Stone Brewery's Arrogant Bastard

Put simply, it's kickass. I have an issue with Stone's advertising, that being they question your manhood if you don't like it. But it's my favorite beer among those that are available year round.[/quote]

The Label says it best:

This is an aggressive beer. You probably won't like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory --- maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it's made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer taste better. Perhaps you are mouthing your words as you read this.

One the opposite end of the spectrum . . . bad beers . . .

I like beer a bunch . . . I likes tons of beers. I'll even drink some beers that aren't all that good because they are BEER.

But damn there are some beers that just give brewing a bad name.

And I am not talking about the big corporate crap that churns out name brand generic beer for the masses.

I'm talking about micro-brews that pretend to be creating a quality product through refined, small scale artful brewing.

Way too many of them ty to find gimmicks to make a name for themselves and really just end up wasting everyone's time and money by thinking that cute names, neat looking labels and off beat flavorings make them a desirable beer.

Like I said, I enjoy beer and my friends and family know it. So when they come to my house for an event, they typically try to bring a tasty beer they think I will like or a new beer they don't think I have tried yet. Right now I am a member of three different "Beer of the Month" clubs because family members and friends thought they found the perfect Xmas gift for me.

Damn . . . way too much of the microbrew stuff is masturbatory crap.

The flavored and spiced trend has gone off the reservation. If I thought that vanilla flavored beer that had a clove flavor was tasty, I'd have been dumping vanilla extract and diced cloves into my stein years ago.

You know why I didn't? Because it tastes like crap. Cute names for breweries and overly designed labels don't change that.

Just through my beer of the month club trials recently, I have had 36 different brews from 12 different breweries . . . only two of them I actually liked enough to think about buying them. Only I can't remember what they were because I keep focusing on the things like the horrible "Vanailla IPA"'s and the "Orange peel and Corriander" Belgians.

Seriously . . . just make a quality brew and you won't need gimmicks. Breweries have been doing it for years that turn into decades and centuries.

Hoegarden

(who-gar-den)

Absolutely my favorite beer. For a long time I wasn't sure if I had a hands down favorite. Sometimes I thought I had it figured out, but about 4 years ago I had this, and it is without question the best tasting beer there is. In my opinion anyway.

Now if you want a fun beer to drink, the Samuel Adams variety pack is a good one. Lot's of good and very different flavors.

Of course, some people like to taste beer, and some people just like to get drunk. For the most part I am a taster kind of guy. But there is always 4th of July.

I think Hoegaarden is pronounced (hue-gar-den)

I agree it is a great beer, better on tap. You might like Blue Moon too if you like that.

Little by little, I'm beginning to drink beer to one, to two, to three at a time. The one I'm drinking recently is Busch since it's my friends' favorite brand due to it's inexpensive price in their "hood."

You guys need to be schooled on beers from The Bruery in Orange County. As part of their Reserve Society, they release very seasonal beers most can't find in stores. Porters, sours, stouts, reds....The Bruery makes all these ranging from 8% to a veryyyyyy rare beer called Black Tuesday topping off at a little over 19%

Rarity does not make a beer good. Nor is a beer better than another simply because it is stronger. There are some extremely good craft breweries out there for sure. But being a small craft brewery doesn't insure excellence.

Many of the IPA's or double IPA's (Imperial IPA's)

Sierra Nevada Torpedo is a good inexpensive (relative) IPA microbrew, as is their Hoptimum and of course their Pale Ale. Then there is Greenflash's Ipa and their Imperial; Stone's Ruination, 90 Minute by Dogfish, Pliney the Elder (soft i pronunciation) from Russian River, my local Rubicon Brewing's IPA and Hopsauce; and on and on.

That's become my "everyday" beer. It's very good, stronger than the Pale Ale and my local Vons routinely has 12 packs on sale for $12.

I have to hand it to PBR. They took a beer that tastes like what i imagine a warm Budweiser pissed in by a Coors drinker would, and sold it to hipsters as totally cool.

Yeah, I think you're right. My youngest (18, Freshman) says the popular beer is PBR. Huh?

I have been amazed this beer did not go the route of the Edsel or Rambler.

We have what is called the Roseville Auction way up younder, north of Sacramento. I haven't been there for awhile, but they were the only place I knew that was serving this stuff--at least back in the 90's.

This was not a hipster hangout to say the least.

Judging from your avatar, I'm sure I enjoy Stone just as much as you. It's still one of my favorite breweries to go to when I'm heading to San Diego. But I'm not trying to market The Bruery as being a great beer because of it's rarity. What makes that particular brewery stand out is it's rarity because it IS a damned good beer.

And I'm not a bartender there. I wish I could but I'd probably have irreperable damage to my liver if I was.
