I can easily see a Christie-like progression for this kid from year 1 to year 2. He's got the raw tools, just needs to put the work in.

He's got a flair to his game. You can see that Kobe was his favorite player.

Reporting on second-round pick Maxwell Lewis' 4-year contract with the Lakers, per sources:

First two years are fully guaranteed with salaries around $1.1 million for 2023-24 and $1.4 million for 2024-25.

Partially guaranteed ($100K) for 2025-26 and a team option for 2026-27.

He's like a pokemon. The evolution from games 1 and 2 to 3 and 4 is night and day. Can't wait to see him after the all-star break. I'll tune in to his g-league games.

That's a hell of a contract.

Indeed it is. I can see him being a good rotation player by Year 3.

His athleticism pops. I've been impressed with is on-ball defense, and it appears he's already improved his off-ball defense, which was atrocious during the California Classic. Given the way the coaching staff fixed Max Christie's shot form, I'm hopeful they can do the same with Lewis. Tightening up that shot pocket will make it easier for him to create a jump shot off the dribble.

So the rest of the mle is used on Lewis, and tax is avoided. GOOD.

Vas! This true? No MLE left for buyout, just prorated min?

^@LT & @Gov…it does look like it’s the SRE that was used, meaning MLexis will be a 1.1m cap hit towards the tax math. Remember, draft picks do not count as a 2yr+ seasoned vet (ie 2m) cap hit.

That would leave about 1.9m if our ntpMLE to still use in free agency to either sign a 14th now, or find a buyout candidate later in Feb. We can either go the vet min exception (VME) route and save our MLE remainder for the buyout market later or go ahead and use the MLE remainder now. Unlike the VME, the MLE will not immediately prorate down to begin the season. Instead, it will begin to prorate down beginning Jan 10th.

Also whether we use the VME or MLE on a guy like Castleton, dude will make the rookie min (1.1m), but will be seen as a 2m cap hit towards tax math. It doesn’t matter how many seasons our vet has played…if dude is signed to our 14th spot before the season, 2m (prorated if not fully guaranteed) will apply to our tax calculations.

Currently at 13 rostered, we are about 1.5m away from the 165.3m tax line. We must roster a 14th too since a team can only go 2 weeks at a time during the season at getting away in rostering only 13.

Maxwell Lewis signed with the Los Angeles Lakers via the Second Round Pick Exception, a league source told @spotrac.

First two seasons are fully guaranteed. Third season is partially guaranteed, with a late-June full guarantee date. Final season is a team option & non-guaranteed.

1.1M is the minimum for rookies this year. I thought if teams are to use sre, they need to pay more. No?

The remaining mle, 1.9M, is only larger than the minimum for rookie or one-year experience. It is useless if they want to sign someone of 2 years of experience or more.

Since Castleton was undrafted, could he get part of the remaining 1.9m MLE and get paid more than what Max L as a 2nd rounder is getting?

@LT: for this salary cap season, the SRE can be up to 1.8m starting on a 3 year deal or up to 2m on a 4 year deal. The minimum payed for each of those yearly deals is the rookie minimum, ie 1.1m. When it comes to tax math, since these players were drafted, they’d count as whatever their annual was signed to and wouldn’t be rounded up to the vet min amount of a 2+ seasoned player, ie 2m.

You are correct tho that the remainder of our ntpMLE, 1.9m, is insufficient in offering up a deal to a 2+ year seasoned vet. So only players with zero (aka a rookie) or 1 year if service can be had by the remaining MLE to start the season.

However, the vet min exception begins to prorate down from the jump as the season progresses. Meanwhile the MLEs do not begin to prorate down till Jan 10th. So roughly 9 days into the regular season, our 1.9m remaining from the MLE could he used on 2+ year seasoned vets.

And to that point, @Yi, since Castleton is a rookie we would only need 1.1m of our 1.9m remaining to offer him a deal before the season starts. However, if we chose to, we could offer the entire remaining amount to him as well or to lock up a 1 year seasoned vet to.

But no matter who we sign to our 14th roster spot, they will count as a 2+ year seasoned vet in tax math, ie 2m, since these players were undrafted free agents. So even if we get Castleton on 1.1m rookie min deal either via our MLE or the VME, dude would count as 2m (proration, if signed during season) towards the tax line.

Hope that clears it up for everybody.

Maxwell Lewis played 19 minutes and failed to score. Plus/minus -11.
He was totally Missing In Action v Celts.
Quote:
Dancing Barry
Lewis -- -- A big nothing game from Max today. Really lost outthere. His best play was probably a drive and dish to Fudge who choked the dunk. But really no presence in this one.
He missed his only three and a leaner off a screen. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -11.

Lewis seems passive out there. He just stands in the corner and doesn't try to get open or move unless they run something specifically for him.

Would love to see that change and have him force the action a little on offense.
