Been thinking about how many top 5 finishes a lot of players got in the MVP race and how many actually won. I find some of these to be really strange.
KAJ - 6 out of 15
LBJ - 4 out of 13
Russell - 5 out of 11
Kobe - 1 out of 11 !!
Jordan - 5 out of 10
Wilt - 4 out of 10
Magic - 3 out of 9
Bird - 3 out of 9
Duncan - 2 out of 9
Malone - 2 out of 9
Oscar - 1 out of 9
Pettit - 2 out of 8
Shaq - 1 out of 8 !!
West - 0 out of 8 !!
Baylor - 0 out of 7 !!
Durant - 1 out of 6
Hakeem - 1 out of 6
Ewing - 0 out of 6
Moses Malone - 3 out of 5 !!
Harden - 1 out of 5
Robinson - 1 out of 5
Erving - 1 out of 5
Cowens - 1 out of 5
Barkley - 1 out of 4
Cousy - 1 out of 4

I'm not sure why you find it strange. It's not like this is a batting average or something. Just being in the top five means that you had a great season. _________________ Internet Argument Resolved |

Strange as in Kobe and Shaq combined for 2 MVP awards out of 19 top 5 finishes, whereas Nash won 2 in 3 years he was "dominant". |

That's just the luck of the draw, and timing.
In Nash's first MVP season, it was a fairly weak MVP class, and he just barely beat out Shaq.
His second MVP was the big scrum year, where 6 different players got first-place votes. The guys with the best individual seasons weren't on the best teams and vice versa. I still don't know why Nash won the scrum. By traditional voting patterns, it seems like it should have been Lebron, who came in second.
As far as Kobe and Shaq, they had a lot of second and third place finishes; they just lost out to a lot of Hall of Famers who also had great seasons -- Lebron, Duncan, Garnett, David Robinson, Nowitzski, Iverson. I wouldn't have cast my vote with the majority each of those years, but I think they were all reasonable selections.
As Hunter noted, this isn't like batting averages. There is no inherent reason why a player with a lot of top 5 finishes in the voting should win more MVPs than a player with many less top 5 finishes. You have to look at each year in a vaccum, because that's how the voters look at it. |
