WOW! Look at this page. Celebrities are dropping like flies.
Pete would run to 1st base on a walk. Players have done things more egregious than gambling and they're in the HOF. He admitted to betting on baseball, including Reds games, though he said he never bet against his team. He may not be in this realm to see it if it comes to fruition but he may see it on the other side. Pete Rose belongs in the Hall Of Fame. RIP Charlie Hustle. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

My position was always that he should be put into the Hall...after his death. Didn't deserve the honor while he was alive.

Not before Shoeless Joe Jackson gets in. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns".

I will never step foot into the baseball HOF as long as Pete isn’t in. Agree about Shoeless Joe, he didn’t even gamble. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

Why not?
He was way before my time, but his accomplishments and the passion he played the game with speak for themselves. They really messed up by not inducting him into Cooperstown while he was still alive. _________________ Lakers 49ers Chargers Dodgers

Let's set aside that he was a wretched human being for a moment. He committed THE cardinal sin that you can't do, or certainly couldn't at the time, which was to bet on baseball. A gambling scandal literally almost brought down the entire sport. Everyone knew that was the one thing you couldn't do. He did it. Not only did he do it, he then lied about it and kept up the lie for years and years. And here's the other thing: he accepted a lifetime ban. Lifetime. And no one better tell me the Rose line of "I thought I could re-apply for reinstatement in a year and it would be a formality." You really believe that? The guy took a lifetime ban. To me, that pretty clearly means that he did not deserve the sport's highest honor while he was still alive. Lifetime ban, folks.
Go ahead and put him in now. Wouldn't bother me. He didn't deserve the joy of being inducted while he was alive, I'm sorry.

Pete rose deserved to walk into the hall. Not because of pity, but because we all hated the (bleep) out of him, and it wasn’t personal. He was just nails. The most competitive guy the game ever saw. He made Kobe look warm and fuzzy and uncompetitive. After the steroid and juiced ball eras, there’s no justification for keeping him out. Because he’s probably the one guy you could find gambling and be sure he never threw so much as an at bat. There’s not another player I like less than him, past or present. And that’s probably the biggest compliment I can give him. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. I think he would have gotten in if he handled things differently. He lied about it so long and when he finally admitted to gambling, he looked like he wasn’t sorry at all.

ATLANTA -- Hank Aaron is adamant: Pete Rose has no place in
the Hall of Fame, or anywhere in baseball.
The all-time home run leader harshly criticized the career hit
king for an insincere confession, saying Rose should not be
reinstated after admitting he bet on the game.
"During these past few days, I've looked at Pete on television,
and he hasn't given any signs of an honest confession," Aaron told
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an interview published in
Friday editions.
"Plus, I've seen absolutely no truth whatsoever in what he's
saying," he said…
"A rule is a rule, and the rule is on every clubhouse door that you
can't bet on baseball. It doesn't say that you're excluded if you
have 4,000 hits or 700 home runs."

Yes, he bet on baseball, which is very wrong, and he lied about it for years. But he eventually admitted that he did it.
As for him being a wretched human being that wasn't likeable off the field. It's important to separate a man from his art. We can really dislike or hate someone personally but also give them the utmost respect for what they do as a career.
For example, O.J. Simpson was a much more wretched human being than Pete Rose and just a total scumbag. He was also an incredible running back. He was the first man to rush for 2,000 yards in one season, and he did it back when they played just 14 games a year, and also when the NFL was even more violent. I'm willing to give him credit for that even though I've only known him as a double-murderer and pretty much hated him.
Bob Costas has said that Pete Rose should've been banned from baseball but inducted into the Hall of Fame. He also said not putting Rose in the HOF was "cruel and unusual punishment."
Definitely say on Rose's HOF plaque that he has banned from baseball for betting on baseball and then lying about it. But also put on the plaque that he played the game with as much passion and pride as any other athlete. That way, if you're a little kid seeing it, you can learn lessons from both sides in terms of what to do and what not to do in life. _________________ Lakers 49ers Chargers Dodgers

I realize I'm in the minority, the great minority, in fact, among baseball fans with this take. And I actually agree that even though he was probably a statutory rapist and all sorts of other terrible things, character is a slippery slope so it should be about your achievements on the field. But as I said before, for me, he committed the thing at the time that everybody knew you couldn't do, and he was given a lifetime ban for it. That's just what it comes down to for me.
Shoeless Joe's omission is the one that fans should really be upset about. Didn't even gamble, and also was a much better player than Rose was.

So what about Barry Bonds? No HOF ever like Rose?
I don't think what he did is nearly as egregious. The majority of the league was juicing in some form during his era, pitchers included.
Actual cheating in the game even if widespread is more egregious than the act of betting on games. Throwing games is another matter. The entire reason for no betting on baseball was to avoid that. So breaking the rule wasn’t the actual act of cheating, it’s what enabled it or the perception of it.
I don’t know if rose bet against his own team, or if beyond that, that he did anything on the field to inhibit his team because of a bet. Without that, he broke a pretty big rule and deserved a ban for a period of time. But not lifetime.
Fwiw, I don’t like bonds either and I think he’s an actual cheater (just as every Tour de France rider who was juicing is a cheater), but I think he belongs in the hall, as does shoeless Joe (even if he took money to cheat games). There just needs to be context around it. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
