4-0 at Home... With the Sixers missing two of their stars, this was a relatively easy W at home.
The Lakers got off to a 21-10 start, hitting 5-6 from three out of the gate. The Sixers would reel them in, but the Lakers closed the half strong.
Redick slid Russell to the bench tonight in place of the more athletic Reddish. This may have helped Reaves as he didn’t have to do as much heavy lifting defensively. He was draining threes, finding teammates and making things happen. Dominant first half from him.
Defensively, the Lakers had 13 blocks. Great work by Hayes off the bench to help in that effort.
The game never seemed in doubt in the second half. LeBron cruised to a triple-double and the Lakers won 116-106.
“This felt like the right thing to do right now, but I just want to be clear, this is all fluid,” Redick said of the move of Russell to the bench.
LeBron -- -- Triple-double. He had 7 points, 6 boards and 8 assists at the half. Great job moving the ball. Helps when AR is bombing threes. He also had 3 blocks in the first half, stripping Drummond under the hoop in that half. Some three ball from Bron mixed in with the bully ball to the rim. But the passing was just next level. He had a couple of sweet behind-the-back dimes to Russell in the second half. Russell then found him for a three right after. He just picked the Sixers apart, not sure if he broke a sweat. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 9-14 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 13 assists, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +12.
Davis -- -- He led the Lakers with 22 points on 10-13 shooting at the half. The three ball was going down. He was also getting downhill, attacking the rim throughout. He still looked a little off with the bad wheel, but he played at top gear. No Embiid, we better get the W. Drummond was a -19. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 11-20 shooting (2-3 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 4 blocks, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +20.
Reaves -- -- He was feeling it from three in the first half, making 5-6, on his way to 17 points along with 6 assists in the first two quarter. He brought the A game offensively and was scrappy on D. He was just letting it fly from three, whether in transition, on the move, sidestepping closeouts. He just looked very confident tonight. More like that, please. Just an all-around game with the passing in the mix, too. If we lighten his load defensively, you hope the shot making is more like this. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-13 shooting (6-10 from three) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -6.
Hachimura -- -- Really love the three shooting this year. He’s been looking automatic. He made 3-6, including a couple from the corners early on. He laos had a nice feed out of a post up double to a three shooter. Defensively, when he was mismatched with Drummond, he was having trouble with his size defensively. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -4.
Reddish -- -- Into the starting lineup for Russell, he had the George assignment defensively. He poked a ball away for a stop and hit a three early on. Redick liked the screen setting by Cam. Not a lot of action, but helped keep George to just 9 points on 4-13 shooting. You wonder if this might be the future Vando role. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a -6.
Russell -- -- “I just want to win,” he repeated multiple times after the game. He came in off the bench with 4 minutes left in the first quarter along with Dalton when Bron, Reaves and Reddish sat. He was aggressive, getting to the rim and hitting from three. Bron found him with a couple behind-the-back passes for a layup on a cut and a three next time down. The bench had no major lulls with the change in rotation, but they were facing a depleted Sixer lineup. Still, this is probably the most D’Angelo Russell of a game we’ve seen. Not sure how I feel about the move, but it helps our defense and offense. The bench had 32 points tonight. Let’s do it again. JJ praised him for his professionalism. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-12 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists and 1 turnovers in 25 minutes. He was a +13.
Christie -- -- Out of the rotation and in for garbage time on this one. He scored a layup on a cut to take a feed for Koloko. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) in 1 minute. He was a -4.
Hayes -- -- The Lakers had 13 blocks in this game and Hayes had 4 of those. One of his better defensive games of the year. Not only because of the blocks, but he just seemed to be in the right place more often than not. He also had a couple switches on Jackson forcing him into an airball and a shotclock violation after he blocked it on another stand. Great job tonight. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 blocks and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +0.
Vincent -- -- He scored a layup attacking off the three line. Not much else worthy of mention. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +4.
Knecht -- -- Came in for Reddish 5 minutes into second half to run with starters. Interesting rotation there that early. But he was playing with some good hustle and activity out there. Offensively, he was tapped on a number of threes. Despite the poor shooting, he was still a +17. The threat of spacing and the energy/hustle probably helping that number. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-8 shooting (0-5 from three) to go with 4 boards in 16 minutes. He was a +17.
Hood-Schifino -- -- Nothing to report in 1 minute. The Stats: No stats in 1 minute. He was a -4.
Bronny -- -- He’ll get some good minutes in South Bay tomorrow. A minute of garbage action in this one. The Stats: No stats in 1 minute. He was a -4.
Koloko -- -- Bullet feed to Christie rolling for a layup. The Stats: He had 1 board, 1 assist and 1 foul in 1 minute. He was a -1.
Redick -- -- “I thought both those guys starred in the roles they had tonight,” JJ said of the Reddish/Russell swap. We really need athleticism and activity around LeBron… Coach’s Challenge two minutes in on a Bron foul. JJ won it… “I was really just happy for the group to connect again,” JJ said… |

Thanks DB!
So when Vando's back, are we running:
LeBron/ Reaves/ Vando/ Rui/ AD?
Given Vando's defensive versatility it's interesting. |

Maybe J.J. Reddick should introduce DLo to how Vinnie Johnson was used.
DLo's role is clear, provide instant offense and know that he will have the ball hence controlling the offense. He will be playing the opposing team's bench players hence playing defense is not as much a critical factor.
If he is playing well, he will close games.
Yes, Cam is playing the role that Vando will be playing
Maybe Christie, if he can, needs to get some reps on the G League team because he looks just lost and not bringing the needed energy/effort - espedially on defense
Maybe a defensive rotation could be Vando, Cam, Vincent, Christie (if he gets back his confidence) and AD or LBJ
Love all the reporters trying to tempt DLo into saying something bad about Ham in various different ways and DLo just repeating the same answers that didn't offend anybody - lol!! |

Thanks DB.
Good job by JJ and the team. DLo took the change well and was aggressive off the bench. _________________ Darvin Ham is an idiot! |

Thanks DB! Missed watching live, and initially wasn't sure how fond I was of moving DLO to the second string, but the results speak for themselves! Not just the win, but how they played to their strengths better this way.
We'll see how long it takes teams to scout out the new player rotation, but as it stands this improves the bench by leaps and bounds. DLO can help organize the offense with the second unit and get them going, get about 25 minutes playing time, he doesn't have to defend the best player on the other team anymore, and we now have a guard in the starting lineup who can put up a better challenge when opponents force switches.
I'm surprised how well Cam held up on defense, good game. Nice preview of how to use Vando.
Philly was banged up, and it was a home game, so this isn't the best gauge for how much we improved, but we didn't just look bad closing out that road trip, we looked awful. Hats off to JJ for the adjustment.
Also good to hear from JJ, Reaves and others that DLO took this like a professional. And good to see the Lakers back in the win column. |

Can’t wait to see AR-Vando back court!
I know Hayes got 4 blocks but nor he or Rui were able to push Drummond from grabbing boards, at all _________________ “The main goal for the Lakers is to win a championship. All I care about, all we care about, is to raise another banner in the rafters.“ |

With DLo having a free rein on offense against opposing teams' bench players, the need to have great defensive players is not as great against most teams. Against teams that are deep like the Dubs, Cs, Knicks and a few others - DLo will be challenged more to defend. DLo's gravity will give more clean airspace for Knecht to shoot - he will be more effective/productive
If J.J. keeps Cam involved in setting screens and seeking the dunker position, like what they will have Vando do when he returns, team can survive with him on the offensive end of the court. With LBJ/AR handling the ball and AD as the hub of the offense, it should be ok
Sad that Christie is starting to look useless like Prince in the last season. Seems as if he took a couple steps back and if he doesn't watch out - he will have a permanent seat next to J.J. during the season. |
