Couldn’t even get a hit of the hitter pitching. Then again nobody did. 1.2 IP no hits for Knizner.

Im all for Taylor getting mostly benched this year and used as a pinch runner/defensive utility replacement in blowout games. Try again next year which will likely be Taylor's last year with a fresh outlook and start.

Damn I missed a good one. I turned it off after Mookie's base clearing double. Figured the game was over by then and didn't think we were going to score any more.

Feels like Freddie hasn't gotten hot at any point this year. He says he hasn't felt great at the plate since late last year. Yet you look at the stats, we're now 68 games in, and he's hitting .297 with an .899 OPS lol. That's how great this guy is. Offense is down significantly this year leaguewide, and if this is how Freddie slumps, I mean, come on. Dude just shows up to the post every day and even his B game, let's say, is good for the 14th-best OPS in the NL.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring superutilityman Cavan Biggio in a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays, sources tell ESPN.

Biggio, 29, was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last week. He’s hitting .200/.323/.291 this year and .227/.343/.382 for his career.

That one game yesterday made us the highest scoring team in the league. Funny because it feels like our offense has been ass for awhile.

Our run differential is now 4th:

Quote:
1) NYY +122
2) PHI +111
3) BAL +108
4) LAD +105

5) CLE +92

6) KC +65
7) MIL +60

8) ATL +27
9) BOS +27
10) SD +25

i cringe every time i see the word utilityman, when can the Dodgers just get someone who's specialize in one position and is good at it. so Bigio is another Keki/Rojas/Taylor/Lux?

Well you’re talking starter vs bench.

Bench players should be utility players (except for the catcher).

You only get 3 (minus the catcher). Ideally you want them covering as many positions as possible to give multiple starters days off.

More on the trade:

Quote:
Biggio has one season of club control beyond this year and will be eligible for free agency after 2025.

He has spent most of his career at second base but has played first, third and right field as well this season.
…..

In the deal, the Blue Jays will receive right-handed reliever Braydon Fisher, who has split his time this season between Double-A and Triple-A, sources said.

Fisher, 23, was a fourth-round pick in 2018 and has struck out 30 hitters and walked 15 in 19 innings while posting a 5.68 ERA this season.

Wonder if he goes to AAA or gets put on the MLB roster.

Right now, our 4 bench players are:

Quote:
1) Rojas
2) Barnes
3) CT3 or Miguel Vargas
4) Kike

- They could send Vargas back down, keep starting Kike at 3B n add Biggio to the 26 man roster (most likely)

- Or, they finally decided to DFA CT3 and picked up Biggio as his replacement for now.

- Or, Biggio goes to AAA (not even sure if it’s possible).

Dodgers reddit thinks Vargas goes back to AAA.

Here’s one comment on his D in LF so far:

Quote:
I would feel bad except he has been so useless defensively every stint he has had with us.

Last season he was AWFUL at second. So they move him to LF permanently in minors and here this season. I didn’t watch him play in minors at all this season so maybe he was okay there but here he was obviously a complete liability in LF.

Idk his work ethic, but he needs to take 200 fly balls every single day just like Mookie and Muncy take hundreds of grounders.

Another opinion on Twitter:

Quote:
Cody Snavely (Canelo)
@SnavelyCody6

With Biggio being acquired by the #Dodgers I imagine they will either move Joe Kelly or Ryan Braiser to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man and then send Miguel Vargas back to Triple-A @DodgersBeat @BleedLosPodcast

My guess is we have no replacement for Muncy at 3B other than Kike.

CT3 also plays there but Im guessing he stinks there (purely guessing).

Muncy might be out for awhile.

Sucks this dude keeps on battling injuries the last few years.

Favorite or best?

I think peak CT3 was a monster for us. Dude was basically a starter.

Muncy spoke to Foul Territory on Tuesday and provided another unfortunate injury update.

Jun 11, 2024

Quote:
“We’re hanging in there,” Muncy said.

“Being hurt is probably the worst thing ever. Not progressing as fast as I would like, but with an oblique, it’s just you have to give it time, there’s nothing you could really do.

I think an oblique is possibly the worst position player injury you could have because there’s nothing you could do to strengthen it, help it get better, or help it heal quickly. You just have to sit there and wait.”

Oblique injuries are always tricky, as some could heal in a couple weeks and some could take months. While the Dodgers expressed initial optimism in Muncy’s timetable, unfortunately, he just hasn’t bounced back.

Muncy was initially expected to take a minimum stint on the injured list, but just hasn’t gotten better. It’s now been almost a month since Muncy last played, and he remains without a timetable for a return.

…..

The Dodgers went 25-15 when Muncy was in the lineup this season, and averaged 5.4 runs per game. When Muncy isn’t in the lineup, the Dodgers have gone 16-11 and have averaged just 4.2 runs per game.

Enrique Hernandez has been operating as Los Angeles' primary third baseman in the meantime and will likely continue to fill that role.

Conflicting news about Muncy:

Quote:
David Vassegh
@THEREAL_DV

Max Muncy is taking ground balls and throwing across the diamond. He wasn’t doing that last home stand . #Dodgers

Muncy has yet to take any swings so far through his recovery, and it could be another month before he returns to the Dodgers’ lineup.

Quote:
Muncy last played on May 15 against the San Francisco Giants. Since then, he's been doing his best to recover from the injury; however, it hasn't been smooth.

Last week, Muncy began taking dry swings and doing plyo-ball workouts. While that was a huge step forward for the lefty slugger, Muncy's latest comments are cause for concern.

I think the news that we just acquired Biggio signals that Muncy isn’t close to returning.

^ this was my first thought also. Biggio is our lefty 3b and Kike returns to the outfield and facing lefties exclusively.

I also think they want to preserve Rojas. He seems to be much better when he’s playing less games. We’ve been sending him out there more often than not ever since the Muncy injury.

Wow, didn’t even know Biggio is a lefty. If what you’re saying is true, then Biggio becomes the main 3B-man, because most starters are righties.

Wonder how’s his D at 3B vs Kike.

Let’s see if I understand what you’re proposing:

Quote:
Everyday Starters:
C: Will Smith (R)
1B: Freeman (L)
SS: Betts (R)
DH: Ohtani (L)
CF: Pages (R)

vs righty lineup:
RF: Heyward (L)
LF: Teoscar (R)
2B: Lux (L)
3B: Biggio (L)

vs lefty lineup:
RF: Teoscar (R)
LF: CT3 (R)
2B: Rojas (R)
3B: Kike (R)

Is this what you had in mind?

Confirmed: Vargas to the minors

Cavan Biggio is expected to be at Dodger Stadium and active for tonight's game, per sources

Miguel Vargas is being optioned back to the minors

Yeah, Vargas is our new Michael Busch.

Really high on them. Top 30 prospect, rakes in AAA but can’t get any playing time on the MLB roster because they are awful defensively.

I don’t know how accurate this is but, coming into the year, Miguel Vargas had 142 days of service time:

Quote:
Vargas has 142 days of major league service time, and one option year remaining, having used options in 2022 and 2023.

It takes 172 days to accumulate one full year:

Quote:
A player is deemed to have reached "one year" of Major League service upon accruing 172 days in a given year.

So he needed 30 more days to accrue 1 yr of service time.

He got called up on May 17:

Quote:
Miguel Vargas gets called back up to the Dodgers

May 17, 2024

And sent back down today on June 12th.

Sounds like less than 30 days. Sucks for him but I imagine this is service time manipulation.

He won’t get called back this yr (unless we really need him).

If we don’t, then we’ll still have 6 more years of control over Vargas starting next yr.

Yes exactly. Defensively, Jack of all trades indeed. His best position is at 2b. Questionable arm strength for third - it’s been a concern in Toronto since he got there. I don’t know if he will be better at third than Kike..although Kike has made 3b look very difficult the past week after starting out really well. At best he will marginally be better defensively at 3b over Kike.

Bat? Think Trent Grisham without the power. I’m not a fan, maybe Dodgers think they can fix him but the only thing he has going for him is the whole “he gets on base”. Good eye and takes walks. Literally no power IMO although not as weak on the ball as Lux, he still can’t ever seem to “punish” the ball. Again this is all just from my perspective of watching him over the years. Eye-test only. So maybe I am missing something.

So in the absence of Muncy to summarize at 3b:

Kike : stronger arm, more power with the bat
Biggio: maybe more range? (Maybe), takes more walks

I think to have a guy hitting in the 9 hole that can get on for Mookie is not a bad idea in theory. Again, he is also a lefty and would give us another lefty in the lineup vs righties.

He will be more “useful” than Vargas because Vargas was just rotting on the bench. He will also be much more useful than Taylor. Those are the pros, just don’t expect anything crazy or any insane splits like say the Rosario move last year.

I expect the same level of D at third, in fact maybe worse because Kike makes up for a lot of mistakes with his arm. Much better on base than Kike with the bat. Not a bad platoon to have at third. Looks like I answered my own question: I would rather have Biggio vs righties than Kike.

Once Max comes back either Cavan or Ct3 are gone. Obviously so yeah Cavan is essentially the substitute teacher until Max comes back. We could have done without him as I don’t think it’s that crazy of an addition but Vargas was just being wasted anyways so why not.

Biggio actually hit 16 homers in his rookie year in 354 at-bats. Will hit some doubles, get some walks, and hits a few more homers than I expected. I think I like this move although part of the reason why is my expectations were so low. Don’t like the really low batting average.

His power numbers so far are way down this year.

Total service time manipulation...for the team that trades for him.

In all seriousness, at least he hit for power while he was up with us. That's a good sign for his future development, although maybe he's more like a DH. Still, he's a player the White Sox could probably find time for in the infield, should we make a play for the likes of Robert/Crochet/Kopech.

And yes, Biggio has been very underwhelming. They gave up a low-level prospect though, so this is basically an extremely low-cost flier on a former top prospect whose father is a Hall of Famer. I guess they are hoping to catch lightning on the pedigree, and yeah, in the short term he should start at third against right-handed pitching.
