No. 21... Unfortunately, the Lakers couldn’t get win number 21 after they hung jersey number 21 in the rafters at halftime.

Back to playing ball after the game cancellations from the fires. The energy in this game was not there in the last 15 or so minutes of action.

Laker turnovers allowed the Spurs to get some easy points in transition early on (9 in the first half). Austin Reaves gave the Lakers a great shift midway through the second quarter, setting up teammates or scoring himself. They rattled off a 14-5 run and took a 62-53 lead into the half.

At halftime, they retired Michael Cooper’s jersey, hanging between Magic and Worthy. Coop is one of my all-time favorites. His game and defensive versatility is still something every championship contender could use.

“There is no one way to greatness,” Pat Riley said. “Greatness is the way.”

“When I picked up a basketball, that was the love of my life,” Cooper said.

Out of the half, the Spurs rattled off an 8-1 run. The Lakers fought back to push it back to 10 again. But late in the third, they gave up three straight dunks and a couple of layups on a Spurs 10-0 run and we were all tied 89-89 heading into the fourth.

Hayes, LeBron, Knecht, Reddish and Vincent lineup to start the fourth. Two more layups to open the quarter for the Spurs, and the Lakers eventually called a timeout down 6. The Spurs were +22 in points in the paint with 9 minutes left to go as we brought AD back in to help man the middle.

The Spurs methodically attacked the mismatches from switches, while the Lakers struggled to score on the other end. The Spurs had a 25-9 first 8 minutes of the fourth quarter. The Lakers faded into the night, unable to get energy up. They were outscored 73-40 in the second half as they fell 126-102.

LeBron -- -- The team has looked sluggish. Bron had 8 assists with 7 turnovers. The offense dragged. The energy dragged. Their last game offensively wasn’t great, either. We’ll give them a pass for this one with the time off and all that was going on in the city. We couldn’t get the energy required in the second half. They need Bron thinking the game at a high level. Everything was off tonight. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-11 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 7 turnover and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -15.

Davis -- -- He picked up a foul a few seconds into the game on a perimeter reach. And at the end of the first half, he picked up his third foul going over the back of a player in transition. Really undisciplined fouls, not like him. But that put him and the team into a little trouble. He’d pick up his fourth late in the third. He was good in the post against smaller defenders. He attacked past and threw Wemby a couple of times, playing more physical. Just needed more of that. The fouls probably slowed him a little defensively, but we struggled mightily while he sat early in that fourth quarter. The Stats: He scored 30 points on 13-18 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 13 boards (8 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -21.

Reaves -- -- Great shift in the second quarter that allowed the team to build a double-digit lead. He was aggressive, got into the paint for buckets or to draw the D and find teammates. Second half was the opposite. He missed everything. Really wasn’t a factor. They’ve got to have impact ball from him and need guys who can get into the paint to collapse the D. Let down tonight. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-14 shooting (2-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 8 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -18.

Hachimura -- -- The three ball was dropping for him early on as he made his first three attempts. Other than the threes, not a lot going on for Rui tonight. Early on we gave him a couple possessions in the post against smaller players and he missed on one and threw the ball away on the other. Defensively, a couple of steals but we play better when you also get that occasional defensive play challenging at the rim. We didn’t have good rim protection. “It didn’t feel like we had a low-man presence,” JJ said. We really need higher energy impact from him. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-6 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -16.

Christie -- -- Some great looks all night, but he only hit a couple of threes. He had a nice And-1 dunk cutting off Bron’s post (also finished a lob on the break). There was play late in the game where Max was wanting to backdoor cut on the baseline and Bron threw it to where Max had been in the corner. Just off all night, even on a play we usually run perfectly. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-11 shooting (2-8 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 31 minutes. He was a -13.

Finney-Smith -- -- We went to him late to cover CP3 for the inevitable switch onto Barnes after cycling through a few other players. Barnes scored on him, as well. I liked the idea there, but we were down big by then. Offensively, he sank a three on his first attempt in transition from the corner. That was his only bucket. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-4 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -13.

Hayes -- -- Really poor job anchoring the paint while AD sat early in the fourth. This was after a good stretch of energy ball in his first shift in the first half. But with foul trouble, we could have used some better effort there in the backup spot. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -4.

Vincent -- -- The 3 turnovers with just 1 assist isn’t going to replace that missing production Russell brought. But he was able to knock down a three, knock down a pull-up from midrange and score a putback. A lazy pass at midcourt that was taken for a dunk late in the third seemed to be one of those plays where the tide was turning. It was kind of all downhill from there. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 17 minutes.

Reddish -- -- Awful touch around the rim at times. He choked a point blank layup in the fourth and wasn’t close on another 3-footer. Awful shooting tonight. He made one three, but airballed another. He was a -11 in 15 minutes. Painful. This is the kind of game where you could see JJ maybe rethinking the rotation now that he has Milton in the mix. Different games, but Cam was just too big a negative. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-7 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 4 boards and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -11.

Knecht -- -- He didn’t knock down a three. His one bucket was on a great steal of a CP3 pass to take it the distance for an And-1 dunk. His offensive integration was very much an afterthought in this one. We really need to find more opportunities to play to his strengths when he’s out there. Defensively, not as big of a problem in this one. CP3 did hit a big three over him, but he also battled well against Wemby on some possessions. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-5 shooting (0-4 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -1.

Olivari -- -- He came in for garbage time. This after the Lakers were tied entering the fourth quarter. They just got crushed. He missed a couple of attempts from three. The Stats: He was 0-2 from three and had 1 assist in 2 minutes. He was a -5.

Redick -- -- He lost his house to the fires. Several other Laker staff lost houses, as well. Rough week for the organization… JJ thought the Laker three shooting would be strong with all the time off. The other side of that is that you can get sloppy with your execution, and the Laker showed that, as well… Poor job attacking drop coverage by the Lakers at times. Some of the play calls led to turnovers (did they have a clean lob pass in the half court?)… Starters back in with 9 minutes left in the fourth. Their offense again struggled, but the Spurs got easy automatic switches to exploit and stretched their lead to 13 midway through the quarter. (Add in the Lakers were out of fouls early in the quarter.)… The Lakers lost the fourth 37-13. The Lakers gave up 73 points in the second half, the most this season…

The highlight of the game was right after the final buzzer, when Wemby and CP3 went over to sign some jerseys and take some pictures with JJ's kids

And how they were more excited to see CP3

No energy, no urgency and a seemingly casual attitude against an inferior team. Again. Just like last season when they turned a favorable January schedule into a stretch that torpedoed their season.

I know they may not have been all there emotionally, but there is no excuse for us to lose the way we did.

Thanks DB. Excellent write up on a stinker of a game.

Disorganized offense, no rim protection.

CP3 and JJ were teammates with the Clips.

Woke up and waited to watch the replay without checking the score. Then luckily stumbled upon a post on reddit bemoaning the blowout. Which saved me the trouble of watching this pathetic effort. This team is beyond saving.

The LA gods must have forgotten there were two LA teams playing last night.

Whatever happened, they have been most cruel to SoCal.

"Wemby being on the court, you have to kind of decide how you want to play coverage ... The point of attack just wasn't good tonight. It feels like there's no one in the paint for us." (J.J. Reddick)

With DFS on the court, Lakers are 2-4

With LBJ playing the 4 and Rui playing the 3, which one is a rim protector?

If/When Vando is on the court and effective, will he be effective enough of the Lakers' "Point of Attack" on defense?

When will Vincent be effective as the "Point of Attack" on defense?

Understand the difficulties of playing effective basketball with all the horrific fires affecting numberous members of the Lakers, including J.J.

Thanks DB!

Both Bron and AD lead by example, not vocally. We needed them with what JJ is going through.

Bron = 7 turnovers

AD = foul trouble

Lakers = followed their leaders with undisciplined play
