a bounce pass while changing ends. He banked in a floater after curling to take a pass and attacking. He struggled on a couple finishes (I think both were going to his left), and one was rejected. He attacked a close out from the corner and hit a high arching teardrop for his other score. Reasonable stuff from him. A couple times it looked like he didn’t have a plan in mind. The rebounding again was excellent. His length and nose for the ball were apparent on multiple plays (including one where he battled for a couple offensive boards, then kicked it out to Swider for a three). Defensively, more good stuff. He challenged Moody into an airball from three. He recovered on a backdoor play to roof his man off and hold him from putting up a shot. We did see Moody overpower him on a baseline drive, knocking him back and scoring. Again, that will be a problem at the next level. (Wait until Christie learns to fall down and take the charge on those. That’s the other way Reaves was able to handle guys trying to overpower him. Once Reaves learned that last season, it became very disruptive defensively. Let’s see if Christie can make that adjustment while he works on gaining strength.) He had the team-high +20. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +20.

Pippen Jr. -- -- Really liked this game from him. He was under much more control and distributing the ball better. Once again that knack for drawing fouls was on display, he caught a couple of players on step-back threes as they tried to challenge and took him out. He did try to get one off again like that late in the game and had it blocked with no call. But good job again getting the whistle. Scoring wise, he does an excellent job using his body to shield defenders or put them in jail for scores. He had a couple nice angles he created, including a layup in the halfcourt after spotting a lane and punching the gas. On the assists, he found his shooters for threes and hit Christie on a no-looker in transition for a score. His best pass was on a baseline drive where he drew defenders, then slipped a no-looker between them to his big for a dunk. The improv passing plays looked much better and he led the team with 8 assists with no turnovers. His last 6 quarters have been strong after those poor first couple. In some ways, he reminds me of Jannero Pargo who was a Laker summer leaguer, who had a few years in the league, from way back. They have that similar size without major athleticism, but can get their shot off from the perimeter and mix in some sneaky drives. But he’s got a more well-rounded game, especially if he can put passing games like this together at the next level. Defensively, he was able to be disruptive when he had to recover over the top of screens with reaches. (Usually, in Laker D schemes, we’ve liked to have length and challenge guards up high in those situations). The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 1 board, 8 assists, 3 steals and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +18.

Swider -- -- His mechanics and balance on his shot are just so consistent. We ran a nice stagger flare screen for him to open up a three, which he nailed. He knocked down a wing three on a kickout from Christie. He hit a pull-up in three in transition next time down. Pippen found him on a little kickback in transition for another three. He nailed another three on a swing pass from a big. Offensively, he is playing to his strengths and looks superb in that role. He led the team in scoring tonight, and he’s 8-13 from three in his 39 total minutes in two games. Defensively, again, it’s hard to draw much from these games. He did show that bit of athleticism he has in his game with a track down block. He was whistled for a foul, but that was a bogus call. We’ll give him credit for that one. He’s shown that ability in college. On the perimeter, he got stuck on screens a couple of times (on one he completed to the ref that the screener moved). He also had a poor close out that gave up a drive on a ball fake. Again, though, it’s not like he’s going against someone who is going to put him on an island and get after it, so you have to pay close attention to find things on this end. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-8 shooting from three (1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 block and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a +17.

Huff -- -- Again, he established his presence early on with some shotblocks and alterations. Defensively, very consistent in that regard and he’s done a good job avoiding the fouls. He rejected Moody’s throwdown attempt over him on one. Offensively, a mix of drives off the three line early with hitting a corner three on a kickout later in the first half. That one was a transition play where he ran to the corner, set up and knocked down the open one. First play of the game he and Pippen worked for an And-1 lob dunk. Hard to say where the Lakers net out with their roster, but they do need another big. Huff’s had two strong games to start. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-6 shooting (1-3 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards (2 offensive), 3 blocks and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +13.

Bass -- -- A bit of a black hole in this one. The shot or drive was going up regardless of what the defense did. It stood out. He showed he can drive a little and hit the midrange. He missed the three he took. But he ball-stopped at times and put a hitch in the flow. Late in the game, teammates kind of just stood there and watched versus any kind of movement around him as a result. He’s trying to show what he can do, but you don’t want to stand out that way. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +16.

Cole -- -- Good job knocking down the open looks. He sank a couple of threes for his points (Lakers were 11-25 from three). One make was on a short-roll sequence that kicked to him in the corner. The other he stepped into an open three from the wing after a scramble off an offensive board. His miss was a tough buzzer beater attempt. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a +2.

McClung -- -- A bit turnover-prone in this one. One he got caught in the air and threw it away, another was trying to go behind his back in a crowd. He was efficient on the scoring. He hit a runner on a controlled two-man action. He had a couple of layups after taking contact and hanging. And then another layup off a strong attack in transition to start the fourth. Still waiting for a throwdown. He nearly had one but was blocked (originally called a foul, but reviewed). The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-5 shooting (1-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +5.

White Jr. -- -- He didn’t miss a shot today. He sank a tough turnaround from midrange with the clock expiring. He scored on a slow developing drive from the corner which he muscled in a jumphook. He attacked from the wing for a layup. And then hit a three next time down. A flurry of late scores for him. He led the team on the glass with 8 boards. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-4 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 8 boards, 1 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +4.

Killeya-Jones -- -- The lanky bigman missed his first three attempts and a point-blank layup in his first few shots. Then decided to pass on an open three and hit Swider who was more covered instead. Good call. Cole knocked it down and then things started to go Sacha’s way after that. Pippen set him up for massive dunk under the hoop. He rejected a drive, hit a three and hit a jumphook in the paint. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +6.

Jones -- -- He came out aggressive, forced some things up and got a little wild out there. One pass he launched into the second row. He also didn’t hustle back after a turnover and the Warriors scooped up the ball in the backcourt (he thought Pippen was going to get it). He fumbled another ball away. He and McClung combined for 8 turnovers. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 block, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 4 foul sin 18 minutes. He was a +5.

McCoy -- -- I liked what I saw from Javante. He was defending strong, showing real effort there. He moved his feet well on one drive to draw a charge. He stifled another man’s drive in the paint to force an airball. Offensively, he scored on a couple of tricky makes. One he spun into a pull-up and drained it. On another he hopped into the pull-up and hit from midrange. Very athletic plays and very translatable to the next level. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +9.

Handy -- -- The Lakers have gotten to the line with consistency in these first couple of games. The offense has been clicking at a high level. They have a lot of floor spacing on this team, so that helps. These are some very balanced rosters and you are seeing some of that early on with the results.

Thanks DB.

2nd good shooting game for Swider. 8 of 13 from 3 point land in two games. If he keeps it up, that 2 way will be converted to a regular contact sooner than later.

Phil Handy compared him to Duncan Robinson and Doug McDermott in the post game interview.

Thanks, DB!

I'm ready for Huff to be on the 15 man roster.

Apparently, we have him signed to a two-year, two-way deal, which is unusual. I like it.
