Not much interest (other than the thread dedicated to Team USA) so I decided to start a topic. The WC commenced yesterday and we've already had the first major surprise: Canada's 30-point victory over France.

Anyone planning to watch the games? Our team has their first matchup in 20 minutes against the oldest team on the tourney - Venezuela. Since our frontline has gotten a bit thin because of injuries to two key players, I am not epecting much, but with Luka on your team you never know.

I will As I can. In this first round a lot of the games - not just team USA - start in super early in the morning so I won't be watching those. But as the tournament progresses I will definitely be watching. I just watched a bunch of highlights on SportsCenter looks like a bunch of fun basketball took place already.

With Luka, will always at least see highlights. I understand he's in the best shape since he's been in NBA. Plus, have false hope that he'll someday play for us while still a top player.

Here you go:

He had a cool 37/7/6, but we sucked donkey balls on D and let Venezuela hit 16 threes (9 in the first quarter alone!). I don't see this team advancing bast the second round, because our group crosses with the group with Australia and Germany.

Watched USA-NZL also and boy, does our Reaves deal look sweeter by the minute.

Doncic is the best player in the tournament, but the offense seems to be too centered around him. Can that style be successful at this stage? Hoping they go far, because he showed up for his country and we see other NBA stars take summers off. So hope he gets rewarded for it

The offense is definitely too Luka-centered and I don't think they can go far. But there does not appear to be another way to orchestrate our offense. The only other NBA player (Vlatko Cancar of the Nuggets) had a serious knee injury during the preparation games and another solid PF that was key to our 2017 European championship also suffered a season-ending injury during our national title games in June. So you have a roster filled with average to below-average players that play in suspect leagues (our backup center, for example, plays in the 2nd Japanese league) and one megastar in Luka. The wheels simply fall off when he sits, at least most of the time and against solid competition.

Games like that Latvia/France game are exactly what makes FIBA so much fun.

Yup. Although it was more of a complete meltdown by France, than the stellar game by the Latvians. France pretty much controlled the game through 3 quarters, leading by 12 entering the 4th. Then the arguable De Colo ejection completely turned the momentum and they simply collapsed. Good W for Latvia though, they were supposed to be the outsider of the group, but are now headed to the second round.

Brazil/Canada game enjoyable thus far

I had no idea that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is from Canada until this FIBA started. And I just heard her say another name I recognized. Oh Olynyk. So yeah Canada is looking good. But Brazil is right there for now.

EDIT: Oh wow I just realize this is the fourth quarter with Canada having 57 points. What are they doing today?! all the top teams coming out ti-ti today

Ok and Lou Dort too. They have a real team clearly I've been asleep. But anyways speaking of being asleep this very good team is about to lose to Brazil if they don't get it together lol

Woooohooo, Slovenia totally outplayed Australia today, leading practically from start to finish. Despite iffy officiating (Luka was saddled with 4 fouls with 8 mintues to play in the 3rd). Quarterfinals regardless of the outcome vs. Germany on Sunday. So happy right not.

With a 5'10'' player going straight past Brooks for two layups in the final minute. Incredible.

Also Latvia defeated Spain for another upset.

Oh wow. I love Spain. But I'm kinda feeling how Latvia are feeling themselves

Oh wait - CAN and Spain face each other next right? That should be a really good game then.

Yeah, Latvia has the whole Cinderella story vibe, so I'm rooting for them as well. Span and Canada play on Sunday, and every team in the group has a 3-1 score so we're in for a treat.

ESPN2 and ESPN+

Which if you're like me and you're a Spectrum Customer you're gonna have to do ESPN+ because Spectrum and ESPN aren't on the same page right now.

That team is pretty loaded and Jamal Murray and Wiggins aren't even playing.

Uhh, a total spanking at the hands of Germany. Slovenia started on fire and got what they wanted in the 1st Q. We had a 25-11 lead and the Germans looked completely lost. I can't really pinpoint the exact reason for what transpired in the following three quarters, but I hope our boys flush this one down the toilet and bring their A game on Wednesday against Canada.

Yes I need to go back and watch that one. I heard Schrö and Co went off.

SLO vs CAN should be a really good game
