Sophomore Trey Jemison (who was waived from a two-way slot by the Pelicans recently) was picked up on the same type of deal with the Lakers after they cut Quincy Olivari.
Trey is 6'11" and 260 pounds according to BasketballReference.com, so he has some height and size that our squad has woefully been missing for years in the back up center slot. He's 25 years old, but might still be raw since he's bounced around a bit. Hopefully the coaches and older players can get something productive from him this season and beyond.
Some highlights from his rookie season:
He has some athleticism for a two-way player of size... I'll give him that. He needs to stay healthy though as he has been injury prone. One offensive curiosity about his game is that he seems to love the baby hook shot.

Here are a few quotes that I found from random NBA fans who have watched Jemison play more games than we have:
Quote:
I liked Trey with the hospital Grizz last year. He is a third stringer without a doubt, but he has good effort and great vibes with enough size to be useful.

Trey Jemison has size and agility and can defend the perimeter and paint. He doesn't have much of a history and has zero offensive value, but he can defend better than Valanciunas. There is plenty of offense on this team to replace whatever is lost. He didn't play a ton in Memphis given their depth at big, but he performed well when he played. He also put up 12 rebounds and 2 blocks a game in the G League for the Pels two years ago so management is confident what they are getting.
Quote:
Jemison can be an average defender and rebounder, but he's useless offensively.
There are 5 important things from the center position: Rim protection, perimeter defense, 3 point shooting, rebounding, and passing. Jemison is maybe a slight upgrade in rim protection and an upgrade in perimeter defense, but he's definitely worse than Valanciunas in the other 3 categories.

It doesnt matter what he can do. It's on JJ, he will not gamble with him and koloko when Hayes is healthy. Specially if they will take up some rui minutes.
Not getting this, Hayes, Koloko, Traore and now Trey… we should already consolidate them, too many projects for aging AD/Bron _________________ “The main goal for the Lakers is to win a championship. All I care about, all we care about, is to raise another banner in the rafters.“

Now wearing No. 14 for the purple and gold, Haylokotreyore.... do it Rob!!!
(While Wood weeps quietly in the shadowed corner).
That’s my Ingramtula Jersey, I’ll tape his name _________________ “The main goal for the Lakers is to win a championship. All I care about, all we care about, is to raise another banner in the rafters.“
There is nothing Trey does that you'd take him over Hayes or Wood for.
He has size.. that's it.
If we were going to work on him we should have moved Traore. But alas.
Usually, I have something positive to say about his game or any player no matter how obscure that we get especially when I've seen their play outside of highlights, but I compare him to what we already have. The only thing he has over Hayes and Wood is size, and it's not like that has made a difference in his career to this point, you'd rather have Wood or Hayes to do everything else.
Whats something positive... he has a hook shot.. I guess. He hustles... I guess.
Again, nothing that I or any other person would be picking him over Hayes or Wood for. Maybe Koloko, but we aren't prioritizing Koloko over Hayes or Wood either.
If the Lakers had cut Traore for him I'd understand that a lot better. Cutting Olivari for him is a move of idiocy.
What I expect to happen is a few months to go by, maybe even the end of the season, and then him to be cut or maybe be seen in summer league, till he isn't utilized and eventually cut and he'll have done nothing for the Lakers outside of a few dunks for South Bay, and it will continue to make no sense why they moved Olivari for him.
The Lakers have now cut two wing three-level scorers/shooters for bigs that amount to nothing more than hustlers and lob threats which won't fit well into JJ's system or already won't be prioritized over the bigs we already have so fill no hole that is missing or that we need more of. Meanwhile we watch the Lakers bench scoring get worse and worse and worse as the year goes on and we're getting rid of wing players that CAN score from developmental, even if it's the only thing they do and have upside for bigs that at best are single digit scorers off the bench that hustle\ and don't do much else.
If Traore develops, there's no reason to keep Trey. It just makes no sense and there's nothing in Trey's game that puts him over the centers/bigs we already have. Again, I'd like to find something positive about the move, but when compared to what we already have, this is a move that means nothing, and we got rid of a player that could mean something, for one that we already know chances are won't amount to much against what we already have. That is what has transpired. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

Almost like Pelinka made this signing so it would shut Laker fans up about needing a backup C. _________________ Lakers used to average one championship every four years under Dr. Buss but I'd gladly take one every ten years now.
