For sure, he's a long shot to ever contribute at the big league level, but hey, you never know! Maybe a 1-5% chance.

Yeah. First thing to wonder is if we protect him in the next Rule 5 draft. We didn't this past draft and no one took him, even with his .835 ops.

But then again, whoever takes him has to put him on their 26-man roster for the entire season, and no one wants that.

Cubs reportedly acquiring Ryan Pressly from the Astros. Pressly will apparently waive his no-trade clause, will get an assignment bonus, and will receive a new no-trade clause from the Cubs. Perhaps Bregman will return to Houston after all.

Cubs and Astros really working with each other this offseason. First Tucker, now Pressly.

Usually the anticipation of the Super Bowl keeps me somewhat satisfied before the MLB season starts but not this year. What a big led down.

For me once Colts season ended (in as bad as a way as it was) I began slowly getting myself ready for the 162 grind again.

Reminder: ST begins right after the SB.

SB = Sun, Feb 9th
ST = Mon, Feb 10th
First game = Feb 20th

Quote:
Dodgers pitchers & catchers report to spring training February 10, first full workout February 15.

So the IL opens up on Feb 10th, a bunch of players will be added and spots will open up on the 40-man roster.

If we’re planning on re-signing Kike, that would be the time.

In NFL I've always been a player fan than a team fan. Well technically I've always been a Raiders fan but its been some time now since I expected anything from them. Anyways going back to being a players fan, Colts were my team when Manning was there and then it was the Broncos. After he retired, it's was Matt Ryan and Falcons. After that I really don't have a team because I don't have a favorite player. Now it's just anyone against the Chiefs.

Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to baseball spring training more than the superbowl. It's not even spring training games. Just the fact that they are reporting to spring training excites me.

Bill Punkett thinks Dodgers won't re-sign Kike:

Quote:
"I'm not hearing his name from the Dodgers at all," Plunkett said.

"I don't see a need. The roster is pretty full. I don't know who you'd bounce off to make room for Kike. Maybe an extra outfielder like Andy Pages doesn't make the team because of Kike. I get the fan passion for Kike and wanting him back."

Quote:
"The personality that he brings, the fire that he brings to the clubhouse, I think that would be fine to add. I don't think there's a handshake agreement," he added.

"If I'm Kike, I certainly would wait till the very last second to give the Dodgers every chance you can. Where else would you want to play if you're Kike Hernandez?"

Quote:
"There are still moves they could make" - Bill Plunkett on Dodgers signing players besides Kike Hernandez

"Are they ever done?" Plunkett asked rhetorically.

"They'll grab up a player if it improves them marginally. I think that's why you're seeing Kirby Yates. I don't think they need Kirby Yates. But what the heck, he's available. Why not sign him and upgrade the bullpen a little bit?"

"I can see the same thing happen in the outfield group if somebody catches their fancy," he added.

"A guy like Austin Hays is still out there. He's got the reputation of being a lefty-killer. So, there are still moves they could make."

......................

Buster Olney feels re-signing Kike is incredibly important:

Quote:
“The season is so long,” Olney said in an interview with Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain.

“I think that if you’re a fan and you look at the players and you tune into one game and you imagine them having the same intensity that you did when you played little league, it’s not that way.”

“This is their daily job and they go through ups and downs like the rest of us do where some days you’re really into it and some days you’re not really into it,” Olney said.

[But, having energetic players like Hernández in the clubhouse can boost the team’s spirits throughout the long season.]

“And so to have personalities that bring energy to the park like Kiké, that’s incredibly important,” Olney said.

“I think you absolutely have to pick the right personalities for those spots at the end of your roster,” Olney said.

Basically Olney thinks of Kike as a cheerleader/jokester/dancer/mascot?

..........................

Kike's interview on The Shop (Dec 21, 2024):

(I think we did already post this, but I forget)

Quote:
"I wish I knew. If this was happening a month later, I’d have a better idea," Hernández said when asked where he'll be playing next season.

"Main priority for me would probably be coming back. I think this team, the Dodgers are very well positioned to make another run and be the first back to back team since the New York Yankees in ’99 and 2000.

If not them, then somewhere where the team is positioned to go on a deep run in October, because I need to have October baseball. That’s part of who I am. I’m kind of addicted to playoff baseball and I need that in my life.”

Jon Morosi on Kike, in that same article (Dec 21, 2024):

https://www.si.com/mlb/dodgers/news/dodgers-news-kike-hernandez-opens-up-on-free-agency-reveals-desires-for-next-team-01jfgfq8z6x1

Quote:
“I haven’t heard a ton in the last 24 hours about where he might land,” Morosi said at the Winter Meetings.

“I think part of that with the Dodgers, too, is they still have Chris Taylor, they just extended (Tommy) Edman, they still have Gavin Lux. I would say if they trade Lux, it creates s a clearer path for at-bats for Kiké on the the team at the moment.

“I still think it’s a really good for for Kiké with the Dodgers because you could tell how much the fans love him and vice versa,” Morosi said.

"But I think that we have to wait and see a few things play out first with the Dodgers’ plans before saying that Kiké has a clear path there. There’s probably other teams, honestly, that have a greater need for him right now.

The question, though, is would he actually want to go and sign somewhere else as long as the Dodger possibility is there?”

Well, we did end up trading Lux but only after we picked up Kim.

Yeah, keeping Taylor right now is head scratching. It's like we're going all out and going for it, yet still holding on to such a useless player.

It's like remodeling the entire kitchen but unwilling to change out the old drippy faucet?

Kirby Yates?

https://x.com/JeffPassan

1 year, $13M. I know nothing about him but his WHIP and ERA look devastating.

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes has put any uncertainty regarding reliever Michael Kopech to rest.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports previously reported the hard-throwing right-hander would miss the first month of the season due to an arm injury, but it turns out Gomes doesn’t know where that report came from.

“Kopy’s throwing and going through his offseason training program and he’s like everybody else,” Gomes said on the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast. “As guys come in, we’re gonna see where they’re at and making sure they’re progressing well but yeah, I’m not sure where the he’s definitely missing a month. We’re getting reports that Kopy’s throwing and feeling really good.”

Source confirms: The Dodgers and Kirby Yates are in agreement on a one-year, $13 million deal that earns him $500k each at 50 and 55 games pitched, which could bring it up to $14 million.

Love the Yates signing but maybe an overpay considering we already nabbed Scott to close but with Kelly (retiring?), Graterol down again, and Treinen aging we definitely need as many reinforcements for the pen as possible.

Looks like we’re really going for it this yr.

We won last yr with a very strong / lights out BP. We’re going with that recipe again.

Evan Phillips is going to be our 6th inning guy. Absolutely disgusting.

Hell yeah, totally sick that we are so loaded with high leverage arms! Is it fair to ask our staters to give us at least 6 quality innings per start to save the wear and tear for the fellas listed below.

6th: Phillips/Banda/Brasier
7th: Kopech/Vesia
8th: Yates/Treinen
9th: Scott

Guessing it might look something like the above but that's all TBD. Thinking one of Banda, Grove, or Brasier are moved by the start of camp to clear up the logjam.

Our Current 40-man roster plus projected 26-man opening day roster:

Quote:
Projected Opening Day 26-man roster:

Position Players:
1) Shohei Ohtani (DH)
2) Mookie Betts (SS)
3) Freddie Freeman (1B)
4) Teoscar Hernández (RF)
5) Max Muncy (3B)
6) Will Smith (C)
7) Michael Conforto (LF)
8) Tommy Edman (CF)
9) Hyeseong Kim (2B)

10) Chris Taylor (Bench)
11) Miguel Rojas (Bench)
12) Austin Barnes (Bench)
13) Andy Pages (Bench)

Starting Pitchers:
**** Roki Sasaki (not on the 40-man roster yet)
14) Tyler Glasnow
15) Blake Snell
16) Yoshinobu Yamamoto
17) Dustin May
18) Tony Gonsolin

Relievers:
19) Anthony Banda
20) Ryan Brasier
21) Kirby Yates
22) Michael Kopech
23) Evan Phillips
24) Blake Treinen
25) Alex Vesia
26) Tanner Scott
27) Brusdar Graterol

So right now, we have 28 players projected to make the opening day roster. We're going to have to trim it to 26. Graterol probably starts the season on the IL. We probably don't need 6 starters in the first month, and Gonsolin still has options, so Gonsolin might get optioned to start the year.

Also, if we sign Kike, then Pages will be optioned to the minors (unless we get rid of CT3).

Quote:
The Rest of the 40-man roster:

Likely Optioned to Minor Leagues:
28) Ben Casparius
29) Jack Dreyer
30) Michael Grove
31) Edgardo Henriquez
32) Landon Knack
33) Bobby Miller
34) Justin Wrobleski
35) Hunter Feduccia
36) James Outman

Likely Put on IL (opens up on Feb 10th):
37) Nick Frasso
38) Kyle Hurt
39) River Ryan
40) Gavin Stone
41) Emmet Sheehan

Yeah, looks like since we announced the Kirby Yates signing, we'll have to put him on the 40-man roster soon.

The IL won't up until Feb 10th, so we'll have to get rid of someone to make room for Kirby Yates. Right now, we have 40 (plus Yates), so we'll have 41 soon.

Yankees fans have to be pissed at Hal.

Over the last two years, the Yankees have spent under $300 million on free agents. The freaking DBacks have outspent them! They're playing like a poverty franchise, when they're still arguably the most valuable franchise in baseball. A total joke.
