A Full Lineup and a W... The 30th different starting lineup for the Lakers (second most in the league is 25) -- LeBron/AD and the Timberwolves, basically. It worked well.
The Lakers got off to a 12-2 start and led by as many as 15 early on before the Pelicans would catch back up to them by halftime.
This game would have been a blowout earlier had the Lakers not missed a season-high 14 freethrows. They were dominating on both ends, but didn’t quite have the lead to prove it.
This team looked like they were having fun tonight. There were no glaring problems. The culture on the team looked like it was in a much better place for the guys on the court. And once they started to pull away from the Pelicans late in that third and early in the fourth, there was a feeling of the potential to this team.
"Sky's the limit," Ham said after.
AD would finish with 28, Bron with 21, Russell with 21 and the Lakers would take the 120-102 win over the Pelicans.
Asked about how much fun the team looked like it was having now the Bron and Bamba have joined the new guys, Ham said, “It’s huge. When your mind and spirit is right, your body usually follows.”
Hopefully, the Lakers body stays healthy and the team strings together wins coming out of the All Star break. They need to build momentum and do it fast.
LeBron -- -- The dynamic changes pretty dramatically once he gets in the mix with everyone. The first few minutes of this game, the starters were playing loose. AD had space to finish. Bron had shooters around him. Something we haven’t highlighted too much, but LBJ is one of the best cutters in the league. With more attention drawn by others, this opens more opportunity for him on off-ball movement. Reaves found him cutting for an And-1 layup. Russell is already seeing him. It just looks like a smarter offense all around with Bron now in the mix and some high IQ ballers around him. Defensively, Vando’s energy and AD’s anchoring gave him some nice support. We even saw some effort from Bron to close out strong. Put shooting, hoop IQ and energy on D around him and good things happen. It just flowed as they began to scratch the surface. They kept him on a minutes restriction tonight. Thankfully, they got some separation in that fourth to run away with it. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-14 shooting (0-5 from three, 7-10 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 6 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +14.
Davis -- -- The chemistry really started to shine in this one. AD working the two-man action with Bron and Russell often opened things up on the weakside. It drew a lot of gravity. Our passing to him was excellent. He had 13 on 6-9 shooting in the first half. Multiple lobs for AD in this on and they all seemed pretty easy for AD. Some good moments attacking early on the touch. He also showed a little touch in that midrange (including a 15-foot floater). Late in the game, he also battled multiple Pelicans for an offensive board and scored the And-1. Defensively, some excellent switches to challenge guys like Ingram (including a great rejection on him at the rim). Really strong anchoring. The Vando/AD combo is intriguing to me on that end of the floor. The offensive end makes it tricky, but the paint was never too crowded. Quietly, AD led the team in scoring. He had a lot of gravity off those two-man actions. This is how we want it -- guys setting him up for easy ones and at other times, AD being aggressive to pressure the rim, and AD working on that offensive glass to manufacture some points. It just looked much easier tonight. When they doubled him, some good passing, as well. Ham mentioned how the depth will allow them to have guys fresher to close games. Hopefully, that happens. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 13-17 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-5 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +18.
Russell -- -- He was having a lot of fun in this one. He was smiling and hyping up teammates. He was even getting the crowd to make some noise. Just such good energy out there, which is not something you typically think of when describing his game. Love the positivity and how well he and the group seem to be vibing. Steady game with consistent, strong impact from Russell. He had 10 points in the first half, sinking a couple of threes. The first was a catch and shoot from LeBron to start the game. The second was another catch and shoot from the AD/Bron two-man game. This is what we were hoping for -- the gravity created by LeBron opening up more catch and shoot looks for Russell. That’s the fit we didn’t have with our previous guard, both in terms of court fit and the positive vibe/culture fit. I’m loving the two-man game with AD as it improves by the game. DLo had a great no-looking lob to AD in this one. Late in the game, there was a stretch when DLo imposed himself on the game. He had a high speed attack off the three line for a layup and you could see that look in his eyes as he was heading back down to the other end of the court. He was smelling blood in the water. So next time down, you knew he was going to bomb a three. Sure enough, he pulled up in transition and buried it to force a timeout. Imposing himself on the game in addition to LBJ/AD gave us flashes of what this team could be. Keep that up. Super efficient tonight with 21 on 12 shots. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 5-12 shooting (3-5 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +18.
Vanderbilt -- -- Sliding him into the starting lineup to match up with BI, that presents a little challenge with AD/Vando not giving you some floor spacing. So we also added Beasley in the mix. But watching him off ball in this one with that unit, it looked like there was a healthy amount of intention in how he was used. They put him in the dunker spot a lot. You have to stick with him or he’ll feast on the offensive boards or teammates finding. There was an ATO the Lakers ran with the ball in AD’s hands in the high post. Russell circled around Vando and his defender under the hoop. He took the pass and scored in the paint. So Vando stayed in the dunker spot in that play, his man had to stay home and DLo ended up with an easy one. There was another play where BI tried to leave him and zone up. The Lakers moved the ball well, made the D make decisions (protect the three or the paint), they chose to challenge the three. We then found Vando under the hoop for a score. Defensively, he made BI work. I think he’s probably had better defensive games against BI, but he made some things happen. He picked up BI’s fifth foul taking an elbow as Ingram tried to clear him out. His best play was saving the team after they made a bad sideline out of bounds pass that was picked off. He hustled back and rejected the layup attempt off glass to get the stop. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-3 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, block, 1 turnover and 1 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +10.
Beasley -- -- His numbers might have been a little better, but they waived off a three he made as the defender fouled AD trying to get around the screen. Some good passing early on in this one. He worked a two-man game with AD and then lobbed to him. He found Vando for a dunk. Scoring wise, DLo found him on a curt for a score. He hit a pull-up three on a DHO in early offense as AD brought the ball up. He also swished a three trailing the break. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-9 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +15.
Schröder -- -- We put him on the bench, sliding more shooting around Bron in the starting unit. We had Vando on BI, so you needed that. Ham said it was about trying to create as much balance as they could. He mentioned Schröder could still finish games, but just having balance was key. Dennis had a super easy layup in the second half attacking off a Bamba screen. With a floor spacing bigs (Bamba/Rui together), you hope that’s what you see more of for Dennis and Bron in those second units. We had more room to play with and the team just kept coming in waves tonight. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-4 shooting (1-1 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a +7.
Bamba -- -- He came in with 3:34 for AD in the first quarter. He picked up a couple fouls 2 minutes later and had to sit. We went small with Rui/Bron and instantly gave up a couple of offensive boards. So we brought him back to start the second quarter and he picked up his third foul off ball. He’d end up fouling out of his debut in the final minute. Just one of those games. Defensively, he caused a few issues for the Pelicans, blocking three shots, getting steal on a reach and forcing a couple of travels on guys having to deal with his length. I think there was also a shot that was nearly thrown over the backboard. The Lakers felt like they got some momentum with him out there late in the third quarter. He reached to steal a ball in the corner on his first stand after entering. He then shut down a BI drive where Ingram was coming for a hard finish. The crowd was buzzing on that. Laker, he’d tap out an offensive board to LeBron, who attacked off it and fed him for a dunk. He’d have a dunk on a Reaves pass earlier in the game. The jumpshot was not there for him tonight, but you can see the potential already if he’s knocking them down at a decent rate. You get that floor spacing around guys like Bron and Schröder so they can get to the rim. You make the two-man action easy. A lot of potential here to see how we can get him to blend in. It’s a great fit for him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-7 shooting (0-5 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (1 offensive), 1 assist, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 6 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -6.
Hachimura -- -- Quiet night for him as we put him on the bench in favor of Vando. Like Bamba, the perimeter shot wasn’t falling. He missed from three. He got in the post for a layup when we found him on a high-low over the fronting defender. He later attacked off the three line, spun in the paint and hit the short turnaround. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a +8.
Reaves -- -- Great close to the third quarter from Reaves. He sank an And-1 three with the shotclock running out and the game clock at 9. He’d then draw a foul for FTs with 0.2 left. IN the fourth, he threaded a nice pass to Bron for an And-1 layup. He had another great pass in the first quarter and a guard attacked, drew D and hit Reaves on the move. Reaves saw Bamba coming and made the instant decision that he would have a better chance at finishing and that led to a Bamba dunk. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-2 shooting from three (2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -1.
Brown -- -- Back to the bench with Bron in the mix. He spent a little time on Ingram defensively. Some good plays on both sides. He sank a three on a pick and pop. He drilled another three at the end of the quarter, trailing the break. He also saved an outlet late in the game in transition and found AD at the rim for the finish. Defensively, he deflected a pass to force a turnover. He had another steal against BI. Good two-way minutes off the bench. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting from three to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +9.
Walker IV -- -- In for the garbage time with 3 minutes left. He’s now the odd man out and that’s the right decision. While he provides some nice athleticism, he’s just not exceptionally good at anything at either end at a high enough level. If he could just D up like a KCP or something that would make a huge difference. For now, he’s on the outside looking in if the roster stays healthy. This offseason, there doesn’t seem to be a path for his return. Only a few minutes in this one, but he got some shots off. He hit a 19-footer and scored on a layup off a crossover. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 block in 3 minutes. He was a +0.
Gabriel -- -- He missed a three in his garbage time run as we slotted him at the PF with Bamba at the C. Short garbage time run.The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -2.
Reed -- -- In for garbage time and he hit a three. I don’t even remember it. He did have an offensive board I had a note on. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 board in 3 minutes. He was a +0.
Ham -- -- Key Moment: I liked the start to this one. The Lakers got into a good groove early. But that third quarter took the game away from the Pelicans. The And-1 three and then earning FTs to close the third by Reaves had momentum secured heading into the fourth.
Key Substitution: The starting lineup shift by Ham had all the starters in double digits on the positive side in the +/-. With Bron and Bamba in the mix, Lonnie no longer had a spot, Brown’s minutes were reduced, and Gabriel was also out of the rotation. Proper decisions on all of that.
Key Stats: The 22-36 (61%) from the line just messed with this game. It felt like the Lakers were dominating, but the scoreboard didn’t alway reflect it because of this. Another stat to look at was the 32 assists with just 10 turnovers. Well done. |

Ham was my MVP tonight. He had solid defensive lineups most of the game. The bizarre set with Rui as the center was terrible but short lived, and his three guard lineups were mostly rare (Troy should not be a SF... SG only, please!).
What was the result? The Pels averaged about 25 points a quarter! That is a major improvement for us, and we still put up 120 ourselves. I hope he sees this defensive result as well and stays with it. Play big and athletic, then watch the opponents miss more shots. It doesn't get more simple than that. |

Starters advanced metrics looked great.
Offense:
Lebron 128
Vandy 120
Beasley 120
DLO - 119
AD - 118
The chemistry is already there between AD/LBJ, and then you put the chemistry/experience of the 3 Wolves players being together. It is a much better lineup than we've played so far.
DLO was real solid. LBJ and DLO with AD, there's a lot of chemistry and opportunities there for AD. If they can hold their own defensively, they can get away with AD at the 5. The Pels don't have the guards to make us pay, but ideally you'd want a better defensive combo than DLO/Beasley if you're going up against elite backcourts with heavy scoring.
On another note for the other side. Talk about not being all that. The Pels started off so strong, and now there's a legit chance that they may not even want to swap picks with us. I don't know if they can for sure stay over .500. We may end up having the same or slightly better record than them by the time 82 games have been played. |

I don’t think Rui at center is a terrible idea. It can be utilized in certain matchup like the Blazers when they have Eubanks who has no ounce of offense. Instead of putting AD on him, he could have put Rui and let AD hover around the perimeter and erase the paint. It was just funny that he wants a perimeter team like Blazers to shoot 3s. But his game plan against the Pelicans was well prepared, |

Thanks DB! Great to see the Lakers are fun to watch again! Nice, dominant win. Best of all, I'm not worried in the 4th that a big lead is going to vanish.
Loved the roster adjustments for this game too.

I'm just looking for improvements on defense and defensive game-planning. If they remain healthy there's no dearth of offense on this team. Now if the defense comes about - and it has got to improve given the better balance and wing length - then this team can make some major noise. |

In the second quarter, when the Lakers lost momentum, there are definite adjustments to be made. Yes, Bamba was playing a little too fast/excited. But, more glaring than that was the continued underusage of Rui in the post. Against most other forwards, Rui has a physical advantage with his combination of size and skill. Instead of putting him in optimal positions to score, the team still has him floating around the perimeter too much. If the starting lineup against the Pels is the lineup going forward, Rui has an excellent opportunity to be the leading scorer of the bench. If utilized properly. I'm hoping this changes, soon.
Other than that, I loved what I saw from the team as a whole. And, this is the floor for our squad, when healthy. Once we get some chemistry/continuity, and established roles solidified...the sky's the limit. Beyond wins/losses, I'm truly excited to eb able to enjoy watching games again!
Lakers!
p.s. We only got a short peek of Davon Reed. But, he looked like a very capable ball handler, and his shot looked smooth. He moved well on the floor, garbage minutes aside. Also, he's a known defender. He might have been a throw in, in the Bryant deal. But, he's still youngish at 26, and may be a keeper. _________________ ZOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the icing on the cake, that was great. A good start to a long all star break. Really impressed how quickly guys are clicking, but they seem like high bbiq players so perhaps that helps |

Ham is bringing together players that already have chemistry together
AD/LBJ
DLo/Vanderbilt/Beasley
Austin/Schroeder/Rui
Mo Bamba brings a rim protector and a 3pt threat
In this crazy season, there is a strong hope that the Lakers will have a better record than OKC since that will probably mean the Lakers are in the playoffs
In the crazy NBA, Walker Jr. was often being spoken as the third best option on the Lakers. Now, he appears that getting PT will be hard to get since he doesn't play good enough D and is very streaky 3pt shooter.
If they play the Clips, a team mostly made of wings, maybe the Lakers could play this lineup
LBJ / Vanderbilt / Gabriel / AD / Beasley or Austin
Imagine if KLove signs with the Lakers - lol!!! Small ball lineup could be
KLove / Rui / Reeves / Schroeder / Vanderbilt
If the Lakers are playing the Nuggets
Jokic - AD / Murray - DLo / Porter - Vanderbilt / Gordon - LBJ / KCP - Beasley
Do the Lakers have enough time????????? |

Ok. This is what happenned. Lebron was at scoring table waiting for his last minute stint when Mo Bamba who have entered at 3:34 committ his 2nd foul at 1:17 mark. So instead Lebron entering for Troy Brown, he entered for Mo for a total time of 1:17
Now if Ham had gone with Lebron subbing for Troy leaving Mo there and Mo committs his 3rd personal, The "Fire Ham" thread will already have 20 pages!. |

Great game!
The only two negatives I saw were:
(1) Bamba's 3 point attempts (Just say NO----MO)
(2) FT shooting (which has been pretty good prior)... _________________ What does Marcellus Wallace look like?

Thanks DB.
Been burned so many times by this team for a couple seasons I'm just going to say...one step at a time.
I will say this: D'los play so far has really surprised me. Rather than the young, brash, kid trying to impress, he now comes across as much more seasoned steadying influence. Just 3 games, but its been a difference so far. No longer do I feel on pins and needles with a Russell bringing the ball up the court.
Good block building W. Now they just need to get consistent. They need a major win streak in order for us to really discuss any hopes for this season. _________________ "One thing I admire about Kuzma is his unwavering confidence. Thanks DB! Watched this game slowly from the recorder the last couple days. Savoring the new lineups and good play. So glad the Lakers are balanced and healthy at the break! All the ingredients are there for the Lakers to sustain a healthy winning streak after the break as well. |

If consistency, leadership, playoff experience, rebounding, 3pt shooting and a relationship with LBR is important - would having KLove be a good acquisition?
KLove can show and share how to effectively play with LBJ
Whose minutes would he be taking - ironically, from AD and LBJ since Ham is trying to lower the MPGs to the mid-30s
Small Ball Lineup could be with KLove
KLove, Vanderbilt, Gabriel, Reeves and DS
KLove’s defense is obviously not good, hence needs to play with energy guys that play D for short bursts
KLove, Thomas, DS, Vanderbilt and Rui |
