Preseason Yawnfest... A bit of a boring game in Vegas as the Lakers fell to the Warriors, 111-97.
The Lakers ran a lot more iso than we’ve seen so far in the preseason. That resulted in a 58-51 deficit at the half. (AD and AR had 29 of those points.)
Redick ran his 9-man rotation in the first half, then late in the third went to the deeper bench. The Lakers lost all four quarters in this one.
On the defense, Redick said there was a lot to clean up with their off-ball rules.
“When we made stuff up they hurt us,” Redick said. He said the ball stuck in players hands a bit too much in that third quarter when they scored just 19 points.
LeBron -- -- A lot of iso ball and very much a cruise control game. Probably his weakest outing of the preseason. He’s had some dominating halves of ball up until this one. The offense didn’t get very organized. In the first half, he had a very post attack to the middle of the paint to throw down with two hands. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-9 shooting to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -13.
Davis -- -- He led the team with 16 points on 6-10 shooting and 9 boards in the first half. A lot of iso ball in the first half. AD dunked off one two-man sequence with Reaves, but for the most part that was all iso. His best play might have been a read of the help D as AD faced up in the post. The help defender left Hayes to zone up and AD quickly put the ball up for Hayes to dunk. He’d score on a couple iso turnarounds in the post and a face up midrange jumper. He also cleaned up Vincent missed drive. He’d sit with 24 points on 10-14 shooting in three quarters. Very strong outings to start the preseason. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 10-14 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +3.
Russell -- : sleepy: -- He didn’t scratch until the second half when he hit back-to-back threes. Like a lot of Lakers, it didn’t seem like he was into this one. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-10 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +2.
Reaves -- -- Strong first half with 13 points, getting to the line for 6 FTs. A lot of deception in the sets, looking to pass or handoff, but keeping it and getting the defense off balance. He’d also bury a three in transition. Strong first half and then they rested him for the second half. He’s been doing a great job getting to the line in the preseason. More so than usual. He said he felt good and wanted to play more, but stuck to the script. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 3-8 shooting (2-6 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -10.
Hachimura -- -- Aggressive effort from Rui. He swished a three in transition early, then hit a few from the midrange. He had a good steal in the fourth, deflected a pass getting into the passing lane and taking it the distance for a dunk. Nice to see bigger rebound numbers. He had some good looks from three but couldn’t knock them down. JJ said Rui has been “super committed to our classroom” that they run in the mornings and was pleased with the rebounding effort. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-14 shooting (1-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -7.
Christie -- -- Not a lot of impact in this game. Defensively, he had a moment in the first half containing his man on multiple moves before forcing an airball against the shotclock. Not as successful when he got the Curry assignment in the second half. Just a couple boards in this one, including a nice offensive one with two hands in a crowd. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -10.
Hayes -- -- A couple nice dunks tonight. One off a big-to-big lob from Ad. The other on a roll to the hoop where LeBron bounced a pocket pass to him for the slam. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -15.
Vincent -- -- He’ll be one of the early bench contributors and rotation players for the team. He’s had some solid outings offensively in the preseason, but this one was fairly lackluster. The highlight was probably drawing a charge in transition D. Otherwise, very quiet. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -5.
Knecht -- -- We didn’t really take advantage of his three-level scoring, but he was firing from distance. A lot of catch-and-shoot three attempts, nothing getting him downhill into the midrange or to the hoop. His first three was on a play out of a timeout, again showing JJ’s confidence in him. Later, he sunk another three from the top of the arc on a kickout from Russell. Then, as they shifted to more of the deep bench, he started to get going, knocking down a three on a handoff from JHS. He then swished another on his next attempt taking the ball behind the big on an inbounds sequence, not an easy one. He’d finish a layup on the break. He knocked down another three in transition on a kickout. Then missed a heat check three and was tapped on another quick-fire three attempt. Love the aggressiveness. Good to see him start to get that three shooting on track later in this game. Hopefully, that carries over. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-15 shooting (5-13 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -3.
Hood-Schifino -- -- While he does look a little more confident and steady out there, the results have been fairly meh. He missed a lot of midrange and floaters. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-6 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists and 1 turnover in 13 minutes. He was a -6.
Bronny -- -- The crowd was cheering for him to get JJ to sub him in. Finally, he got in. He’d miss fire on some jumpers, but did score on a nice drive to his left. He also had a steal on a rotation (no credit for it) and a block from behind on D. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 block and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a -1.
Castleton -- -- Quiet preseason. I’d really like to see him more in the high post playmaking, but not a lot of that. He drew some FTs on an offensive board in garbage time. The Stats: He had 2 points on 0-2 shooting (2-2 form the line) to go with 2 offensive boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +2.
Reddish -- -- He hit a pull-up three in transition on his first shot. Then had a couple of turnovers, one a travel, then another on a bad pass. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -9.
Lewis -- -- He’s looked more comfortable out there and in more of a role not to have to force things. He had a nice drive down the lane with a couple of those long strides for a layup. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and no fouls in 6 minutes. He was a -1.
Redick -- -- If the first half was any indication, JJ gave the blueprint for his rotation. First off the bench was Christie for Bron, then Vincent in for AR and Hayes for Rui after about 7 minutes. When Russell sat, Bron would return to provide more playmaking. And, finally, as AD sat in the final minute, AR returned… In the second quarter, he went with the Hayes, Bron, Rui, Knecht, AR unit. A larger guard duo. Then, he’d rotate back in the other guys until closing the half with AD, Bron, Christie, Reaves and Russell like we’ve seen before… Right now, that looks like the 9-man rotation to expect to start the season… To start the second half, they sat AR for Christie to rest AR’s ankle… He kept his rotation until late in the third when Reddish came in before going to some of the other deep bench players. The Lakers were down by 8 at that point… The Lakers are shooting 29% from three in the preseason. That should improve once they get more organized… Redick said the ball stuck in guys hands too much. He thought it was stronger in the first half than the second. He said they didn’t trust it in the second half.. |

It's refreshing to see that he has a rotation set by this time. How obvious had it been the past few years that we entered the regular season without a clearly-defined rotation? I would assume Vando rounds out the 10-man rotation once he returns and, without regard to injuries, Wood maybe getting a shot months later if one of Hayes/Knecht/Christie don't pan out, assuming JHS/Reddish don't answer that call sooner. _________________ Luxury Tax/FA Spreadsheet (Save to your Google Drive to edit) |

The AD without LeBron lineups looked pretty good. They were running offense and putting up some resistance on defense. Maybe this won't be where we lose most of the games this year as opposed to last year. |

Looking forward to the day where the Lakers are actually serious about winning and not a bank account/charity case for a sports agency.
That day probably won’t come until Jeanie sells…so might be a while. |

I know the Lakers don't put much stock in the preseason, but winning is better than losing and it would be a nice change win once in a while...
My expectations are very low for this upcoming season, being a .500 team seems about right, the main thing is allowing LeBron to play along his son!
On the plus side, once they are down by 10 or more, I can watch some of the new season of TV shows starting up...
For having the 7th HIGHEST Salary, they will be lucky if they end up with the 15th best record! _________________ Do YOU control your Emotions? Or do your Emotions control YOU? |

PT is starting to get answers to what this roster will look like
JHS - G League
Lewis - G League
Castleton - G League
Bronny - G League
~ These players are playing for their next contract and/or team that they will play on next season. They having been making consistent impact on games and, at best, not a total loss.
We shall see how the "exciting" teams will do this season
~ Mavs - Adding Klay definite gets more talent on the team. How he will thrive on a team whose offense is based on ISOs where their (Luka/Kyrie) gravity will get Klay cleaner shot without movement
~ 76ers - Already PG is having injury issues, while they will have to load manage Embiid throughout the season
~ Thunder - talented talented talented team that based on talent (like last year) should go deep into the playoffs but who is the #1 option
~ Spurs - will be dangerous with CP3 playing with Wemby!
~ Knicks - will KAT appear or disappear
~ TWolves - will Randle stay and/or how wll he play with Gobert
~ Dubs - Steph/Dramond and a lot of good shooters who are encouraged to shoot 3s whenever/whereever they are free
~ Grizzs - the Ja Morant Saga
~ Nuggets - how healthy is Jamal Murray
~ Kings - DeMar DeRozan will take them to higher heights?
~ Bucks - how will Doc motivate this aging team
~ Pacers - upcoming team that needs more time |
