Oh, yeah. Charming movie. That one really showed the importance of a movie of that kind having a heart within it. The heart being the surrogate father-son friendship of Myagi and Danielsan played out over Zamfir's magical pan flute (ha). The scene where Myagi got drunk and explained to Danielsan how his wife and child died was pretty. Daniel solemnly bows behind his back as he's passed out with the Zamfir in the background, the moment where his respect and appreciation for Myagi has crystalized. Cobra Kai was in trouble.
John Hughes movies as well. You can't just reboot those and produce something that isn't a steaming pile. Even Footloose. The dated corniness and the actors (Lithgow and Bacon esp) are the very type of reasons that and other corny 80s teen movies have retained their likability. You strip those away, and what's the point? Part of the charm is the horrible looking actors, clothes, cars, etc. Cusak with a gigantic 70s beater, a trench coat, and a boombox playing In Your Eyes (a corny song in its own right). Put that together, you got a scene that even a lot of today's kids probably recognize. It's especially dumb to reboot that kinda stuff set in the 2000s. It does not translate. I'd bet more than half the kids that see the reboots of these probably like the originals like their parents did. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Rudy is the best sports movie of all time . Everyone loves that movie. Men, Women, children, and older people that aren't really even into sports. It's one of those movies that once you watch it once it'll have a lasting effect on you. Raging Bull would be 2nd and Rocky 3rd. |

Since no one has mentioned these...
"Days Of Thunder" (I mean, come on. Cole Trickle! Rowdy Burns! Russ Wheeler! Harry Hogge! I don't care how cheesy this movie is, I love it, and I am not even a NASCAR fan. Great cast, also.)
"Wildcats" (This and "Overboard" are my two favorite Goldie Hawn films, and I like a lot of her movies. The casting director also hit this out of the park, as unknown actors at the time that were part of the football team included Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, and Mykelti Williamson; it was the film debut of both Snipes and Harrelson. Nipsey Russell steals some scenes as Central High's principal, and Bruce McGill is convincing as the loathsome rival football coach.)
"The Greatest Game Ever Played" (Good golf flick, with Shia LaBeouf effectively playing the young amateur Francis Ouimet. Bill Paxton directed this film.)
"Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius" (Not as good of a story as the above golf-themed film, but I like Jim Caviezel, and this had a good supporting cast including Claire Forlani, Jeremy Northam, and Malcolm McDowell.)
"Over The Top" (Stallone arm wrestling. I love his winning move at the end lol. Guilty pleasure flick for me.)
"Caddyshack II" (Of course the original was better. Of course this movie is silly. I still enjoyed it. Maybe it's so bad, it's good! Plus, loyal Laker fan Dyan Cannon is in it. That has to count for something, right?)
"The Natural" (This should be an obvious one. Redford is as effective as any actor ever has been at pulling off a beautiful swing while portraying a baseball player. Modeled his swing after watching clips of Ted Williams.)
"Rounders" (If we're counting poker, this has to make the list. My friends and I often quote Teddy KGB, still. Love this movie.)
"Creed" (This was really well done by director Ryan Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan, and it produced the best acting work of Stallone's career. Yes, even better than the original Rocky movie.)
It takes a lot for me to not like a sports-themed movie, but just for the heck of it, I couldn't stand watching "The Babe" because John Goodman was so miscast in that role. His attempt to swing a baseball bat is the anti-Robert Redford in "The Natural." Oh, and even though this movie was mentioned among some people's favorites, "The Cutting Edge" pissed me off. How DB Sweeney loses his hockey career at the beginning, yeah, that would never happen. Ludicrous! |
