Post All Star Run... The Lakers haven’t had much of a problem putting up a lot of points this season. It just required some guard-heavy, poor defensive units to do that.

As a result, when they went on scoring runs, it was often met with equal (and often better) offensive output from their opponents.

Their new roster depth and balance came to play tonight. LeBron James would score just 13 points on 5-20 shooting. AD managed 12 points. D’Angelo Russell was out after the first quarter with just 2 points and a twisted ankle. Yet the Lakers rolled.

They knocked down 16-30 threes, led by Malik Beasley, who had 25 points and sank 7-11 from behind the arc. In the third quarter, when Beasley had to sit with foul trouble, Austin Reaves took the baton and dominated.

“We all just locked in,” Reaves said.

The Lakers found their separation in the third. They extended their fourth quarter lead into the high 20s. With 8 minutes left and up huge, they could shift into garbage time.

The depth of the team had eight players in double digits (again without DLo). Defensively, there was no small ball. Guys could match size for size. It made a difference as they routed the Warriors 124-111.

LeBron -- -- Wasn’t a particularly great game for LeBron. Or AD. We didn’t even half Russell for three quarters. Yes, the Warriors have some issues, but the team around LeBron is no longer swimming against the current. There’s spacing and flow. The gravity from our stars is being leveraged by others. We were up 26 and he had 13 points 5-20 shooting. Has he had a worse shooting game this season? I’m not sure. But he was at near-triple-double production. He found guys for scores and was a major hub of offense, but he was not doing much scoring-wise. Such a good sign. (Maybe he can focus a little more on defense and setting the table now, which was our winning formula in the championship run.) The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-20 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 8 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +22.

Davis -- -- He had 10 points and 9 boards in the first half. He was getting to the line at a good clip early on. He was killing me in the third quarter with some half-ass rebounding effort. The Warriors must have had 6 or 7 second chances over the course of a few minutes, including off missed FTs. That was easily the most frustrating part of this game. Kind of a buzzkill to another otherwise good night. Like Bron, AD had just 12 points in a blowout. We had eight guys in double digits. Beasley led everyone. I liked AD’s comments after that game that Beasley reminds him of KCP and that they can run some of the same stuff. AD told Beasley earlier in the day to shoot the ball when he tried to repost when they were going through some practice. KCP also had some nice chemistry in setting up AD on two-man action. I’m hoping we see these guys really build that up. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-5 shooting (6-8 from the line) to go with 12 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +5.

Russell -- -- He twisted an ankle while stepping back to inbounds a pass and running into a Warrior in the first quarter. That was it. Done for the game. He was key to triggering several baskets early on with his passing as well as allowing for better floor spacing. That meant Schröder moved into the starting PG roll and Reaves would run the backup. The Stats: He had 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists and 1 turnover in 9 minutes. He was a +4.

Beasley -- -- Malik Beastly tonight. He led the Lakers with 14 points in the first half at 5-8 (hitting 4-6 from three). He came out of the gates firing, sinking a couple of threes and hitting a midrange. When we pull a help defender strong side to our two-man action, we now have scorers weakside that can make the defense pay. He found himself wide open on one play like that as he cut to the top of the arc and had all day after the catch to knock down the easy one. On the strong side, we’ve also have him on quick-hit Chicago action in early offense, where he can come off a screen or two for a three just about any time. To open the third quarter, we just ran some straight two-man ball with him and LeBron on the first possession. Eventually, the defender was looking for that LBJ screen and Beasley just rose up and swished the corner three -- the gravity of LeBron there gave him daylight by mistake. That makes for a tough combo to deal with. He sank 7 threes tonight. We barely have him integrated and our sets weren’t really designed for shooters. We didn’t have that early on and now that we’ve shuffled the deck, it will take some tweaks but we are figuring it out quickly. “Don’t turn down nothing but your collar,” Ham told him in regards to shots. Beasley said the team is capable of a championship. “It was a statement game tonight,” he said. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 9-16 shooting (7-11 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 3 steals, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +26.

Vanderbilt -- -- Reaves on Vando: “Someone that does everything. Someone you can rely on every single night to go out and do his job and have the team’s best interest at heart.” I like that last part. Really not a lot of individual action, but just having him in the mix allows us to slot everyone at better positions. That, alone, just makes a big difference. That start of the third kind of showed that. We didn’t have D’Lo. Beasley had to sit with fouls after a couple minutes. Didn’t matter. The Lakers just had one new body with some length and the other Lakers who’ve been with the team all season just rolled. Offensively, he got a couple scores at the rim, one tipping in a missed Brown layup. The other, a dunk filing the lane when AD found him. He’d miss a corner three left alone. He also found Beasley on a kickout for a three. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +16.

Hachimura -- -- He really didn’t find any flow during the heat of the battle. But it was nice having him out there getting buckets and keeping the lead secure in that garbage time. I like getting him into those closer midrange looks in the paint. He had a flash weak to strong to take a pass from LeBron in the paint that led to a super easy look from about 10 feet out. He’s got to find his spots off the gravity of others like that. It was commented on early in the game, but he had a great seal under the hoop, using his body well to keep the defender under the rim. That was an instant foul. I’d like to see us just call some of these sequences with a little more regularity to integrate him better. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +4.

Schröder -- -- He slid into the starter spot in the second half for Russell, who did not return. He did his thing tonight. Some craftiness to get to the line. He hit his only three he took. He got into the midrange. I like seeing him off the bench with Bamba where we can go five-out. That makes things easy and gives him some more space. But there are still a lot of moving parts going on in the second unit. Bamba, Rui, sometimes another new guy. He had some moments with those guys. He found Rui in the post and on the break for scores. He hit Bamba on that pick and pop for a wide open three after drawing the help D to him. We just need to get reps and more set plays in the mix. Put Dennis in charge of organizing that and he can be the trigger man on many of those. He had a great lob to Bron on an ATO where Bron kind of parked himself in the corner while Dennis put the pressure on the rim from the other side of the court. That was all just a ploy for Bron to go back door for the alley-oop flush. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-7 shooting (1-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +12.

Bamba -- -- He buried his first three on the pick and pop, then wasn’t close on his next two in the first half. Those pick and pops make offense easy. He’d get another one later trailing the break. Throw in some freethrows and he’s got double digits. I love all that. But the 13 boards tonight? We were getting killed on the defensive glass and once he was in there, that ended that. He was just gobbling them up with that crazy wing span. That was big defensively. No blocks tonight, but he intimidated guys into turnovers. Poole got some cheap fouls on him early, but in that second half, Bamba was cleaner and his presence had guys passing (even to no one) with him on the prowl. Double-double. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-5 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +8.

Reaves -- -- We finally put shooters around … Austin Reaves. Heh. Seriously, though, we’re talking about space around Bron and AD, while we’ve got some crafty guards in Reaves and Russell, too, that can take advantage. He had to come in early for Beasley in that third quarter when he picked up a couple quick fouls. He instantly hit a three and was off to the races with multiple buckets in transition or even finding others. The Laker lead ballooned to 16 and forced a Warrior timeout. Really good at drawing FTs from those midrange pull-ups. He got both Klay and Poole on those in that third quarter. In about 4 minutes he had 11 points. He’d get more later in the third, but that was a key push. He looked pretty far removed from a second-year undrafted player in this stretch. He was dominating. Two dunks and a reverse after splitting two defenders on a drive. Mix in some shooters around him and he was setting the table, as well. “I trust him,” Ham said. This stat line is so clean. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-6 shooting (1-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +10.

Brown -- -- He had the Klay assignment quite a bit. He’s an excellent defender when he can use his length on chasing shooters or ball denial. Offensively, he sank a three early on when Russell spotted him weakside wide open. He missed a couple of layups in the first half but both Vando and AD cleaned them up. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -5.

Walker IV -- -- In for a long stretch of garbage time. Nice to see. Like Rui, he got some buckets in for us during that garbage time that allowed us to coast for that fourth quarter garbage time. He swished a couple of threes. He attacked for a layup and he hit a turnaround in the paint. Interesting that even without Russell, he was out of the rotation. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -11.

Gabriel -- -- No notes for Wenyen in his 7 minutes. It was garbage time and we played awful. He was a -15 and we still won by 13. The Stats: He had 1 foul in 7 minutes. He was a -15.

Reed -- -- He managed to draw some freethrows, but made just 1 of 4. Yuck. Honestly, I wish these were Christie’s minutes. He needs those reps. The Stats: He scored 1 point on 1-4 shooting from the line to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -11.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: I want to go with Beasley picking up two fouls early in the third quarter and having to sit. We slid Reaves into the starting lineup and he just crushed the Warriors. The lineup was AD, Vando, Bron, Reaves and Schröder. We’d sit Bron for a bit for Brown. That’s just a stingy defensive unit and we have guys better slotted at their true positions.

Key Substitution: Reaves for Beasley in that third quarter, obviously. I think he had 13 of his 17. But early in the game when we had Russell healthy, it was just notable how stacked the team is. There are waves of skilled players coming into games and we’ve got regular size out there defensively instead of the small ball, guard heavy squads. There are just a lot of good lineup combos you can go with.

Key Stats: The 16-30 from three. New team. (Warriors made 14-49 from three.) The Lakers gave up 17 offensive boards in this game. That would have killed them previously, but they smoked it from three.

Coach’s Challenge: He challenged a LeBron foul early in the fourth that didn’t seem close. Unsuccessful. Scott Foster was praising him for being a good challenger, one of the best in the league. Then said, “but you’re 0-1 with me.” Funny. Kerr would challenge midway through the quarter and also unsuccessful.

Favorite stat is the minutes Davis and Bron played. Below 30 and still a blowout.

They played sub par scoring wise but thought their defense was suffocating the warriors.

Thanks!

Feels like even with some real questions yet to be answered, we really could have something here. Hope Bron and AD are up to heavy lifting over the next three plus months.

Had you told me the Lakers top 3 scoring threats would combined for less than 30 and the Lakers still win I'd say you were completely nuts.

Yet, they did. Dubs must be shaking their head at that stat, even without Curry.

One game at a time. Hopefully d'lo fine and the team gets on a run.

This game was another affirmation that these new-look Lakers can be really good once they gel together as a unit. I really think they can be a championship contender next season if enough of the new guys plus Reaves and Schroder stick around.

Take away that franchise record setting gut punch by the 1st half Trailblazers, and we might be 4-0 since the trade.

Thanks, DB!

Much to agree with, regarding the analysis. Especially the bit about Rui. I believe the Lakers are only scratching the surface, with how potent they can be. We have at least 3 guys on our bench unit who are legit starting caliber players (Schroder, Reaves, Rui). Add to that, Lonnie has sadly become our human cigar, where earlier in the season he was our third leading scorer. Lakers fans were worried that he was another Malik Monk type situation. Now, we're so deep, he doesn't get any real playing time.

Rui is averaging around 11 pts/game with us, on mostly "pressure valve" scenarios. He VERY rarely gets plays called for him, in sweet spots. Imo, for the Lakers to take the next step, they have to find ways to get Rui more involved in the offense. Him being the primary offensive focus, for our second unit, would be lethal.

Excellent thought, DB.

Let’s hope the rationale for those guard-heavy lineups was because the coaching staff thought it was out of necessity with the old roster to keep up offensively.

I’ll chalk that one up to the Blazers NBA finals.

Yes Portland is usually a house of horrors, but they also shot at an abnormal level.

Part of it is the Lakers leaving guys open, but still even the worst defensive teams don’t get torched like that.

I only caught part of the game due to a meeting but it’s good to see them take advantage of injured opponents, earlier in the season games like that were struggles. Maybe they are developing a killer personality.

Sometimes it's as simple as having a better overall team/lineups.

Just the over all balance and fit on both ends. It's made for chemistry.

We can put together some lineups that can get after it defensively. We're younger and more active on that end. You've got to have that around LeBron as he's a low-movement defender. Defensively, we're also slotted better. Don't need smalls out there guarding above their position. We had Russ/Bev guarding bigger players and weren't very effective. Bryant couldn't stop anyone entering the paint.

Previously, we just had to have a minimum ability of shooting on the floor at all times to function, which meant playing guys who were not good at D. Or playing small ball lineups that got abused on defense. The offense numbers could look great and guys could pile up stats, but what does it matter when you are giving up 130?

We were trying to shoehorn Russ into schemes and were swimming against the current nightly. When you've got a couple of stars that need the ball, he's not the type of player you want on the floor. He doesn't do the things you need (shooting gravity, screen setting...1 screen per game?!, cutting) that help another ball dominant player. So you have to split minutes among your big guns and be very careful when those minutes overlap. Some matchups, you can get away with it, some it's just impossible. You also have to play super fast so defenses can't load up on other threats in the half court. Come playoff time when everyone is on top of their game and knows the rules for how they want to defend x, y, z, then things start to stagnate. You know longer get those mistakes that allow Russ to get downhill. It just becomes an even bigger problem just like how we took out Harden/Russ at Houston.

Now, the playbook opens up. The D improves. Coaches had their hands tied a bit. Now they need to rise to the occasion.

That Portland one was on coaching. We left marginal shooters open without really gaining advantages. We were in no man's land and didn't commit to taking anything away on the perimeter. At least take one thing away. Dame on iso...that's easy. Marginal shooters with wide open looks? Thank you very much. How about trap Dame, get the ball out of his hands and see if those other guys can beat you? Or let him do his thing and stay tight on everyone else. They just took a beating and were a deer in the headlights.

^^^ Yup, with better defensive options on the roster now, it comes down to good health and smart substitution rotations by Ham to get the best possible results. He did 'ok' yesterday, but was still killing me with the unnecessary three guard units he tried to our detriment.

We had a nice lead from a balanced squad of two guards, two forwards and a center for most of the first quarter (our defense was on point), then he went with a three guard lineup for a lot of the second quarter and the Warriors started scoring with ease or getting fouled for FTs.

We started the third quarter almost tied, but with a balanced lineup of size we shot ahead with a double digit lead fairly quickly, but as soon as Ham went back to three guards, the Warriors started getting a TON of offensive rebounds to creep closer to us again.

We finally put them in the rear view mirror once we released the balanced-size team onto the court again and coasted with reserves from the middle of the fourth to the end.
