At least this is the last throw away start with both our aces due back very soon. At the least Shohei can now pad his stats with the pressure off the rest of the night.

The funny thing is these two are trying their best to make a case to be on the October roster. LOL.

What happened to Buehler? He used to be our Ace. Speaking of Aces, Ive been focusing on the offense a lot this year, and haven't pay much attention to the pitching staff, so who really is our Ace pitcher? Glasnow? Yamamoto? or Gonsolin?

Has to be Glasnow with Yamamoto a really really close second. Stone behind them and Kershaw behind him.

Yeah that team was special with Max and Trea Turner. I wanted them to win so bad after beating the Giants.

Welp, at least there’s a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich for tonight. If you’re in the LA area, check your CFA app sometime after the game AND before midnight. Offer expires then.

Speaking of the Angels.....

Fun Year:

- Indians one of the best hitting lineups of all time in a pitcher friendly park
- Nomo
- Dodgers two guys that finished top 5 in MVP and one of them did not even get selected to the All-Star game despite also winning the Silver Slugger (Karros)
- Angels collapse: Tony Phillips - Jim Edmonds - Tim Salmon - Chili Davis - JT Snow - Garret Anderson is a real nice 1-6 though with Langston and Finley as the top pitchers being decent.
- Braves finally win their ring
- Will they or won't they: Constant talks of Robin Ventura being traded to the Dodgers as the left-handed complement to Piazza-Karros-Mondesi

Wasn't that the year they came back from being down 2-0 to the Yankees and win the ALDS? Also the team with Randy Johnson, A Rod and Griffey Jr. Also one of my favorite player at the time Edgar Martinez.

I was living in Seattle for couple of years during that time, I worked at a dry cleaners in a city called Bellevue. One day one of our regular customer came in with a suit that had a lot of wet stain. So I said it must have been some party and she said yes it was. It turned out she was the wife of the owner of the Mariners and she brought the suit in that the owner wore during the celebration when they beat the Yankees.

Mariners were a fun team for the comeback of being like 10 1/2 games down with like a month of a season left and winning the division while keeping the Mariners in Seattle. Back then, the Mariners always had great hitting but outside of Randy, their pitching was usually not up to par. Feel they overcompensated with Safeco Field: its similar to what the Dodgers did 40 years earlier trading in Ebbets Field for Dodgers Stadium. As for Edgar, I would rank him as the second-best hitter in the AL that year (only behind Albert Belle) and third in all of MLB (Piazza). Dude was money in the clutch.

I'm encouraged by what I'm hearing/reading about Buehler:

Quote:
For Buehler, next few weeks will determine October role
September 3rd, 2024
Juan Toribio

ANAHEIM -- After questions about what the Dodgers’ pitching staff could look like in October, manager Dave Roberts gives the same answer nearly every time.

Quote:
“Performance will dictate everything,” Roberts is quick to say, including before Tuesday’s game against the Angels.

It’s a simple, but clear, message from Roberts. With a starting staff dealing with a multitude of injuries, the Dodgers don’t yet know who will be their Game 1 starter in the postseason, much less the rest of the starting rotation. That brings a lot of uncertainty, but also a lot of opportunity.

Walker Buehler is among those players with a big opportunity ahead of them heading into the last few weeks of the season. Buehler delivered his second consecutive encouraging start, allowing two runs over five strong frames in the Dodgers’ 6-2 win in 10 innings at Angel Stadium.

Quote:
“From the last start, I thought it was even better in the sense of his composure,” Roberts said.

“I think right now, Walker’s in compete mode. I think that it’s important that, when you’re in September, you’ve got a few starts left until we get to the postseason, and him trying to find some traction and get to being the pitcher that he was.”

With Yoshinobu Yamamoto making his way back from injury and uncertainties surrounding how much the Dodgers will get from Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw down the stretch, the team is desperately needing a pair of starters to step up as it gets ready for the postseason.

Jack Flaherty and Gavin Stone give L.A. two solid options right now. Bobby Miller, like Buehler, will have to earn a role on the postseason staff. Getting some of the injured pitchers back would undoubtedly help, but the Dodgers aren’t in a position to depend on them returning this season.

That gives Buehler an opportunity.

Quote:
On Tuesday, Buehler, once again, relied heavily on his curveball to get outs when needed, throwing it 25 times and getting three whiffs. Outside of solo homers to Logan O’Hoppe and Taylor Ward, Buehler was in control of the Angels’ lineup, striking out six and walking just two.

Quote:
“I think these past two starts, obviously the line doesn’t reflect it last time, but starting to get some punchouts and all of that kind of stuff [is good] and I think for me, it’s all these little tiny boxes checked,” Buehler said.

“I feel like myself and I feel like I can go and throw the ball well. And tonight wasn’t my best game ever, but for right now, I’m pretty happy about it and confident and in four, five, six days, whatever we end up doing, I feel ready to take the ball and I feel like I can help us win.”

It’s no secret that it’s been a tough season for Buehler. He has spent more time on the injured list than on the mound. There have been moments when he has looked nothing like the pitcher the Dodgers grew accustomed to before his second Tommy John surgery.

But over the next two months, Buehler has a chance to erase what has happened. When asked how he measures progress over the next few weeks, Buehler quickly responded with “performance.” That’s ultimately going to determine how he’s used in October. His last two outings have been his best ones this season.

Quote:
“I would’ve loved to have felt like this in April, you know what I mean?” Buehler said. “But at the end of the day, I have a month to more so put the finishing touches on how I feel as a Major League starter and how I can help us win in the playoffs.”

Yeah, I just love what he's saying. It's very genuine and I love his perspective. He's really trying everything to compete. He's using his curveball more now because he knows his fastball's not there anymore. He's not being stubborn. He's very willing to change and adapt.

Contrast this with Syndergaard who kept talking about how his 98mph fastball was coming back anytime now.

So I take back what I said about the $17M we spent on Buehler being a waste. He might not be worth the entire $17M, but he's worth some portion of it ($9M?). And he's out there competing and he's a Dodger legend, so I'm glad we kept him. I take it back.

I'm back on the Buehler train. I'm optimistic again that he can be a no. 4 pitcher for us in the playoffs.

Something like 5ip, 3ER is fine to me for a 4th starter in the playoffs.

Funny Joe Kelly story:

Quote:
Dodgers Joe Kelly Traded His Glove to a Fan For a Shohei Ohtani Bobblehead

Turns out, it’s not only fans going after Shohei Ohtani bobbleheads.

The Los Angeles Dodgers hosted Shohei Ohtani bobblehead night last week, which gave the first 40,000 fans at Dodger Stadium the chance to get a highly coveted Ohtani bobblehead. There was so much excitement for the bobbleheads that a huge line emerged outside Dodger Stadium more than eight hours before the start of the game.

Along with the fans, Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly became interested in obtaining a gold Shohei Ohtani bobblehead. Thinking there were only a limited amount of the gold version of the collectible, Kelly gave up one of his gloves for a gold bobblehead, only for the entire team to get the gold bobblehead shortly after.

Teammate Blake Treinen recounted the story on Foul Territory.

Quote:
“Joe Kelly had his son, Knox, at the field that day,” Treinen said.

“Some guy was showing his gold Shohei bobblehead and said, ‘Joe, I’ll trade you a bobblehead for a glove.” So Joe threw his game glove up there thinking he got one of maybe five gold bobbleheads because we already had our bobbleheads in the clubhouse and they weren’t gold.”

“Joe thought he was making out with a good deal. Next thing you know we get back after stretching and we all have gold bobbleheads in our locker. It was crazy the prices those gold bobbleheads were trying to be sold for, upwards of 15 grand … So Joe thought he did a good thing for his son, ‘hey I got a college fund for him.’ He gave away his glove for nothing.”

Kelly did not end up getting his glove back, but he now has two gold Ohtani bobbleheads. Kelly is currently on the injured list due to a shoulder injury.

Joe Kelly might not be a good pitcher for us, but dude is a trip off the field.

Watch the video, it's funny hearing Treinen explain it: LINK

#Dodgers Tyler Glasnow played catch out to 120 feet again today. Said he will probably be ready to throw off a mound Friday or Saturday when team is back in LA

Sep 3, 2024

Quote:
Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow Still Hasn’t Been Cleared to Throw off a Mound

Glasnow has been dealing with injuries a lot lately. He's only made five starts since the end of June, first because of a back injury that landed him on the IL for a bit in July, and now he's out again with elbow tendinitis.

The right-hander initially characterized the elbow discomfort as “nothing super concerning to me” when it flared up. But it has become super concerning to the Dodgers as time passed and Glasnow has struggled to regain his health.

Quote:
“When you don’t throw for a while, everything kind of goes back to, like, a normal arm," Glasnow told Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

"Then you start to throw again, and it’s like alright, I used to have to have a normal wear and tear of the season, kind of like good inflammation I guess, it keeps everything stable. That’s gone, so it feels a little different. But then as you ramp up, it’s like alright, this feels normal again.”

While Glasnow seems confident in his return, he doesn't have that much time to ramp up and feel normal again.

Quote:
“I don’t have a ton of time but I think it will be enough time,” he said. “I want a couple more games and then just be ready for the postseason.”

Manager Dave Roberts told Plunkett the “best-case scenario” is three starts before the end of the regular season for Glasnow. But, for him to even move to the active roster he has to start throwing off a mound before Roberts said “it will be a little more tangible for me."

If Glasnow can recapture a glimpse of the pitcher he's been for most of the season, the Dodgers should feel comfortable with him pitching in the postseason. After all, that's why he is in Los Angeles.

Quote:
“That’s why I came here,” Glasnow said, acknowledging the obvious.

“I want to pitch well in the postseason. That’s like my only goal playing baseball. The progression of it, obviously it’s like getting to the big leagues, signing a contract, the security of that and then it just becomes winning. It’s always kind of about winning, but that number one priority is just the World Series. That’s like all I think about now.”

Yeah, not feeling good about Glasnow. He's our AD. Kinda made of glass.

Wow, Matt Chapman got paid:

Quote:
Giants, Matt Chapman reach 6-year extension worth $151M

Third baseman Matt Chapman and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a six-year, $151 million contract extension late Wednesday, keeping the veteran from opting out of his current deal to reach free agency.

The deal, which starts in 2025 and replaces the last two years of a three-year, $54 million contract he signed earlier this year, includes no deferred money and a full no-trade clause, sources told ESPN. The deal will expire in 2030, when Chapman will be 37.

Chapman, 31, has been one of the most productive players in baseball this season, combining a powerful bat with the best third-base defense in the major leagues. And less than a year after his market in free agency cratered, Chapman parlayed his strong season into a significant payday -- and guaranteed himself more than $170 million between this season and the end of the extension.

It's a stunning turnabout from the winter, when Chapman's free agency dragged and landed him in San Francisco. All three years of his contract included opt-outs at the end, and Chapman went into spring training saying he wanted to bet on himself rather than take a lesser long-term deal.

The bet paid off. With a .247/.333/.445 line, Chapman has an adjust OPS 21% better than league average. His 22 home runs and 56 extra-base hits lead the Giants. And his glove, golden four times already, could be platinum-worthy this season.

Quote:
All of it put him near the top of wins above replacement leaderboards throughout the game.

His 6.0 Baseball-Reference WAR are the ninth most in baseball.

At FanGraphs, it's 4.5 WAR, 13th among position players.

It's reminiscent of the seasons that gave Chapman his first two Gold Gloves and his only All-Star appearance.

This is one of the problems I have with WAR. It's just a formula someone made up. How can one WAR formula have him worth 6.0 and another have him worth 4.5?

That's just so arbitrary.

But anyways, good for Chapman that he got paid. And it's another loss for Boras. To have this strong of a season and not trust Boras to opt out and re-enter free agency?

Yeah, that says alot about his belief in Boras to get him a deal bigger than $151M.

Kinda baseball news, kinda not:

A women's soccer player (Croix Bethune), the 3rd overall pick this year, threw out the ceremonial 1st pitch at the Nationals game and tore her knee and is now out for the year. Wow!

Quote:
Washington Spirit's Croix Bethune suffers season-ending knee injury

Washington Spirit rookie midfielder Croix Bethune will miss the rest of the NWSL season after apparently suffering a knee injury while throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Washington Nationals game last week.

The Spirit said Wednesday that Bethune, who was part of the United States Olympic team that won the gold medal in Paris last month, suffered a torn meniscus "away from training" and won't play again in 2024 while she rehabs the injury.

The 23-year-old Bethune did not travel with the team for Sunday's 1-1 draw at the San Diego Wave.

Quote:
"She had a problem making the first pitch in the baseball game," Spirit coach Jonatan Giráldez said after the match. "She is not going to be available this season. It is part of life. You have to keep going."

Bethune, the third overall pick in the NWSL draft, has five goals and 10 assists in 17 games.

She was honored alongside Spirit teammates and fellow Olympians Trinity Rodman, Casey Krueger and Hal Hershfelt before the Nationals hosted the New York Yankees on Aug. 28. She appeared to grimace slightly while walking off the mound after making the pitch.

Good read LBP.

Great to see Buehler trending upwards lately. Trusting his other pitches over fastballs is really showing growth lately. He knows it's the right move, and it’s exciting to watch it pay off. Proud of the way he’s improving. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Speaking of Bobby Miller, just a couple of days ago, I saw an interview where he talked about gaining confidence in his other pitches and not relying on his fastball as much, which led to a solid game. But yesterday, he went right back to the fastball. He is so predictable when he walks a batter. It's fastball after fastball after he walks a batter and everyone and their mom knows it.

2 things.

1) I've lost all hope in Miller for 2024. Send him down to AAA (if the season is still going on). Otherwise, shut him down. Let him work on whatever his flaws are and come back strong next year.

2) If he's that predictable, I still don't know who's at fault. Is it the catcher, him, or our pitching coach? Someone's calling these predictable pitches, right?
