Not gonna judge the Gabe injury cause he was playing below average when he got PT with us, Vando getting hurt sucks cause his defense is just so funky and irritating that he makes players confused and we are gonna miss that

Hopefully cam comes back soon to offset his loss. Our wing depth has taken a huge hit.

Adrian Wojnarowski
@wojespn

ESPN Sources with
@McTen: Lakers F Jarred Vanderbilt is expected to miss several weeks with a right foot injury. Further evaluation is expected to see if it’s an injury that might keep him out even longer.

This just sucks.

Yup one of the main reason we are a .500 team. Ham does not see the value of him causing havoc, by playing him more. He and DS was the key to our defense last year there pressure makes it hard for the offense to get comfortable. Also leads to making AR a much better defender, since he may be slow, he is active and in the right position most of the time and smart. So it leads to deflections and steal.

Coincidence he finally started and team looks better defensively in the 1st and the energy is better from the jump.

Sucks that he’s starting to get his legs back and just got hurt again like that. If he started when he came back. I believe we’ll be at least 4-5 games over .500.

I agree and don't agree. I think fundamentally the Lakers' issue isn't just that Vanderbilt is out, it's that an entire archetype of player is out. There's no Vanderbilt and there's no Cam. Who's bodying up physical star wings? There's no Vincent and there's no Cam, who's bodying up smaller guards at PoA?

So you're losing all your key weapons defensively. Then between injuries & increased offensive load, AD's defensive presence has fallen off a cliff. So he's not the guy who's single-handedly saving the defense.

With all their defensive guys out, you're left with a 2nd year PoA guy (I actually think Christie should be playing a lot more with starters), Prince as an ok wing defender, and LeBron (who is actually effective when engaged, which is almost never).

Also he was actually looking really (bleep) good the past week or two, and I say this as someone who was skeptical of his impact earlier (which in hindsight looks like a function of health). He was still a bad halfcourt offensive player, but "less bad" which matters. And then you get all the stuff on defense (which also leads to more transition points).

Darvin Ham says that Jarred Vanderbilt is still being evaluated and the Lakers will know more on his status in a day or two.

^@mad: I agree & it’s unfortunate but it’s demonstrating midfoot pathology that checks all the boxes for Lisfranc

I wanna remind folks what Vando said when he returned …and maybe just maybe, that impacted Ham’s decision some in capping his minutes within the rotation.

Per McTen (notes of the full exchange at link)

Jarred Vanderbilt played 14 minutes against the Knicks, his seventh game since returning from a left heel injury on Dec. 2nd. He told reporters he is still working through the injury but wanted to push to come back “because we have a chance … I consider us being a contender.”

Any sort of hope that this is a injury that keeps him out for a month?

Well no one knows. But it's not sounding like it if people are saying they're worried it might hold them out the whole season so yeah just gonna have to live in the uncertainty until more concrete information is available.

There is a spectrum to any injury, and the midfoot has a wide range. The worst case is when the ligaments are damaged so badly that the bones shift out of place. We know this isn't the case because it would have been visible on the xrays and they would have already announced he's having surgery. Lis franc surgery when the bones are out of place and screws are placed to hold them together is career-threatening and fortunately rare for basketball players.

The best case scenario is just a simple sprain/soreness clean MRI that you get back to playing within a few weeks when you feel better. The Woj reports say it's a "significant injury" so it's not this.

I am not a foot specialist but it makes the most sense no surgery, and you just have to wait till things heal. Put him in cast/brace for 6 weeks then re-evaluate. But feet are tricky so it's not like after 6 weeks he goes back on the court. Takes equal if not longer time to start walking, then running, cutting etc. So at February 4, playoffs start in 2.5 months it could be season-ending.

The fact they haven't announced the treatment is worrisome meaning is the damage to the ligaments so severe they are considering surgery which would be terrible. Without the chart, my guess is he's going be treated without surgery and see how he responds as it doesn't make sense to go straight to surgery unless the bones are shifted.

I always hope for the best and prepare for the worst and am glass half full! That being said, it seems best case scenario is back a week or so before playoffs if it's a significant midfoot injury.

Update on Jarred Vanderbilt from the Lakers:

After consultation with multiple specialists, Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt has been diagnosed with a right mid-foot sprain. He will be re-evaluated by team doctors in approximately 3-4 weeks.

It doesn’t sound like a tear and it appears surgery is not immediately needed but yeah I still don’t have a lot of hope he plays again this year.
