If Rob fumbles building around Luka this summer, it is possible Luka walks summer 2027. He has an opt out. Gotta take the chance to get a guy like Luka if it pops up, but there is a lot more work to be done. I personally think it would be really really dumb to make a desperate move this week to try to compete this season. There isn't a lot of time left for the team to gel. Unless something really obvious is available that we haven't seen yet, Lakers should see how Luka plays with guys like Rui, AR, Vando, etc, and move into the off season with a better idea of what to try to fill in around Luka. Lakers would also have an idea of what Lebron wants to do. If he wants to be sign and traded to someone else like the Dubs, then the Lakers can take into account any assets we get from that to make additional moves.
Edit: meant to say it is possible Luka walks summer 2026.
If he doesn’t sign extension this summer, we have to trade him. The most financially beneficial route for him is to sign a 2+1 and sign the super max with us in 2028. He will lose more money because he will lose super max with us like Dallas.
That’s as clear of a sign as there is on if he wanted to stay long term.
I think he will stay. No super star (unless you count Dwight) leaves LA

It took Dallas almost 6yrs to find the right pieces around Luka just to reach the Finals and get destroyed.
I don’t think Rob has 6yrs to waste here. With not enough assets after Lebron retires or leaves. It will be even harder for Rob. He will need to pull another LukaMagic type of trade or through free agency.
No marquee FA want to go to Dallas. LA and the weather , that’s more enticing as long as we have that cap space. We have to keep AR and that 31 FRP if we want someone like Kyrie post Lebron.
I'll add to this, a lot more marquee FA's are going to jump at the opportunity to play alongside a young Luka than alongside a 40YO LeBron with Clutch dictating the terms. The Lakers just gained a lot of Free Agent pull with this move, and with the clear signal sent by the way it went down.
We can't sign any star until after Lebron's contract is off the book so that's like 2 years of Luka prime wasted right there. 10 years just became 8. Lets see how many teams would let their still coveted FA walk and sign with the Lakers.
Kyrie would be about 35 if and when he signed here.
Only way you can fast track this. Trade Lebron which I don’t think will happen. Or hope Lebron leave after this season.
Then hope Rob can bring in another star who fits around Luka within 2 season or before his option year.
LeBron's option whether to come back next season, but it's the Lakers' option to tell him this is now Luka's team. If Lebron accepts playing off ball, setting picks, and letting Luca be primary ball handler in a 2 man game he could remain pretty effective and be a net positive for Luka and the Lakers. Particularly if we shed someone like Rui and change for Poetl or similar to shore up defense down low.
LBJ's huge salary is gone after next season, and Luka playing alongside LeBron for one and a half seasons in that scenario would not be wasted.
On the other hand, if LeBron can't or won't play effectively alongside Luka? He can start a conversation with Steph, Draymond, KD.
IMO this will be a slow process... I don't think Luka is just coming in here from the jump, and JJ will be like "here's the ball and do you"... JJ has a system in place which Lebron and AR had already adjusted to for half a season.
This will be similar to when Lebron joined the Heat... That first year it was still Wade's team, and they slowly ease Lebron in. Lebron was still able to play his game in other ways. While Wade was still leading the Heat. It was the following season when Wade finally handed the team over to Lebron. But the difference here is that 26yo Lebron, was an all nba team talent on both sides of the court.
If Bron stays that means the partnership has gone well. But if Lebron feels like they are phasing him out. I think he leaves this offseason.
Looking at superstars out there... Only guy really I see who can make it work with Luka... Is Giannis or Jokic maybe Wemby... But man that's like asking for another LukaMagic to happen.
Ugh what is Denver's cap situation in Luka's FA summer as of today? What about SA? Not worried about Milwaukee for many reasons.

Agree. Haters, please go away.
I enjoy almost all of the posts on this thread, even the ones against this trade, regardless of disagreeing with them, when they honestly state their thoughts. But a poster spamming extremely selective information and inaccurate portrayals of other posters' thought processes? Nah. Didn't engage, Obiwan.
So we're not a contender this year. Are we a contender next year with Lebron still on the team? Most likely no. That's two years of Luka prime gone right there. Just saying. It's not easy to build a championship team. It could take a few years or more and by that time we might have wasted a lot of Luka's prime years already. _________________ Lakers used to average one championship every four years under Dr. Buss but I'd gladly take one every ten years now.
To clarify the Windy comments, he said no guarantee Luka signs a year deal and may do a shorter term.
Most of already knew that he likely does a 2 year extension that kicks in after next season with a 3rd year option. That way he reaches the 10 year NBA service time mark and opens up a bigger salary for his next extension _________________ Previously CamReddish

I think it is pretty clear that Luka was not expecting this sudden change in his life and career and is still processing it.
While it is always possible he doesn't sign long term with the Lakers, I like our chances now that we have him in the building.
Say what you want about our current ownership, but they do treat players well overall in my opinion and I think players still want to play here.
Southern California and the lifestyle we have here is a draw also and always will be.
Even if Luka is a bit bummed at the moment, I think the Lakers will win him over with how they treat him but obviously he wants to win so we need to facilitate that in happening. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny

News alert, people.
Windhorst is all about clicks.
He has ZERO idea from his sources on what Luka expects to do a week, a month or a year from now.
He is merely guessing.
He’s often full of sh****
Stop, we can stop guessing about Luka’s extension until we get to that point. He preached loyalty today and you can tell he’s still hurt over what Dallas did to him.
Again, stop worrying about his extension and worry more about his health and getting back on the floor.

He’s a blow hard. He’s got a good gig but he never breaks anything other that wind after hours at a buffet table.

this season is already 60% over, and Luka spent that with the Mavs _________________ Never argue with a fool - listeners can't tell you apart

I've seen multiple reports on the trade that don't even include Max as part of the package, just AD and a first. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points."
Max is definitely a good get for the Mavs: 32 minutes in his debut: only gafford (33) and Ky (41) had more minutes...
Max: 15 points, 9 boards, 4/4 from deep... Happy for him. _________________ Starting Lakers Dynasty6.0! NOW!!

Wish we gave them Reaves instead of Max and gotten a decent big back instead of the corpses of Kleber and Morris.
Im not so sure......we have no idea of how Max will do in the playoffs whether the lights will be too bright for him or not. We know with AR, he is a championship caliber player with that kind of mentality.

Agree but Dallas clearly wanted Max. Nico mentioned defensive identity over and over... have to imagine Rob tried to pawn of Gabe or Vando. We could still offer Reaves/Rui for Turner/Neismith. Aaron can do a lot of what Max did.
