But you also have to think how many good NBA rotational players are gradually developed from the G League. It doesn’t seem like many. Most guys immediately show something or they never pan out.
|
Austin Reaves did pretty good. |
He was good but he also showed something his first year. He started 19 games for the LAKERS. It doesn’t seem like the Lakers have ever had a guy that doesn’t play at all his rookie year but stays in the g league, and then gradually becomes a rotation piece in years 2-4. That’s why guys like Castleton, Bronny, Lewis, JHS seem like wastes at this point |
How much of that is a product of giving up on guys too early? In the past couple of years we've cut guys like Scottie Pippen Jr and Jay Huff from two-way contracts. Not saying both make an NBA roster right now, but they've clearly done well in this year's summer league and are on a path. Pippen put up pretty good numbers in real NBA games in the last quarter of last season. He's only 2 years older than JHS.
The reality is that the overwhelming majority of these guys will never make it, but if you're cutting them off after one season you're just taking yourself out of the equation for any potential upside. Pippen's numbers in 21 NBA games last season were significantly better than his summer league numbers in 2022. "Showing something" is a vague standard. Pippen in SPL 2022 in 23mpg averaged 12ppg on 36% shooting and 22% from 3. 68% from the line. 5 assists, but 3 turnovers per game. Was that showing something? Hindsight is 20/20, but seems like if we just developed him for two years we'd have a player who is clearly better than JHS right now, only 2 years older, and a fraction of the price. Isn't this the problem we're trying to fix now by investing in guys longer term? |

Lewis has the size and time to develop some tools if he's into it. There is still a road ahead for him but he has a little something to work with; I hope he buys in because he's not ready for the big show. He could simply be a late bloomer. _________________ Lakers need to build a freaking team ! |

Not sure if its possible but if his bball IQ doesnt raise by a factor of 10x soon then he'll be playing in China next year |
Unfortunately we gave him a contract for another year
Salary filler! Salary filler! |
A whopping $100K guaranteed next year. Stretch him to reduce it to 20K per year. |
Oh neat I didn't realize, thanks |
It's a surprisingly "good" contract for Rob. Control up to 4 years, but really only 2 years of investment on day 1. |

Thought we were talking about undrafted players. Guys like Rudy Gobert and Jalen Green have G League experience. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points." |

He's still a decent player but people were expecting just a little more polish and leadership from him.
The athleticism effort is there but he hasn't quite gotten there yet. His BBIQ is average and he needs more work.
Through hard work and training he may still develop into a solid role player. |

Yeah, he's not ready. It's important for him to keep at it, build his body,
decision making, scoring, etc.
G-league is where he needs to get his reps in... I wish him well, he has
a ways to go. _________________ Lakers need to build a freaking team ! |

I feel the same way, the Lakers scouting is horrible. GG and Trayce Jackson-Davis should have been Lakers. Should have traded Reaves for DJM. |

To be fair at the time Lewis seemed like a solid swing. Was projected in late teens by some. _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' Obviously they matter, that's why the Lakers spent like $5M to buy the pick for Max Lewis. Scouts liked Lewis, people on LG liked Lewis. He didn't pan out probably because his BBIQ is in the single digits and he didn't develop like you'd hoped. You can't know these things a priori. I'd have liked TJD as well (GG Jackson was not on my radar) but the second round is a crapshoot. It seems to have worked out with Christie. Not with Lewis. Anyone remember Anthony Brown? But we drafted Clarkson too.
And since you seem so bitter about it... there's a difference between #40 and the 4th-to-last draft pick (and to be fair McCuellar who went #56 was on my radar, but only because of Mike -at- LG who also liked Bronny so) |

I’ve been told constantly the pick didn’t matter. If you want to counter their arguments take it up with them. My point has always been that all of this matters. Winning around the margins has never been more important and we keep failing in that regard. They keep blowing picks on these long shot projects while they tell us winning is their priority. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

This team lacks size and athleticism on the wing and at C.
Whitmore and TJD would have solved those issues all while being young and cost controlled.
Whitmore should have been easy pick just as Knecht was BPA.
TJD
Whitmore
Knecht
Christie
would have been a solid young core and would have been along the lines of the Lakers drafting back around 2018 (Kuzma, Hart, Zubac etc) _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' My guess is that that's the number Rob has penciled in for Max at this point.
Side note, Bronny has a similar clause for his 3rd year salary, except his guarantee is $1.3 million. |

TJD is the same size as Christian Wood and Jaxson Hayes is bigger than him.
Cam Whitmore is more or less the same size as Rui Hachimura and Dalton Knecht. And LeBron is far bigger. So no, they wouldn't have done anything about the 'size' issue if you think having Wood and Hayes and Hachimura still keeps us with a 'size issue' when they're bigger than the 2 you just mentioned. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

Side by side, Rui seems to be bigger than LeBron (although he’s kinda slimmer this yr) _________________ “The main goal for the Lakers is to win a championship. All I care about, all we care about, is to raise another banner in the rafters.“ |

TJD has beef/strength/strong core. Something neither Hayes or Wood has.
Whitmore would have been more of a solution for the lack of athleticism issue on this roster with below average athleticism players in Rui, Reaves, DLO etc. Knecht a TBD decided there. He has good agility test but will it translate. _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' Looked better in G-League Game 1, which is better than he looked last year in G-League, it's about can he actually translate it at the NBA level. He was below average last season in the G-League, this season he's at least started it on a good note. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

Looks promising tonight… He needs to be more consistent. Once that happen, I won’t be surprise if he some how sneaks in to some spot up rotation minutes this season. One thing with Lewis is you can’t ignore his size and athleticism. He does fit a bill that the Lakers are needing right now. |

I was surprised how well Maxwell Lewis played in game 1. He looked like one of four players who deserve consideration should the need arise, alongside Olivari of course, Traore surprised me, and Koloko held his own out there too.
Gotta agree on the consistency element, this is just game 1, but a solid start for him. |
