Don't think they expected him.
Pau obviously made an impact on Jimmy's life.

From what I remember. When Pau was with the Bulls he showed a young Jimmy Butler the opera and the arts. It opened Jimmy to a lot of different parts of life and helped him learn to appreciate the arts and music.
Jimmy always appreciated Pau for that and their friendship grew. |

| One thing I've always respected about him is that doesn't give two (bleep) about the regular season, stats, accolades or all-star games, but always performs in the playoffs. He has some kind of switch that allows him to go supernova in the postseason. Only Steph was better than him last postseason, but the dude played out of his mind. |

I remember talking to Yinoma that offseason about going after Jimmy over Kyrie. We talked age and minutes played, etc.
Google search "Jimmy Butler Lakers" date the search in 2019. Chris Haynes, Winded Horse (Windhorst), Markazi. I'm not even gonna bring up the reporters on podcasts who talked about it.

Staying in the KL sweepstakes forced the Clippers to overpay for PG13. Still, with Jimmy B instead of Danny Green & KCP, I think we win it all. The following year we'd lose Kuz and THT, but still in the mix.
