Good info here. Disappointing if George proves to be a zero with the bat, but as you said, you just can't hit on everyone.

It was reported (I can't remember if it was Buster Olney or Jon Heyman who had it first) that there are significant deferrals in the Bregman deal with Boston, which might lower the AAV as it will be calculated to more like $30MM a year instead of $40MM. But perhaps Toronto's 6/170 offer also had deferrals.

Bregman's deal with the Red Sox also takes away another potential Nolan Arenado destination. St. Louis might be down to the Tigers or Yankees, and what if he doesn't want to waive his NTC to go there? I'm sure he'd love to join the Dodgers, but we may not want him even at a highly-reduced price. And I would understand that. Muncy has been a vastly-superior hitter over the past 2 seasons, and if he's not traded, it requires you to place him at second base, and I'm just not sure that you can have a double play combo of Betts and Muncy and expect that to work in the postseason. Arenado may be left to decide whether or not he wants to stay with a team going into a rebuild, or joining a contender that's east of where he wants to play.

Kershaw's deal is now official. It guarantees him $7.5MM, with another $8.5MM available via incentives. The incentives...

--$2.5MM for 30 days on the active roster

--$1MM for 60 days on the active roster

--$1MM for 90 days on the active roster

--$1MM each for 13, 14, 15, and 16 games started

So it looks like he gets $2.5MM less of a guarantee from what he could have collected before he opted out, which gives the Dodgers some savings in case he can't get healthy. But if he merely can for a month, he's made whole with the $10MM again. And then, if he could actually have better health than he did last year, he'll make more.

Let's compare it to the player option he opted out of:

https://apnews.com/article/kershaw-dodgers-contract-c8edb5527ac0d20a72a0f623c4b59e04

Quote:
Guarantee: $10M

Incentives: $15M max

Total: $25M max

Gurantees:

Quote:
Kershaw has a $5 million player option for 2025, which if he is healthy at the end of the 2024 season can escalate by $15 million based on the same criteria of starts or relief outings of three or more innings:

$2 million for six

$3 million each for seven
, eight and nine, and

$4 million for 10.

Since Kershaw made 7 appearances last year, he earned $2M for 6, and another $3M for the 7th appearance. Total guarantees = $5M + $5M = $10M

Incentives:

Quote:
— if seven [appearances] in 2024, Kershaw could earn up to $15 million in 2025: $1 million each from 11-25;

Quote:
His maximum 2025 compensation is $25 million, the agreement says.

So Kershaw could have earned $25M on his original player option if he made 24 starts (very very unlikely since we're on a 6-man rotation and he won't come back until Jul-Aug 2025).

Realistically, if all goes well and he stays healthy, I see him making 12 starts this yr. So his original deal was realistically going to earn him an extra $2M in incentives ($1M for starts #11 and 12), and ~$12M total.

The new deal basically pays him $12M if he makes 12 starts this year as well. So it's kind of a wash.

And if he makes starts #13, 14, 15, and 16, both deals would pay him an extra $1M for those starts.

Note:
One interesting note is that the original deal said he only needs to make an "apperance of 3ip or more". This one seems to say he needs to start. And I don't even know how long he needs to start for.

Here's Eno Sarris' projections for our staff this year (he's the guy who does Stuff+, Pitching+, etc for The Athletic). While this is aimed at fantasy, I've found that his "Stuff" ratings are extremely accurate as to how guys will end up doing, and have become a larger part of the info you can find for guys on Fangraphs.

Proj. IP 141
ppERA 3.29
ppK% 30.9%

Once a pitcher is over 1000 innings into their career -- heck once a pitcher is over 10 starts into his career -- Stuff+ should not be the only metric used to judge them. At this point, we have plenty of seasons where the lefty has shown he can strike out nearly a third of the batters he sees, keep the ball in the park, and suppress hits. He does alternate healthy seasons with less healthy ones, but he's also bottomed out at a respectable 104 innings and was almost a top 50 pitcher last year. He might lead this injury risk Dodger squad in innings, even.

Quote:
15 Tyler Glasnow

107 Stuff+
3.02 ppERA

Giving Tyler Glasnow this ranking along with 128 projected innings might be folly, but the dude was the 24th-best fantasy pitcher last year with only 134 innings, and he could actually be even better in 2025 -- in fact practically every projection system says his ERA will be lower than the 3.49 he showed last year. SIERA, a reliable ERA estimator, said he should've had a number south of three last year. If he just re-racks what he did last year with a better ERA, he'll easily be worth this rank.

The revelation that Roki Sasaki considered having Tommy John in Japan but chose not to was a little troublesome in light of his declining stuff and velocity loss last year in that league. It seems likely he will end up missing significant time in the next few seasons, and that it's just a question of when, not if. Then there are the questions about his stuff: his fastball shape is meh, his breaking balls aren't great, and he doesn't have great spin or feel for it. But 100-120 innings of peak Kevin Gausman as a floor doesn't seem all that bad anyway.

Proj. IP 109
ppERA 3.20
ppK% 31.4%

Quote:
24 Yoshinobu Yamamoto

93 Stuff+
3.38 ppERA

After being largely healthy and incredibly dominant in Japan, Yoshinobu Yamamoto came to MLB and missed half the season with injury… but still was pretty dominant. Maybe his excellent results were slightly more a result of command than stuff, but that was always part of the package anyway. It's not like he's a soft-tosser, with a 95.6 mph fastball, it's just that none of his pitches is an elite combo of velocity and shape. The good news is that the Dodgers found him a good slider, the bad news is that the Dodgers will end up limiting his innings via the six-man rotation even if he's fully healthy in 2025.

I don’t know how they can project how Ohtani’s going to recover from 2nd major elbow surgery.

To me, that’s always been a death sentence but people seem to treat it like it’s his first.

I’m really skeptical how Ohtani will be as a pitcher now. (Fingers crossed).

Also, the write-up on Sasaki was deflating to read:

Quote:

Kershaw will eventually be placed on the 60-Day IL but, in something of a surprise, might be ready to go shortly after that, meaning that his potential return could come in June, rather than July or later.

River Ryan was placed on the 60-Day IL in the corresponding roster move, btw.

Bregman to the Red Sox. Three years, $120MM, but with 2 opt-outs. Gotta think that Tristan Casas is on the trade block now, with Devers moving to first base for 2025. I suppose they could try to get someone to take on Yoshida's bad contract, and perhaps DH Casas for a year, but I'm guessing that they will try to flip him for some pitching.

Sounds like Bregman will be playing 2B.

Quote:
Bregman moves to second base

Not only has Bregman been a third baseman for most of his career, but he’s been stellar at the position, winning a Gold Glove Award in 2024.

However, the Red Sox have star slugger Rafael Devers entrenched at the hot corner, and nowhere else to put him based on the team’s current roster.

Power-hitting Triston Casas, who finished third in the American League’s Rookie of the Year voting two years ago, is the first baseman.

Masataka Yoshida, who has three years left on his five-year, $90 million contract, projects as the primary DH.

Bregman is known for his athleticism and likely wouldn’t have any trouble transitioning to second base, a position he’s played nine times in the Majors, including two starts.

Manager Alex Cora -- who was the bench coach for the Astros in 2017 -- discussed the scenario of Bregman moving to second base at the Winter Meetings two months ago.

Quote:
“We actually had that conversation in '17 when I was with the Astros. We made some adjustments at third base, kind of like where he was playing because he was feeling uncomfortable.

"At the end, it paid off for him,” Cora said on Dec. 9.

“He's a Gold Glove defender at third. I always envisioned him playing in the middle of the diamond, and those were conversations in '17. He can adjust, and he has a baseball IQ to do that. People might think the double play might be an issue. I don't believe so. I think he can do whatever.”

Quote:
Stat of the Week: Alex Bregman Fills A Big Hole Amid Position Switch

Red Sox second basemen had a very rough year last year. If Bregman can handle the position, this represents a massive upgrade.

The Red Sox signing of Alex Bregman takes the most prominent remaining free agent position player off the board and sets up an intriguing scenario in Boston for 2025.

The Red Sox will not play Bregman at third base, where he won a Gold Glove last year, but will instead play him at second base, where he’s played 32 professional innings and none since 2018.

The game will play a bit slower for Bregman, as being farther from home plate will give him more time to make plays. He’ll also need to be adept at turning the double play with a baserunner coming towards him or sliding into the base.

Wow, well, that changes their plans, I guess. But I don't think it's best for their team. The guy is a vacuum cleaner at third, and Devers is terrible there. Interesting.

It might be that Devers just wants to stay at third. It wouldn't be the first time that the tenured guy stays even when he's a worse defensive option (see: Jeter / ARod)

Looks like Passan confirms it:

The expectation is Alex Bregman will play second base for Boston, sources tell ESPN. Even though the Red Sox have top prospect Kristian Campbell coming, they saw Bregman having enough of an impact that they offered $40 million a year — with deferrals — to make the deal happen.

We made a signing in free agency: a minor league deal with right-handed reliever Luis Garcia. If he sounds familiar, it's because he does have a lot of big league experience. He's 37 and was with the Padres for a couple of seasons before signing with the Angels before last season. He was having a decent season, enough to where the Halos got a couple of prospects from the Red Sox for him at the trade deadline, although he then fizzled badly for Boston after the deadline. Still, with a couple of spots possibly open in the early season bullpen, this is a good flier signing. Of course, we have another experienced big league reliever in camp on a minor league deal in Giovanni Gallegos.

Yeah I thought they jumped the gun not waiting until Feb 10th to sign Yates.

That way, we keep Brasier and now he’d be useful for us.

We could always trade him when the roster became full again at some point in the season.

Now we need to find a couple xtra serviceable arms.

Yates must not have been willing to wait that long and wanted to lock it in, or else he was going to probably sign elsewhere.

Wonder what was he looking for?

I think something like 7 years $200M+

I think Astros offered him 6 for $150M+ so this is a much better deal.

Red Sox say Bregman will play second. However their gm has stated he doesn't want to block their young guys. Casas would be a fit with the Padres who are reportedly shopping Cease and or King. Story would also be an option as they are putting Bogaertz back at short though he can't field the position any more. So Bogaertz would go back to second and Cromenworth back to first. But I doubt the Padres take his money ( Story).

I don't have cable or satellite -- just streaming. What's the best way to get Dodger games? I currently just have the YouTube TV package, which doesn't carry them.

I use MLB.Tv. But you may be blacked out if you’re in SoCal, it just depends where you are exactly. The app/website should tell you. If it does work, every smart tv carries it and it’s on your phone. You can get a team specific package for cheaper than the entire league package. It’s only for the regular season though. But that should be fine for you because the playoffs will be on channels like Fox, so YouTube TV should handle it.

If you’re blacked out, you can do a VPN and chrome cast it to your TV. It won’t help with the smart tv app though (as you probably know).

Yeah, Dodgers & Angels both blacked out for me (I'm in south OC).

I own TVs but almost never use them unless I'm watching something with my wife. Usually sports are on my computer, so VPN is an option. Well, a VPN that lets me hide my location, anyway.

Bonus points if you're a T-Mobile subscriber as they generally give out MLB.TV for free (for a limited time) at the beginning the season.

Friedman has confirmed that the Dodgers will go with a 5-man rotation until Ohtani returns to pitch. This means we'll have an 8-man bullpen until then.

Kodi with a couple sports addons. I am using an Android box but you can probably install on a fire stick or directly to your smart tv tho I wouldn't recommend it. Haven't missed a game I wanted to watch in years. Or you could get an IPTV sub and run thru Tivimate or a similar client directly to your smart tv. I did this for a while but the company I was dealing with preferred wanted PayPal and I could no longer use that in my location.

Probably washed but Rosario was a major thorn on our side back in '21. Insurance in case Conforto flames out our we move on from Taylor.

Usually these signings are for injuries. Someone gets injured, we call them up and then they get DFA’d when the roster gets healthy again.

Think of a Nick Amed or Cavan Biggio.
