3-time dunk champion Nate Robinson undergoing treatment for kidney failure
Former NBA guard Nate Robinson announced on Saturday that he has been undergoing treatment for kidney (renal) failure, a situation he has been dealing with for the last four years.
Stating that he was “never a vocal leader on the court,” Robinson stated his hope that going public with his diagnosis can help others in a similar situation.
Selected by the Suns with the 21st overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, Robinson played for eight teams over the course of his 11 seasons in the league. He’s best known for his All-Star Weekend exploits, becoming the first player in league history to win the Slam Dunk Contest on three separate occasions (2006, 2009, and 2010).
Robinson is also one of four players to win back-to-back slam dunk titles, with Michael Jordan (1987, 1988), Jason Richardson (2002, 2003), and Zach LaVine (2009, 2010) being the others.
Since completing his NBA career after two games with the Pelicans during the 2015-16 season, Robinson has branched out into other sports. The former Washington defensive back tried out for the Seahawks in 2016 and fought Jake Paul in an exhibition boxing match in 2020. |

Former Boston Celtics shooting guard Jason Terry recently gave a promising update on the health and mindset of fellow Celtics alum Nate Robinson. In October, Robinson revealed he’s been receiving treatment for kidney failure. Robinson last played in the NBA in 2016.
In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated’s Landon Buford, Terry gave a positive report on how Robinson is doing of late. “I spoke to Nate the other day” Terry said. “He’s in good spirits. He’s getting treatment, and hopefully one day he’ll be back healthy. That’s what we’re all praying for. He has the support from all his brothers.”
Robinson and Terry both played for the Celtics during the “Big Three” era, though their time in Boston didn’t overlap.
Robinson was with the team from 2009-2011 before a trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Terry joined the team in 2012 via free agency.
Following his NBA career, Robinson played professionally in Venezuela and Lebanon. He has also suited up in the BIG3 tournament and tried his hand at boxing.
When Robinson fell ill, he offered an update about his condition.
“I am currently undergoing treatment for Renal Kidney Failure and have been privately dealing with it for the last four years.” Robinson said in a statement. “I’m sharing this now because I want to be the voice for all those who are having trouble speaking about this illness, and come together for a greater cause—our health,”
“I was never a vocal leader on the court. I preferred to lead by example, but now it’s time for me to speak up and help all those affected by or dealing with Kidney Disease.”
Terry isn’t alone in voicing his support for Robinson. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Memphis Grizzlies vice president of basketball operations Tayshaun Prince, and others around the NBA have lent their well-wishes. |
