Stumbling on the Road... This was a winnable game had the Lakers just one of LeBron or AD.

The Lakers briefly led in this one before the Nets rattled off a 16-0 run early on. The Lakers went scoreless for nearly 5 minutes before Russ banked in a three.

In the second quarter they would fall back further by 19 and force a timeout. They’d cut it to as low as 10 in the second quarter despite all that.

Down 12 at the half, the Lakers came out with a strong third quarter. They held the Nets scoreless for more than 3 minutes early in the third quarter and cut the lead to 1 off some offensive work from Bryant and Brown. They would take the lead on And-1 corner three by Schröder a few seconds later -- a 14-0 Laker run.

The Lakers had a 6-point lead as Russ teamed up with Gabriel for a few scores with 3 minutes left. Gabriel scored 9 straight before a timeout came. The chemistry between those two has grown all season, but Gabriel hasn’t found minutes of late.

The Laker lead would peak at 7 before things would fall apart to close the third quarter. The Nets rattled off a 10-0 run in under 2 minutes and the Lakers would trail by 3.

In the fourth, an uber small lineup with Bryant and four guards would get beat up to start the fourth quarter. They’d trim the lead some before a series of empty possessions by Russ had the Lakers deep in the hole again. They fell 121-104.

Bryant -- -- He was unable to control the interior early in that fourth quarter when we went to the ultra small lineup around him. He gave up a big putback dunk and had guys scoring over him, as well. When your PF is Lonnie Walker, I can’t put it all on Bryant. But he doesn’t play particularly big on the defensive end. It was essential he did then. He had 8 points on 3-4 shooting in the first half. He’d knock down a three and throw in a couple of strong finishes around the rim in the second half to lead the Lakers with 18 points. I’m guessing we want to go with an ultra floor spacing lineup and see if we could rattle off some points. But, predictably, just no defense. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 307 from the line to go with 9 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +1.

Schröder -- -- He’s played pretty strong when we’ve been undermanned this season. But he made just 2-15 tonight. We needed that big game from him to hang with the Nets. He actually led the team with a +4, but maybe that was mostly by not making any turnovers on his 5 assists (Russ had 10 assists but a sloppy 6 turnovers). The guard play left a lot to be desired tonight. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-15 shooting (1-4 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +4.

Hachimura -- -- A bit more aggressive in this one and playing with a little more freedom. He had 7 points on 3-9 shooting in the first half. He tipped in a missed drive from Pat Bev. He iso’d and buried a turnaround at the elbow. This is the kind of play that will come in especially useful late in the shotclocks when sets get busted. He can go and get a reasonable shot with that turnaround just about anytime he needs to create. He worked the post on iso, facing up, attacking middle then drop stepping for the scores. In the second half, he sank a corner three. He had a nice change of directions between the legs on the dribble to draw FTs. And, lastly, he scored a layup on the roll with Russ. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-13 shooting (1-2 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnovers in 28 minutes. He was a -11.

Brown -- -- He played big tonight. Great job hitting the boards tonight at both the SF and PF spots. He’s been really making an effort on the glass in the past several games and it came together tonight when he pulled down 17. A few of those were keeping missed freethrows alive, tapping those out to teammates. He buried a couple of threes and also swished a step-back jumper on iso along the baseline. In the second half, he had a sweet feed off the dribble to Bryant rolling to the hoop for a dunk. Excellent effort tonight. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (2-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 17 boards (7 offensive), 4 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +13.

Beverley -- -- He’d hit a late three for his only make from the perimeter. Our starting guards were a combined 3-23 shooting. Ugly. A lot of yapping from Bev as usual on D, but mostly seemed in fun. No real bite in the dog, though, in this one. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-8 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +1.

Westbrook -- -- He passed Gary Payton for 10th all time in assists tonight. He tied him in the second quarter on a kickout in transition to Brown for a three, then passed him on the next trip down on a drive and dish to Bryant for a dunk. He led all Laker scorers with 11 points, 4 boards and 5 assists in the first half. Really good stretch in the third between him and Gabriel. Russ set the table and Gabriel finished on multiple possession in a row. That helped the Lakers take their biggest lead. There were a couple of stretches in this game where no one else touched the ball for multiple trips down the court in a row and bad things usually happened as a result. He did sink a three in the fourth to cut the lead to 7 points with 5 boards left. He then had a turnover on the next possession and didn’t get back in transition. He attacked and missed on the next possession. He attacked again on the next possession, this time getting fouled, but he missed both FTs. So a series of plays coming up empty after not involving anyone else. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 5-15 shooting (3-6 from three, 4-7 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 6 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -10.

Walker IV -- -- He hit a couple of threes and a pull-up jumper, giving the team some much needed perimeter shooting by a guard. He had the team-low -25, however. While Walker may not provide a lot of resistance or help on D at times, we put him in a crazy small ball lineup where I think either he or Russ was the PF to start the fourth quarter. Just a dumb lineup and the Lakers got chewed up. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-9 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -25.

Gabriel -- -- Great stretch between him and Russ late in the third quarter. They worked the two man game or Russ would just find him in the paint on multiple possession. Gabriel scored 9 straight for the Lakers during this stretch and they pulled out to their biggest lead of the game. That was the last glimmer of light, however, in this one. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -18.

Christie -- -- Just 8 minutes for Christie tonight. He’d make a baseline jumper after attacking off the three line. He’d also draw FTs on a change of pace drive. Defensively, he was playing maybe a little too tight on Mills at times and looked like a foul waiting to happen. With his length, he should be able to recover and not need to be in a smaller player’s jersey. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a -13.

Toscano-Anderson -- -- He had a couple offensive boards on one possession and it led to a Russ And-1. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 2 offensive boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -14.

Jones -- -- He came in for the final couple minutes of garbage time. The Stats: He had no states in 2 minutes. He was a -3.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: A poor close to the third quarter by the Lakers. They had taken back momentum in that third, pulled out to a lead with a great sequence of Gabriel/Russ action. Then saw Cam Thomas warm up and go off on them (21 points on 13 shots and a +25). Chalk up another loss.

Key Substitution: Bryant, Walker, Beverley, Russ, Schröder lineup early in that fourth. And you were tired of the three guard lineups? We were down 10 when he sat Russ for Hachimura.

Key Stats: The Lakers had one of their worst scoring quarters to start this game, just 16 points in the first. This was a very winnable game, but with their two stars resting today, no such luck. We opened poorly and closed poorly.

Maybe Ham was hoping that this would his version of a "Jokic-type" lineup - hoping that having a good offensive option (Bryant) - as oppose to Jokic - a great offensive option - would compensate for the less than stellar defensive results - lol!

This was a game that could have provided opportunities for either Walker Jr (maybe he is just getting into "basketball shape") or Schroeder to show that they can provide the needed offense. Schroeder did provide a good defensive pressure on Kyrie.

Thomas did get 17 rebounds

Westbrook - numerous good things and several bad things, wondering when we will see his great Basketball IQ in action. Westbrook does go to war in every game, it just that the team wants to win as many wars as possible

Hashimura starting to look more comfortable.

AD, LBJ, Hashimura, Gabriel and Bryant provide needed length in the front court

This was followed by a lineup stretch of Rui and four guards. I was shaking my head so much at Ham's rotations that I thought it would fall off.

just to correct you, it was Brown who got 17 rebounds, TB got 9 and probably lost 10
