The U.S. has 30 medals, the most of any nation, but only 5 of them are gold. Never quite seen a disparity like this before. We only have the 7th-most gold medals so far.
Won 4 today, so they shot up to 2nd in the standings.
I am looking forward to track and field, probably my favorite truly "Olympic" event even though I wouldn't have a problem checking out surfing, golf or skateboarding but those feel a bit non-Olympic to me.
The sprints and hurdles especially are my favorites. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny

Yes. Track and field is my favorite in the Olympics. I'll miss any other events (even basketball) but I never miss track and field. Funny thing is I tried watching non Olympic track and field events and I just can't. It has to be Olympics.
Oh and surfing event is insane this time since they are doing the event in Tahiti. Big waves with perfect tubes makes the event so much better.

Yes, track and field feels like "classic olympics" (though wrestling might have the antique tradition), just as gymnastics has that vibe as well.
There are some disciplines I could go without, mostly those that already have an established world tour and culture, like Tennis, Basketball, Handball, Golf... Actually now that I think of most of the team sports/ball sports have a question mark for me.
Was there any discussion here on the Algerian boxer who was born a male beating the female boxer from Italy?
That one was tough to watch. Saw the highlights.
Not sure that's fair play.
I was about to post the same question just to get an idea how most on LG feel about this. I don't see any problem here. Transphobic people (Rowling, Musk etc.) were quick to pass judgement on the IOC and the boxer herself. But Imane Khelif was born a woman and is not a transgender athlete. And she's been beaten before by other women. _________________ “Properly read, the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.”

It seems there's a lot of false info on her. The assumption most make is that she was born a male and that is what I saw on the YT clip, the person say. That's why you gotta be real careful where you get information.

I'm on the trans train. A person should be allowed to trans if they want to. However, I have a problem in sports when a person born male competes with cisgender women, and strength is involved. I think that's unfair, especially in a sport like boxing. Khelif was assigned female at birth. What does that mean? Was she born intersex and assigned female? So much is unknown.

What an unbelievable finish in the men's 10,000 meters! Grant Fisher just took home the bronze for Team USA, our first medal in this event in 56 years. There was a pack of more than 10 guys who were right next to each other for the final 10 laps or so, and then in the last 2 laps guys tried to make their move. Even in the final 100 meters or so, it looked like at least 5 or 6 guys still had a shot. Fisher almost had a fall with about 6 laps to go, reminding me of Mary Decker Slaney way back in the 1980's at the Olympics, if some of you remember that. But he was able to steady himself and recovered quickly to stay right near the leaders. Fisher had an awesome finishing kick and it looked like he was going to actually get the silver, but one of the Ethiopian runners had the best final 30 meters or so and ended up nipping Fisher at the wire to get the silver.

How about St. Lucia getting their first Olympic Medal of All Time?
And it is a Gold in a premier event, the Women's 100 Meters.
Julien Alfred just became a living legend for that beautiful country, props to her and St. Lucia...
Amazing start to finish dominant. Richardson looked really nervous or at least emotions were visible on face when she was announced before the race, maybe because of four years wait to run in the Olympics after no Tokyo in 2020. But Alfred looked like no one was going to deny her no matter what.
What's up with Jamaican running? So dominant, so excellent for so long to kind of a disappearing act. Strange.

Alfred was faster in the qualifying races as well so it wasn't really a surprise.

The USA men's and women's basketball teams look to be unbeatable. I think Caitlin Clark should be on the women's team. I know what they say and understand the reason but I think it was a snub. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

An unbelievable day for me getting to watch Djokovic vs. Alcaraz for the men's gold medal match in tennis, at the same time that the golf event was winding down. Djoker completed the career Golden Slam with a spirited effort, with both guys giving their all, winning in two tiebreaks. As for the golf, Scottie Scheffler pulled out the gold medal for Team USA, and he did so with a stunning final round of 62. Jon Rahm, starting the final round in the lead, was at -20 through 10 holes and he had a 4-shot lead. Then he had a stunning collapse on the final 8 holes, bogeying 4 of them and double bogeying one of them, to fall out of the medals entirely.
Team USA also got a gold medal performance out of Kristen Faulkner in road cycling, our first medal in this event in 40 years, since the last L.A. Games. With about 3 or 4 km to go, it was a pack of 4 bunched up, and then it was as if Faulkner activated a speed button and she just sped away from the other 3 and won easily.

Bobby Finke of Team USA just won the 1500m freestyle (swimming, of course) in world record time! Just under 14 minutes and 31 seconds of swimming. Makes me think of the George Carlin line "swimming isn't a sport...swimming is a way to keep from drowning!"
Don't really care much for the Olympics but I'm happy Noah got the gold in the 100M. Nieces are runners and we've been watching a lot of his content/training videos on Youtube. Really cool dude. _________________ KOBE

I like him. And I'll say no more.
What a race. Curley gets the bronze as well. Super packed group. The announcers thought the Jamaican guy had won it but they were wrong!
