Apparently the MLB adjusted the Ohtani rule since this was the first time a 2 way player was out a whole year without pitching due to TJ. Now he doesn't need to re-qualify to be a 2 way player.
Evan Phillips to begin the season on the IL as well:
Quote:
On Tuesday, right-handed reliever Evan Phillips told Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register that he’s still recovering from the shoulder injury that kept him off the World Series roster.
Plunkett said Phillips “seems likely” to open the 2025 season on the injured list.
Quote:
“I did not bounce back well after Game 6 (of the NLCS). I could tell something wasn’t right,” Phillips said to Plunkett.
“I felt better after a day’s rest. I took Monday off. Tuesday, I came in and felt confident about it. Played catch and it just didn’t go well.”
Phillips then underwent an MRI that showed a tear in his subscapularis, a tendon in the back of the shoulder.
Phillips’ injury didn’t allow him to have a normal offseason, as he didn’t pick up a baseball until Jan. 1. and is only throwing long toss this week. Plunkett called him a “long shot” to be ready for the Opening Series in Tokyo against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 and 19.
Quote:
“We’ll see how I progress, see how I bounce back,” Phillips said.
“I think it’s going to be a fluid progression at this point, based on how I respond. Things have been good so far. I’m just hoping that trend continues. … I should be on a mound soon here. From there, chip away at it. Maybe get in some games and we’ll see where we’re at.”
Let me update my opening day roster prediction for pitchers:
Quote:
Opening day 26-man roster (pitchers):
Starters:
1) Glasnow
2) Yamamoto
3) Snell
4) Sasaki
5) Gonsolin ($5.4M salary, won't be optioned)
6) Dustin May (out of options, will make the roster as a starter or reliever)
Relievers:
7) Anthony Banda (out of options but salary is only $1M)
8) Kirby Yates
9) Alex Vesia
10) Blake Treinen
11) Michael Kopech
12) Tanner Scott (Roberts said he will be our full-time closer)
13) ??????
..............................
Will join the rotation later in the year:
1) Ohtani (May 2025)
2) Kershaw (Jul/Aug 2025)
Optioned to minor leagues:
1) Ben Casparius
2) Jack Dreyer
3) Michael Grove
4) Edgardo Henriquez
5) Landon Knack
6) Bobby Miller
7) Justin Wrobleski
Veterans on minor league contracts:
1) Giovanny Gallegos
IL (Injury List):
1) Brusdar Graterol ($2.8M salary, 2 minor league options left)
2) Evan Phillips
3) Gavin Stone
4) Emmet Sheehan
5) River Ryan
6) Kyle Hurt
7) Nick Frasso
Looks like we now have one spot open for a pitcher.
Our BP in the post season was so good that I completely forgot about Phillips missing the WS. Also Treinen doesn't get enough credit for the WS game 5. Without his performance we could have lost that game. Imo he was more important than Buehler's last 3 outs.
Oft-injured Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is having hip surgery and is expected to miss a significant amount of time, general manager Perry Minasian said Wednesday.

It’s not even funny anymore at this point.
Really sad......dude seemed as reliable as you could possibly be entering his free agency. Im sure the Dodgers would have signed him if he wanted them too at the time....but dude actually preferred the Angels over the Dodgers at the time. This one I really dont blame on the incompetence of the Angels. Anyone would have made the Rendon mistake.

Angels' fortune turned for the bad when they gave out that ridiculous long contract to Albert Pujols when he was clearly out of his prime window. Angels was in postseason almost every year leading up to that, they were never the same after that.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto is likely to start for the Los Angeles Dodgers when they open the season against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo on March 18 and Roki Sasaki could make his major league debut the next day.
This has me super nervous.
Yamamoto n Sasaki will be hyped to pitch these games. This is one month away and they barely reported yesterday.
Pitchers shouldn’t ramp up in 30 days to pitch in a “playoff type” game.
I think these 2 will be approaching these Japanese games like it’s a playoff/WBC level game.

both should be approaced as bullpen games. with Yamamoto and Sasaki pitch as openers for 3 innings then hand it off to either a 6th starter or long reliver.

Ideally.
Still makes me nervous that ~34 days from now both will be pitching real games where tickets are more expensive than WS tickets.
These games are a BIG BIG deal.
To put it into perspective, I just looked at our ST schedule:
From Feb 20th to Mar 11th, we have 19 games in 20 days.
So Yamamoto and Sasaki have 20 days to get ready to pitch in a regular season game.

Looks like Kopech is behind schedule as well, and likely will begin the season on the IL, along with Phillips. That would open up another roster spot. We'll be shuffling guys on and off the IL all year, almost certainly, to account for the roster crunch.

Bregman to the Red Sox. Three years, $120MM, but with 2 opt-outs. Gotta think that Tristan Casas is on the trade block now, with Devers moving to first base for 2025. I suppose they could try to get someone to take on Yoshida's bad contract, and perhaps DH Casas for a year, but I'm guessing that they will try to flip him for some pitching.

Wonder what was he looking for?
I think something like 7 years $200M+
I think Astros offered him 6 for $150M+ so this is a much better deal.

Looks like Toronto offered 7/170, and 3/120 is a much better deal than that, especially since he can opt out after 2025 or 2026.
Keith Law thinks our first pick (#36) from 2 years ago (2023) will be a bust:
Quote:
18. Kendall George, OF
Height: 5-10 | Weight: 170 | Bats: L | Throws: L | Age: 20
George was the Dodgers’ first pick (No. 36) in the 2023 draft, because of his athleticism and 80 speed, with the potential for plus defense in center.
He has no power at all, hitting .279/.384/.328 last year in a decent hitter’s park, with a single homer in 86 games. The slugging percentage probably overstates his power, since he had four triples, and that’s about speed more than thump.
I don’t see any path for him to be a regular with this little strength.
He could see the majors, because the speed plays and the defense is good enough for him to be a late-inning replacement, but I think hard-throwing pitchers will just knock the bat out of his hands.
Keith Law likes Ben Casparius. Looks like he was drafted in 2021 in the 5th rd as a starter. It hasn't worked out as a starter so we moved him to the BP and he's taken off:
Quote:
17. Ben Casparius, RHP
Height: 6-2 | Weight: 215 | Bats: R | Throws: R | Age: 26
Casparius was a nondescript minor-league starter in the Dodgers’ system until they dropped him in the bullpen in August, and suddenly he was blowing 97 by guys with a plus slider and 3,000 rpms on both that and the curveball.
His stuff jumped about 2 mph from 2023 to 2024, and as a result he started using his fastball more, replacing his slider as his primary pitch and helping him cut his walk rate.
He had no platoon split last year, but there’s no clear pitch here for lefties and I’m not sure that lack of a platoon split would last if he returned to starting.
He was so good in relief I’d just leave him there and see if he can develop the command to be an eighth inning/leverage type.
Let's see how he does this ST. He might earn a spot on the 26-man opening day roster since we're down so many arms to start the year: (Graterol, Phillips, Kopeck).

Keith Law is very high on our first rd pick last year, Kellon Lindsey (#23).
I didn't know that he received the 2nd highest draft bonus ever given by the Dodgers:
Quote:
Lindsey was drafted in the first round of the 2024 Major League Baseball draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He signed with the Dodgers on July 23, 2024 for a $3.3 million signing bonus, the second highest ever for a Dodgers draft pick (behind Zach Lee).
Quote:
6. Kellon Lindsey, SS(Just missed the Top 100 rankings)
Height: 6-2 | Weight: 175 | Bats: R | Throws: R | Age: 19
Lindsey was a tough omission from the top 100 because he clearly has the tools to be a top-100 guy, or even a top-50 guy, but the main question from before the draft on him remains unanswered: how is he going to fare against pro-quality breaking stuff?
Lindsey is an 80 runner who looks a ton like Trea Turner at the same age, and he’s an above-average or better defender at shortstop who could easily slide to center field and probably be plus there on Day 1. He has a good swing for extra-base power with quick hands and wrists, with at least average power upside as he fills out.
He really did not pick up offspeed stuff in the spring, even playing against weak competition at a rural Florida high school, and MLB’s inane decision to move the complex leagues up in the calendar meant that he didn’t have anywhere official to play after he signed.
If he shows he can pick up spin better in 2025 than he did before the draft, he’s going to be in the top 50 at midseason, because it’s tools all day and a good swing to produce quality contact.
