Ron Harper won 3 rings for the Bulls but was strategic in the Lakers' winning their first and strategic wings for the Kobe/Shaq era

Robert (Big Shot) Horry was strategic in the latter rings - obviously

Literally no third ring if not for that Horry buzzer beater vs the Kings. Possibly still a first ring without Harper.

It was Game 4 to go up 3-1.

I think Horry was more instrumental overall. Harper contributed to the first ring and was a shell of his former self by the 2nd ring (replaced by Fisher in the starting lineup). Meanwhile Horry played significant minutes for all 3 rings, had more memorable/clutch shots (Buzzerbeater vs Kings, Series-clencher vs Blazers, Dagger vs Sixers, etc.) and bulked up to play stretch Power Forward and was often left on an island defending against a gauntlet of Western Conference PF's (Duncan, Rasheed, Webber, etc.). It shredded his knees and he had no legs on his jumpshot by the time we were going for a 4peat in 2003.

Even with all that he STILL ALMOST hit a series-changing 3 that went in and out vs the Spurs which might've been the difference between failing to 4peat or succeeding.

Harper basically coached the Triangle from the floor in 99-00, and helped change the locker room culture from silly to focused. He was the exact PG we needed, even on one leg.

Horry wasn't really "clutch" until the 00-01 playoffs.

Horry wins this one easily, imho.

Harper was only a Laker for the last two years of his career. He was a big contributor to the 99-00 ring. The following year, he only played half a season because of injuries, only logged 6 playoff games, and then retired.

Horry played 7 years as a Laker and was a key player on 3 ring teams.

If you want to compare Harper in 99-00 against Horry in this single best Laker season and ask who was more important, it's a discussion. For their overall Lakers careers, it isn't.

Harper was an old man who was already many years past his prime. This was evidenced by his reduced role in each of those championship years. Horry had a constant and consistent role throughout the 3 peat years.

Horry was important for several teams winning rings, he knew how to fit in.

Respectfully submit that if Harper didn’t do what he did, the Shaq/Kobe Era could have gone in a different direction and the opportunities for Horry to contribute wouldn’t have existed

Shaq and Kobe didn’t know how to win rings at that time

Horry definitely continued the Shaq/Kobe Legacy, maybe with more heroics. Harper was there at a strategic crossroad and time

They would have faced an injured mavs team and had a rematch with the Nets... definitely would have been 4 in a row with a chance at 5 in a row after signing GP and Malone

This. They put in an offense that neither Shaq nor Kobe liked. Harper made it work.

It was obviously Mike Penberthy, the best 3pt shooter in NBA 2k2.

Harper was the one that confirmed that Phil's "Blueprint" (aka The Triangle) was the way to championships because they had all the talent

Ron Harper got Shaq/Kobe over the "Jonah Complex" (phrase that Kenrick Perkins used, for another purpose, on the NBA Today program)
-
The Jonah complex is the fear of success or the fear of being one's best. This fear prevents self-actualization, or the realization of one's own potential. It is the fear of one's own greatness, the evasion of one's destiny, or the avoidance of exercising one's talents.

Did Robert Horry hit an amazing shot against the Kings - Yes. Game allowed the Lakers to continue their dynasty!

You are correct. Harper was important and very valuable. But Robert Horry is a Lakers legend.

It's not even close.

Hard to say. Rick Fox is a massively underrated player. Fischer had the ability to step up at just the right time over and over.

Grant is way too low. You were able to single cover Sheed, Duncan, and Webber with Horace. And you were able to rest Shaq for 7-10 minutes by playing Grant and Horry together. His absence showed in 02 and 03.
