Roki Sasaki feels the pressure with the Dodgers ahead of his first start Wednesday against the Cubs

The young Japanese pitcher is ready to show what he has, and in front of his own country's fans

…….

One of them is the Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki, who looks a little nervous these days, as he has been chosen as the starter in the second game against the Chicago Cubs next Wednesday at the Tokyo Dome.

…….

Sasaki is also positive about being in the spotlight with the World Series champion team and also in front of his hometown fans in his MLB debut:

Quote:
"I can't believe my dream has come true at the Tokyo Dome, it's like a miracle."

Yup, I don’t like this at all.

He’s really amped up for this start and it’s too early to be this amped up.

2 ST starts for him so far?

Sounds like he’s treating this like a playoff game, or the WBC.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him reach back and throw his hardest, whether it be 102mph or whatever.

Plus, remember, he’s still getting used to mlb baseballs. Japanese baseballs are different. Lots of Japanese pitchers struggle to the different baseballs in their first year.

So he’s dealing with:

Quote:
- unfamiliarity with mlb hitters

- unfamiliarity with mlb baseballs

- lack of a proper ST (only 2 starts)

- treating this game like it’s a playoff/WBC game

- pressure he puts on himself to perform in front of his home country

^^yeah he might get blown up like Yoshi did last year in Korea. Hopefully that’s worst case scenario and not an injury because he’s throwing too hard. I’ll be totally fine with whatever the results are. Could be a 13-12 game like last year during Yoshi’s start.

Or glass half full: he thrives on the biggest moment and throws a complete gem

Yeah I’m only worried about injuries. Results are fine to me, bad or good.

It takes time to get adjusted to mlb. I just rather he not be throwing 100mph+ right now with max spin rate on every pitch.

- Reported to camp around Feb 15th,
- Had 2 ST starts in a month,
- and now pitching the biggest game of his career on Mar 19th.

The timeline is just so crazy when u think about it.

Betts is so sick, he’s lost nearly 15 lbs:

Manager Dave Roberts said Monday that Betts is starting to feel better but has lost nearly 15 pounds and is still trying to get rehydrated and gain strength. Roberts added that the eight-time All-Star might fly back to the United States before the team in an effort to rest and prepare for the domestic opener on March 27.

The Cubs and Dodgers open the Major League Baseball season on Tuesday at the Tokyo Dome. A second game is on Wednesday.

Quote:
"He's not going to play in these two games," Roberts said. "When you're dehydrated, that's what opens a person up to soft tissue injuries. We're very mindful of that."

……….

Roberts said Miguel Rojas will start at shortstop in Betts' place for the two games at the Tokyo Dome.

Betts started suffering from flu-like symptoms at the team's spring training home in Arizona, the day before the team left for Japan. He still made the long plane trip, but hasn't recovered as quickly as hoped.

Roberts said if the team had known the illness would linger this long, he wouldn't have traveled. Betts tried to go through a workout on Sunday, but became tired quickly.

Curious but why is Betts dehydrated? Having the Flu prevents him from drinking water?

Not a doctor, but my guess is that any fluids he's putting in his body is vacating his body just as fast (ie...he's probably got a bad case of the runs)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, like diarrhea. I just didn't know that's one of the symptoms of a flu. I thought that's associated with some sort of food poisoning.

Also, shouldn’t he be in the hospital hooked up to an IV if he’s losing that much fluids?

Dave Roberts does make it sound serious:

Diarrhea can be a symptom of either one (flu or food poisoning).

But I don’t recall ever losing close to 15 pounds when I was sick. That is so much weight it would have me concerned.

Hardball version of Donald Sterling.

I hate the fact the opener is at 3am. It’s fine for Japan obviously, just annoying.

Freddie has been scratched from the lineup. Kike is playing 1B and Conforto is now in there in LF. No reason given for the absence yet.

EDIT: David Vassegh just tweeted that Freeman was scratched due to left rib discomfort. Says that he was taking part in BP before the game, and may have felt something then. Recall that he supposedly hurt his ribs pretty badly in the leadup to the postseason last year, after the badly sprained ankle. It's a long season, so if he's not right, hell, let him heal up. However long it takes.

Yamamoto looks nervous. He looked nervous when they showed him waiting in the top of the inning too. Hopefully his stuff is good enough today that it doesn’t matter.

Edit: Okay pretty good first inning and some of his pitches looked nasty.

You know we're back when I'm already complaining about Will Smith's pitch selection LOL. On the double that gave the Cubs a run, Amaya had swung at the previous pitch and missed it by a foot, a splitter. So of course he throws him a fastball on the next pitch.

Yamamoto is through 3 innings and the stuff looks great, but he's not sharp. They've gotten a man into scoring position in all 3 innings, and despite the fact that he's had two strikes on most of the hitters, he's only put one of them away. Getting a lot of swings and misses, especially on the splitter, but not with two strikes.

Yamamoto has been much sharper the past 2 innings. He might even go back out for the 6th because his pitch count is pretty good, but maybe we'll just play it safe and take him out now.

Wow, a scoreless 7th from Casparius, who hit 99 in the AB against Crow-Armstrong and then struck him out with 98 at the belt on the next pitch. I don't remember him with that velocity last year. Interesting!

Treinen hits Berti, who steals second base, but nothing further in a scoreless 8th. Still 3-1.

The Cubs had one runner reach base after the third inning, and that was on a hit by pitch. 1-0, folks!
