Nate should be good for the young guys. He is pretty strict.

I think this is every bit as big a deal, knowing who we hired as HC. JJ needs experienced help and we picked up a couple excellent choices IMO.

I am not saying its not important, but when people log on, they are going to think we made a trade at first glance. It doesn't matter anyways.

I do agree this is BREAKING NEWS.
A solid coaching staff probably would have won us a lot more games last year.
Not being able to make adjustments in-game and with lineups and rotations helped the team lose games they should have won.
A solid coaching staff will help turn the tide. I know Nate was a solid player and top notch defender. We need that in our coaching staff.
I feel better this morning, even pending any moves to round out the roster, with just this news.

I like the Nate McMillan hire, guy has tons of experience playing in the league and coaching.

Not sure what Scott Brooks brings exactly. He was the weak point of the Thunder teams and was let go by Portland as an assistant coach. Does anyone know if he is an X's and O's guy?

The weak point of that Thunder team was Westbrook.

He improved the OKC teams when he coached there.
NBA Coach of the year 2010 (28 game-win increase from the previous season)
Took the team from 22 wins to 50 wins!!
Won 55, 60 and 59 win seasons in OKC

Took OKC to the finals in 2012 and lost to the Miami Heat.

NBA champion 1994 as a player.

I think that is good experience...

Brooks is one of the least inventive offensive minds of this century. It's a complete "he was the head coach of a team that had a lot of good guys on it!" hire. Maybe he'll be helpful in that JJ can do the opposite of whatever he thinks? Just more evidence that Rob has no (bleep) clue about the NBA and should not have this job.

Always felt Brooks held those Thunder teams back. Now, if they kept Harden, they probably win anyway due to the sheer amount of talent they had and the fact that all those dudes (KD, Harden, Ibaka), sans Russ, were very, very capable of sharing the ball and working as a team.

But who really knows what brooks offers, we know very little about how these cats operate.

Is Gentry still on the table? Or likely not with these two coming on board

Again, no one happy around here.
Who do you guys want as "assistant" coaches?
I would love Cassell or Dudley but I don't think they are leaving their gigs.
Who else are you high on?

I am happy with Brooks and Nate. I am sure there are more coming.

He's the guy we should have hired. Who knows if he was even interested. We hired two former head coaches who looked like the game was passing them by when they were head coaches and apparently had zero interest from other teams, so they were probably cheap. But Laker fans know their names and that means more to Rob than actual knowledge/skills.

Yeah this is kind of a miserable cesspool. I skew pretty negative on this team but jeez. People are writing odes to how much they hate LeBron. Someone's going to get their post animated by Glen Keane and scored by John Williams.

To be fair, the same was said about Vogel being supported by Kidd and Hollins. Yet their run together was quite strong. Probably our best coaching staff outside of Phil, were those 2 years when we had Vogel, Kidd, Hollins (not to mention Handy).

The worst thing we could do was let JJ do what Ham and Luke did. Already of to a better start. The Xs and Os are supposed to be JJs strength, while the experience he lacks can be balanced out with these 2 exHCs.

Don’t get me wrong though. If we hired JJ for any other reason than being way ahead of Ham in Xs and Os we’re already in big trouble.

I was pleased to hit X this morning and see this news. Particularly that we got Scott Brooks. We wanted experienced folks on the coaching staff and we got them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

These seem fine an they ought to complement each other: JJ brings the creativity and outside-the-box thinking, the assistants bring meat-and-potatoes experience and do the grunt work.

JJ said he was close to hiring his head of player development or something. Mentioned it yesterday at the press conference for the rookies

Been mentioning Stotts for months now. Gentry was another great option. If Brooks and Nate came in addition to them, that would work too but if Brooks/Nate are the top guys on the staff, we were penny pinching (again).

Should have been Gentry, who didn't quite pan out as a coach (D'Antoni 2.0), but is a top tier assistant due to his offensive acumen.

read up on Nate. Well liked?

Guy has a ton of class from what I've seen of him. And yes I think players can relate to him.

Edit: a bit more - he can be a bit of a drill sargent, but he was one of the keys in transforming the Jailblazers into a squad that showed some respect for its coaching staff, teammates, community, and he stood up for people when they made the effort. Side note, when a girl faltered singing the national anthem in the Rose Garden, he walked out there and finished it alongside her. Standing ovation for that, that's who he is. I like the choice.

Are you confusing Nate with Maurice Cheeks?

Yes dammit

^Nonetheless I know how Nate helped the Blazers, and I think he's going to help the role players on this roster.
