Legendary Louisville Men’s Basketball Coach Denny Crum Dies at 86
Story by Daniel Chavkin • 4h ago

Denny Crum, the former hall of fame Louisville men’s basketball coach, has died at the age of 86, the school announced on Monday.

Crum spent 30 years coaching Louisville, leading the Cardinals to two NCAA championships in 1980 and ’86, making him one of 14 coaches with at least two titles. He finished his coaching career with a 675–295 record in 970 games, all of which are most in school history, and six Final Four appearances.

In his 30 years at Louisville (1971 to 2001), Crum made 23 NCAA tournaments and guided the program while it was in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Metro Conference and Conference-USA. Crum won 15 regular season titles within the MVC and Metro Conference and 11 conference tournament titles in the Metro during his career.

After he retired, Crum worked as a special assistant at Louisville and spent time co-hosting a radio show. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994, and Louisville named its court after him in ’07.
