If JJ says he’s been talking to DLo then we should just take that for what it is unless confirmed info comes out stating otherwise.

I don't know why JJ would boldly lie about something so unnecessary and easy to disprove. But everyone has their own way of thinking.

What’s bold about it and how would you disprove it? You really think Redick thinks Russell will “have a major role” on this team? You truly believe he’s “thrilled” to coach him? I’m sure they’ve spoken since JJ got the job but if he hadn’t been asked a question about Russell directly it would have been another interview/press conference where he acts like he doesn’t exist. I just feel bad JJ had to keep all this excitement a secret all summer.

You don't think D'lo will ever be interviewed and asked about JJ? Or if D'lo corroborates the story you're gonna say he's lying too? Again, strange hill to die on. You think the Lakers and JJ never envisioned a scenario where they couldn't trade D'lo and he stays with the team and planned accordingly? You're doubling down on this theory for unknown reasons.

I’m sure if DLo is asked about it he will give a similarly political answer because that’s what people in these situations do.

Lol

You really think people at these press conferences never lie? It’s hard to believe someone can be this naive.

You've already stated that even if D'lo confirms JJ's claim, you'll still consider it a lie. You're married to your own delusion and it's not my place to interfere.

I hate to be the one that has to explain this to you, but grown up adults sometimes say the thing they’re supposed to say even though they don’t actually mean it. When a player gets traded to the Pistons and he says how excited he is? He might actually not be telling the truth. When a GM of a middling team says he loves their chances? There’s a chance he’s not being completely forthcoming. When you lost a tooth and discovered a dollar under your pillow…even though your mom swore it was the fairy…and even though you have the dollar bill as confirmation…that might also have been a lie. These press conferences, especially the pre-season ones, are BS spin exercises. If you think JJ believes he’s going into the playoffs with DLo and if you think DLo also believes that you have no authority to talk to anyone about delusion.

Sometimes being a grownup includes saying the truth, and not bending integrity to fit people's expectations. We don't know what's going through JJ's head and this long argument is pointless.

i would not doubt pelinka liking Dlo. that's his history with bench guys

Reddish - zero market- rob likes
Wood - Zero market - rob likes
hayes - zero market - Rob likes
Dlo - zero market rob likes

monk- market - rob doesn't like

Lets hope JJ realizes sooner rather than later that we actually need talent and that in order for player dev to work you have to have quality guys with a little ceiling.

I believe that if JJ hadn't talked to D'lo like you assume, he wouldn't come out and make a fantastic lie about talking to him more than anyone else on the team. If you want to move goalposts or create strawmen to save face from the ridiculous claim you made with no evidence, that's entirely up to you.

I never said they never talked. I’ll leave it at this and let you have the last word but as you get more into adulthood you’ll probably develop a BS detector rather than just blindly believe everything people say, particularly when they’re incentivized to lie. The writing has been on the wall for DLo for a while now. I’ll put it this way. The last season Westbrook was here he was in a similar position. An expiring contract that everyone, including Westbrook, knew was going to be moved. Ham took the opposite tact that JJ did. Rather than pretend he doesn’t exist, he constantly talked him up as a huge and important part of the team. While I think this is the better and classier approach, I didn’t believe him either because I’m not 6. You might find my claim ridiculous, but it’s not nearly as ridiculous as thinking that he was talking to DLo more than anyone else and has huge plans for him while simultaneously never mentioning his name across an entire summer of interviews.

lol. FO/coaches arent obligated to tell the truth. They are loyal to their vision (assuming they have one). they may love Dlo or they may be letting it be known that he has no leash. To assume pelinka or anyone is telling us the truth is dumb on us.

It's always been hard to tell what's happening in the front office based on what's being said by the team itself. They're trained into giving standard PR answers. It's annoying, but it's probably the right thing to do. You don't want teams thinking you're actively trying to trade somebody and lose leverage.

We have no idea how close a trade actually is. One the flip side, Redick may actually be telling the truth because there's absolutely no trade opportunities on the horizon and they need DLo to lock in for the immediate future.

FWIW, this is the exact opposite of letting someone have the last word.

You have this habit of fixating on really narrow positions and just belaboring points on really scarce evidence. I recognize that because I also have that habit. But this one is especially strange because it's hard to even understand why you're arguing that someone is lying about something easily verifiable if you just ask DLo, just because you want this one little morsel in a press conference to emphasize how much Redick sucks (as a person?) before he's even coached a single game for this team. He may very well suck -- the odds are not on his side -- but to paint him as a Pelinka-esque liar early on based on exactly zero evidence is plain weird.

Redick didn't say "I love DLo and can't stop talking about him", which would have certainly run counter to the fact that he hasn't mentioned him. There are other reasons why he may not have brought up DLo thus far. Maybe they've already clashed. That doesn't mean they haven't talked a lot this summer, or that Redick doesn't see him as playing a major role (he does, because he's continuing to start him and has talked about putting him in a position to have a career year). One doesn't logically follow from the other. And look, DLo hasn't left a great taste in the mouths of past orgs he's played for. It's pretty clear he rubs some people the wrong way.

Redick has never coached at any level and wasn’t even thought about around the league. He might end up being good or he might end up being bad but for now some fans think that he will be the difference. Hope is undefeated.

He also wasn’t the guy they wanted to hire. That isn’t to say he can’t be successful, but he was their second choice.

Paul Westhead, Pat Riley & Frank Vogel have 6 combined "second choice" rings as Lakers HC.

Sure. Being the second choice doesn’t eliminate your chance to be successful. Just noting he wasn’t their guy. They wanted somebody else.

This isn't true.

JJ was their guy, then someone else became available that they never thought would be available and they made a run at him and when that didn't work they went back to JJ. That doesn't mean he wasn't their guy, he even acknowledged that if it were his choice he would have gone after Hurley too when that chance became available and, imo, they would have still brought JJ on even had they hired Hurley.

He had other interviews the year previous, I think one was with Charlotte and IIRC he had another as well. He only retired a few years ago from the NBA and already had head coaching interviews and now has a head coaching job. It's not like he was some veteran coach trying to get a job. You're delusional if you think that he wouldn't have found another opportunity this year or in the next couple of years. But negativity is kind of your brand so yea

Yeah why would JJ, the new HC and former 3pt specialist, talk to their starting point guard who also happens to be the best shooter in Laker history. Must be lying cuz random fan on the internet said so!

He’s getting the last word in our discussion. If he responds to me I’ll let it stand without commenting back. But I made no such promise to you so I’ll address this point. I have only belabored the point because of how absurdly defensive many of you have been about a pretty benign observation that I don’t think he’s being honest about his intentions. Your interpretation of my motives is also wildly off base. I don’t think Redick sucks and I don’t have it out for him. I thought it was pretty well agreed upon that DLo isn’t long for this world and that coaches and GMs lie and exaggerate at press conferences. If you think no lies were told that’s a fine (if naive) position.

Makes sense. He was probably talking about him all summer.

The most likely scenario is that they knew it was likely that they would be going into the season with DLO as the starting PG and JJ already has a relationship and is friends with DLO so it's also very likely they had a lot of communication. DLO was even on JJ's podcast for God's sake lmao.

DLO has had both AR and AD on his own podcast, he's been seen at events with Lakers players. He's very well liked on the team and since he's been here everyone has talked about how much of a leader and good teammate he is.

You've got whatever narrative that you want to be true very badly so you're pushing it no matter what. You got a guy who JJ would obviously want to coach given the 5 out, movement based, offense he wants to run. A guy who he's had on his podcast and is already friends with before this, telling you he's had a lot of communication with over the summer and you're just like "GROWN UPS LIE THIS CANNOT BE TRUE" like an insane person lol

He was plan A up until that point, then for a couple weeks they pursued Hurley, and then went back to their original plan A in JJ.

Yeah why would JJ, the new HC and former 3pt specialist, talk to their starting point guard who also happens to be the best shooter in Laker history. Must be lying cuz random fan on the internet said so!

Ok I have definitely underestimated how sensitive you guys are about JJ. If you don’t think it’s at all weird that he has acted like our third best player doesn’t exist all summer, and that player is also almost certain to be traded, then I give up. These aren’t difficult connections to make unless you’re intentionally trying to miss them.

JJ was someone they interviewed, along with others, who was not offered the job at the time they went out and offered it to someone else. Their offer to Hurley was also longer and more lucrative. That’s who they wanted. Doesn’t mean they thought Redick wasn’t a good choice, but he was Plan B.

He was plan A up until that point, then for a couple weeks they pursued Hurley, and then went back to their original plan A in JJ.

Plan A got the offer. Plan B got a smaller offer once Plan A declined.

Not sure if it’s been posted yet or not…nevertheless here is the full presser.

Any potential 2 picks trade that will continue the lakers excellence? Players? Under 30 I assume

There's nothing naive about taking people at their word, especially when they have no reasonable incentive to say something otherwise. The objective of the press conference is spin -- it's not a criminal interrogation. Did JJ overcompensate by saying he's talking to DLo the most out of anyone? Maybe? Is DLo not being brought up before evidence of that? Again, logically, not at all. You're doing some weird transference of Pelinka's personality onto JJ. It's not a benign observation, it's a claim that you're making with pretty scant evidence. That's the only callout here.

Nobody has “evidence” of it except for JJ. I’d be more apt to take him at his word if the sentiment he expressed the other day matched his other interviews rather than being the opposite where he has opted to talk about virtually all other key players except for him. It kinda stands out if you keep omitting the third best player on the team when discussing your plans and taking about what you’re excited about. It is benign because it’s something all coaches do to some extent. You’ve got to be pretty defensive about JJ to take it like it’s some crazy insult.
